February 1, 2015 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time Parish Bulletin Issue 4 Volume XLVII ST. ALOYSIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH 2025 Stuart Avenue Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70808-3979 (225) 343-6657 Fax (225) 344-6847 Website: www.aloysius.org STEWARDSHIP OF OFFERING PROMOTION WEEKEND JANUARY 31 & FEBRUARY 1 Faith! – a Gift to be Shared Through Stewardship This weekend we will have a special presentation from parishioners about Stewardship of Offering during all Masses (note that we will not have a 5:30 p.m. Mass on Sunday because of the Super Bowl). Our Stewardship of Offering Committee asks you to prayerfully reflect on your life of stewardship, especially in the area of offering. Commitment weekend will take place on February 7 and 8, 2015. Commitment cards may be placed in the offertory baskets during Mass, or may be mailed to the Parish office. You may also use the commitment cards and bank auto draft forms on the St. Aloysius Parish website as follows: http://church.aloysius.org/assets/uploads/docs/2015-stewardship-of-offering-card.pdf http://church.aloysius.org/assets/uploads/docs/2015-bank-draft-authorization.pdf NO 5:30 MASS THIS SUNDAY Vision Statement St. Aloysius Parish is a vibrant community of peace, love and unity as the living body of Christ. February 1, 2015 Mission Statement St. Aloysius Parish embraces and nurtures all, inspiring each to act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly in the love of God. 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time PARISH STAFF From Fr. Burns Dear Parishioners: I attended Leadership Night this past Tuesday evening. It was impressive to see how efficient and stimulating all of the committees function. This was a fulfilling experience and an affirmation of the investment that St. Aloysius made some six years ago when we brought in Fr. Tom Sweetser, S.J. to prepare the Parish Assessment and Renewal Report. This process helped make real a collaborative leadership style among its leaders which include: the Pastor, his Associate, Pastoral Staff, the School Staff, the Pastoral Council, the Finance Committee, the Facilities Development Committee and many volunteers. Congratulations, to all who have participated in this process, especially Fr. Than Vu who has sustained its development. The parish Master Planning Committee was also present to explain the construction project that will begin when a the new Child Care construction project will begin in May. After this project, it will be followed by the construction of a new Parish Administration Building. The ongoing development of the campus was encouraged and expanded with the most capable leadership of Fr. Than. I am sure you will hear more about this in the near future. It is important that the parish continue to improve the campus buildings, as the signs of its vitality don’t seem to be slowing down. St. Aloysius continues to baptize a large number of infants, as was seen a couple of weekends ago when nine boys and one girl was baptized. Furthermore, Saturday morning, January 24, 144 children will be making their First Reconciliation. I am grateful to Tricia Greely and all her helpers who have planned the event, even managing to recruit 10 priests to be present to help us on this important day. It is wonderful to see the generosity of all who help, including the 10 priest, some of them retired. Finally, I can’t express enough thanks to all the individuals who have offered their help in making Liturgical preparations for the funerals that have taken place since Ken Thevenet’s absence and all those who have help to make our weekend worship services function smoothly. Our hearts and prayers continue for both Ken Thevenet and Fr. Than Vu. May God bless each of them. We all know how much St. Aloysius Parish has been blessed by their ministries. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28 " February 1, 2015 2 Parish Office: 343-6657 Fr. On that same day, the mother would be ritually purified. Saint Mary and Saint Joseph were obedient to this law, even though, since Saint Mary remained a virgin after the birth of Christ, she would not have had to go through ritual purification. In his gospel, Luke recounts the story (Luke 2:22-39). The Presentation of the Lord concludes the celebration of the Nativity and with the offerings of the Virgin Mother and the prophecy of Simeon, the events now point toward Easter. The feast was first observed in the Eastern Church as "The Encounter." In the sixth century, it began to be observed in the West: in Rome with a more penitential character and in Gaul (France) with solemn blessings and processions of candles. The feast is another 'epiphany' celebration insofar as the Christ Child is revealed as the Messiah through the canticle and words of Simeon and the testimony of Anna the prophetess. Christ is the light of the nations, hence the blessing and procession of candles on this day. Inspired by the words of the canticle ("a light to the revelation of the Gentiles"), by the 11th century, the custom had developed in the West of blessing candles on the Feast of the Presentation. The candles were then lit, and a procession took place through the darkened church while the Canticle of Simeon was sung. Because of this, the feast also became known as Candlemas. While the procession and blessing of the candles is not often performed in the United States today, Candlemas is still an important feast in many European countries. We are looking for volunteers to help watch the little children of the participating mothers during the Momnipotent Mothers Prayer Group sessions. Children are dropped off next door in the Mimosa House for the hour and bring their own toys and snacks. The children's ages range from a few months to 3 years, and ideally we would like to have 2-3 volunteers each session.
