A Distressing Thought
One small reminder
Stress is a part of life. There's no escaping it. Everyone
experiences stress no matter who they are, where they are
or what they do. Stress can be a good thing at times, as
gives a person motivation to do things. But too much
stress often results in undesirable consequences. Teens
these days are under a lot of stress (and as a teen myself I
would know), and the focus of this article is to get you to
understand why that is so. The reasons are all varied, but
like all problems they have a common source- and for
teens it's often school.
Under pressure
By our 2015 Arundel School Intern
Aalia Hussein
For a second January,
we were delighted to
enjoy the company of
an Arundel School
pupil for a two week
internship, before
embarking on
her A Level studies.
Bright, friendly Aalia
Hussein soon proved
herself well suited to
our various lines of
business, and here,
shares some
interesting
observations on
teen stress.
The main reason students are under stress is because of
the pressure to do well in school. Often this pressure
comes from their parents or their teachers, who constantly
tell them that in order to have a good job and live a good
life, they need to achieve excellent grades to be able to gain admission into highranking universities. The idea that only the top universities can offer them adequate
services is a false perception. Generally, whichever university you go to offers more or
less the services.
But simply placing the blame on teachers and parents is not entirely accurate.
Universities don't just require students to have good grades, they have an increasing
list of demands from us. First and foremost, the obvious excellent grades are needed,
some might even require a transcript of all your test scores and your rank in your year
group. Next, extracurricular activities such as sports, clubs or hobbies. These are just
what is required officially. If you are applying to a university, you're most likely to get
accepted if you show a keen interest in something
other than the normal requirements. The most
popular of those is being actively involved in charity and/or environmental work.
The list of demands doesn't end there. After universities, the biggest problem are employers. Many
companies don't just require a degree from potential employees. They would also like the applicant
to have “work experience” in their desired field. Yet there's another huge problem with that. Most of
our time is spent occupied with school. Adding a job to that creates unnecessary pressure. Now I'm
sure you're thinking that we could simply work in the holidays, but we also need our time to rest
and relax as well, which is basically the point of having holidays.
It's an impossible feat, yet somehow we're coping with it. Struggling under piles of work and
expectations and constantly under stress, but coping. So, you ask, what? If they can cope it means that it isn't as bad as I'm making it
sound. Actually it is. And with new studies, it can even be potentially damaging to teens. Stress impacts cognitive functioning in our
brains (which basically means it affects our brain's ability to process thoughts), diminishes our concentration, memory, attention and
decision-making abilities. So yes, it is as bad as it sounds because it's now affecting our learning.
So little time, so much to do
So now to get the good grades and such, a student must be assigned homework based on what they have learned that day in order
for the new information to stay
fresh in their minds. So naturally,
they get homework and
assignments from most if not all
lessons. Which doesn't seem like
much of a problem. At my
the
school, teachers are required to
give us at least half an hour's
worth of homework. Some give

Paddington
By Jacqueline Collins
I was very glad, that after a very hectic first week at school, I finally managed to
hook up with my friend who was taking her nieces and nephew to the film
Paddington. Now that my own children are all grown up, I no longer really have an
excuse to see a children's film and it would feel a bit sad going to a children's film
without any children in tow. After all the violence emerging in Paris recently,
Paddington is the perfect escape film and I so enjoyed sitting in the dark womb of
the cinema just forgetting about all the problems in the world for a short while. I felt
a bit like a child myself with my box of popcorn and tube of Smarties. It was
wonderful to see a film spreading a positive and wholesome message to young
children and adults alike. Clearly this charming and delightful film is also made
with adults in mind as well and so there was lots of humour and innuendo that just
floats over the heads of the children. The very familiar Hugh Bonneville, so wellknown from Downton Abbey, was hilarious as a nervous rather anxious parent.
However, before his children were born, he was quite a rebel and there is a
hilarious moment when he is driving his pregnant wife to hospital on a huge
motorbike to the music of 'Born to be Wild.' I loved the performance by Sally
Hawkins as his quirky artistic wife, Mrs Brown. She rather reminded me of myself as
being an embarrassing, over affectionate and enthusiastic mum of teenagers.
Madeleine Harris was completely spot on as a teenage girl who is just mortified by
the weird behaviour of her family. However, I was pleased to see that she is an
intelligent girl who studies Chinese and business in her spare time. Usually I am
not keen on Nicole Kidman, but she was perfect for the role of Millicent, the
daughter of the Explorer who originally discovered the talking bears. There were
quite a few dark undertones, which showed that she and the neighbour were similar
to the Nazi Fascists although eventually when the Neighbour realises that she
actually wants to stuff poor Paddington Bear, even he suddenly discovers he does
have a conscience, after being fairly right wing and racist in the beginning. There
were lots of references to the Second World War with Paddington Bear being similar
to some of the children being evacuated and also the refugee children who arrived
with a suitcase and a tag around their necks. The antique Shop owner, Mr Gruber
was also a refugee from Hitler's Germany which keeps very true to the original story
published in 1958. The film was produced by David Heyman, who also produced
Harry Potter, so there were lots of truly magical moments, such as Mr Gruber's train
set which delivers tea and cake and also the chaos that ensues when Paddington
first discovers the bathroom. Of course the real magic of the film hits you when you
walk away from it and you realise that for the last few hours you have believed that
the bear was actually real. Apparently it took eight years to create this endearing
bear, as it is completely computer generated using animatronics. The voice of
Paddington was originally going to be by Colin Firth but it was felt that his voice did
not quite match the bear’s and that a younger voice was required. Actor Ben
Whishaw replaced him and his whimsical “Hot tea and Honey voice” as reviewer
Robbie Collin from the Telegraph
describes it, fits in perfectly.
Much of this feel good film is set
in multicultural Notting Hill, and
Paddington often feels comforted
when he sees the Cuban Band
playing on the streets and one of
their songs show the idealistic
message of the film, “In London,
nobody's alike which means
everyone fits in.”

The Tulip Tree
Pork and Leek Casserole
This week's recipes are inspired by the abundance of lovely fat leeks in the
shops. Pork and Leek Casserole is a very old recipe of mine. I discovered it
when the twins were babies and I had to make the dinner in the afternoon
while they were asleep as it was practically impossible to cook in the evening.
This dish was ideal as it would just cook slowly away and then could be heated
up when it was dinner time. I used to cook it in the oven, but these days with
the constant electricity cuts I tend to cook it in my big frying pan. This recipe
can easily be made to go round further if extra teenage boys turn up
unexpectedly, just add an extra tin of tomatoes and extra vegetables. It goes
beautifully with rice, spaghetti or mashed potatoes. This is not a strictly low
carb recipe as it does contain one ounce of flour, but a flour substitute could be
used to coat the pork and it could then be served with puréed cauliflower.
The other recipe for Fennel and Leeks is a vegetable side dish that goes with
many plain meat dishes and is ideal for those on the low carb diet. Leeks pair
up perfectly with fennel which is also available at the moment, and the sprinkle
of lemon zest really brings out flavour. Leeks are a bit tricky to clean, and I
usually just cut them into slices and then
half the slices and then wash them,
S erve s
drying them in a colander.

This beautiful
ornamental
tree was
originally
discovered in
1787 on the
Gold Coast of
Africa and then
planted
throughout the
tropics in streets
and parks for
shade.
Its Latin name
is Spathodea
campanulata
but it is
commonly
known as the
African Tulip
Tree, the Flame
Tree and the Fountain Tree. The cup shaped flowers hold
in rain and dew which attract many birds such as Barbets.
Children also love to play with the flower buds which are
like water pistols that can squirt water. It is also used for
soil improvement, erosion control and land rehabilitation.
Amazingly, the bark, leaves and flowers of this tree are
used to treat many illnesses such as malaria, oedema,
dysentery and liver complaints.

If you have electricity you can turn on the oven to 180 degrees. You can cook
this in the oven, but if the electricity runs out half way you can easily transfer it
to a big frying pan and cook on top of the stove.
Remove stalk and seeds from the pepper and chop it.
Melt one tablespoon of butter and add one tablespoon of oil and fry the
onion, leek, pepper, courgettes and mushrooms for three minutes.
Transfer to casserole pot if cooking in the oven. Otherwise remove and keep
in a covered bowl.
Add the curry powder, paprika, salt and pepper to the flour. Toss the pork
cubes in this mixture.
Add the rest of the oil and butter and fry the coated pork for 5 minutes, scraping up the flour so that it does not stick to the bottom. Add to the
casserole if using with the vegetables, tomatoes and herbs. If just using the frying pan,
return vegetables to the pan and add tomatoes and herbs.
Cover the pan or casserole pot and cook for 1 and a half hours.

A Distressing Thought
- from page 2
Now we also need another two hours or so to compensate for our
other needs such as eating, bathing, socialising ( which is actually
incredibly important for emotional, mental and physical health, as
well as the development of skills vital to our future careers and
having healthy relationships with our friends and families.)
We also need maybe more than that, as most teens have religious
obligations to fulfil as well as doing their hobbies and chores
(which are required by almost all parents, and is also needed for
development as it is important later in life), which gives us another two hours. We also need to add
in the fact that we need to have some family time and relaxation as spending time with our families
is an important aspect in our lives, and as we are too human beings, allowing ourselves time to
relax is vital, so maybe another two hours. So that now sums up to 22 hours now. Don't forget we
need to have at least 8 or more hours of sleep, necessary for our still developing brains. The grand
total comes to 30 hours. Which begs a rather baffling question. How exactly are teens supposed to
fit 30 hours in a 24 hour day?
So you can clearly see why we teens are stressed

Animal Welfare and
Wildlife Conservation
AWARE (Animal and Wildlife Area Research and
Rehabilitation) Trust is run by vets and focuses on
animal welfare, wildlife conservation and research.
Campaigns in rural areas adjacent to wildlife areas
vaccinate, sterilise, de-tick, de-worm and improve
quality of life for domestic animals. This assists in
broader goals by contributing to improved farming,
better quality of life for rural people, resultant
decreased poaching, and preventing spread of
diseases from domestic to wild animals. AWARE
educates children and adults on animal care and
conservation, does research on health of wild and
domestic animals living adjacently, rehabilitates and
releases injured wild animals and dehorns rhino. To
assist, sponsor, donate: [email protected].

Harare SPCA works to eliminate cruelty to animals
in Harare. It comprises, an inspectorate, veterinary
hospital and re-homing centre. The inspectorate
investigates and prosecutes all cases of cruelty
reported to it, visits homes of potential adopters
before any animal leaves the re-homing centre and
does spot checks after adoption. Surgery provides
medical care, vaccinations and sterilisation to
animals in SPCA care and animals of
underprivileged owners. Large percentage of
veterinary treatments are pro bono or subsidised.
SPCA never turns away any animal in need. Mobile
veterinary unit goes out five days a week to high
density areas to treat, vaccinate and dip animals
whose owners are unable to bring them to hospital.
In 2014 so far over 4 800 animals have been
treated at SPCA hospital and an equal number seen
by the mobile unit. Re-homing centre houses 200
animals all looking for homes. Due to increasing
numbers of abused, abandoned, unwanted and
surrendered animals, and pro bono and subsidised
veterinary treatment provided, SPCA is not covering
costs. SPCA is the official municipal pound, but
receives no official grants or assistance, surviving on
donations, money from adoption fees & veterinary
treatment paid for.

The answer to that would be sacrifice, namely sacrificing our
sleep. Which is the worst possible thing we can do. According to
the National Sleep Foundation, teens actually need 9¼ hours of
sleep because our bodies and brains are still growing and
changing rapidly. Teens also tend to fall asleep later, not only
because we like to, but because of a shift in our internal body
clock due to the hormonal imbalance that comes with puberty.
Thus we fall asleep two hours later than normal (23:00 as
opposed to 21:00), so naturally we'd have to wake up later to
make sure we get enough sleep. Yet we can't because of school
starting relatively early in the morning.

Now sacrificing our sleep is without a doubt going to have
undesired consequences, mainly having trouble concentrating in
class; a shortened memory span which ultimately leads to poor
academic performance. And poor academic performance is
going to result in even more stress because
now teens are worried about pulling their
grades up, and so will spend longer hours at
night in a desperate attempt to do so, which
means the whole vicious cycle is repeated. In
extreme cases, sleep deprivation results in
depression, aggressiveness and moodiness
and may even cause illnesses.

Is it only school that stresses us out?
It is important to remember that while school is the main factor in
causing stress amongst teens, there are other factors involved. Some teens may be facing familial problems at
home, ranging from abuse to expectations to divorces. Some teens are seeing their families in financial trouble
and so are trying to juggle school with work in order to help out. Others may be facing peer pressure, and the
most common pressures come from drinking alcohol or doing drugs.
Most, if not all, teens constantly worry about what their peers think of them and so naturally worry themselves
to make sure that they look their best (even though nearly all schools in Zimbabwe have a uniform so everyone
looks the same).

Stress could also come from bullying,
which proves damaging to a person's
self-esteem, particularly a teenager as
our self-esteem is worryingly fragile.
Lack of self-esteem may result in poor
academic performance which
invariably leads to heightened stress
levels. Some teens may be in a
relationship and are worried about
their romantic life, so now face added
pressure to keep their partners happy.
Don't stress it
As mentioned earlier, stress can cause
significant damage. So it is imperative
that it is dealt with properly to prevent
such damage. Here are a few tips:
As crazy as it sounds, the best thing to
do when you're stressed is to relax or
to just take a break from work. There
are many ways in which you could do
this, examples include taking a bath,
reading, yoga and meditation
especially help or even listening to
music. The next best thing would be to
talk to someone about your stress and
why you're feeling stress. It really
makes a difference when you get it off
your chest, and whomever you talk to
might be able to help you in some
way.Exercising is actually a great way
of managing your stress, and as an
added bonus keeps your body
healthy. When you're stressed, it
causes your body to release some
unwanted chemicals that leave you
edgy and tense and leave your
muscles tense. Exercising gets rid of
all those chemicals and loosens your
muscles. Be careful to choose
something you actually enjoy doing,
you don't want to look at it as another
thing to cross off on your to-do list!
Ÿ Get a massage. It will release the
tension from your body and will
leave you feeling relaxed.
Ÿ You could also practice breathing
techniques when you're
overwhelmed. Taking deep breaths
and slowly releasing them may help you calm down.
Ÿ Set yourself goals and break larger tasks into smaller,
manageable ones.
Ÿ Eat regularly. And eat proper food! Your body needs
its vitamins and minerals more than ever under
stressful condition.
Ÿ Get a good night's sleep! Sleep is basically food for the brain, and your
body needs to recuperate so what better way to do that than to sleep.
Ÿ You should also try to keep a positive attitude towards things. Under
stressful situations, often teens think that they won't be able to handle all
the tasks assigned to them. That's negative thinking and should be
avoided. If you think optimistically, you'll find that the tasks will be much
easier to perform.
