In this Issue, read Linda’s account of their epic journey, which so far raised over $20 000 for anti-poaching efforts by various organisations operating in Zimbabwe...... Story starts page 2. Zimboundary By Linda Davidson Pics supplied by Zimboundary We're awake before first light. Last night's romantic notion of sleeping under the clear July sky now seems like a bad idea as it is bitterly cold and we're shivering inside our sleeping bags. The stars have wheeled right round, I notice – a visual confirmation of the 4am alarm clock call. But the fire is already lit and the kettle on the flames for morning tea. Bliss. But the fire is already lit and the kettle on the flames for morning tea. Bliss. Despite being exhausted, sore and cold, the day ahead fills us with a sense of excitement. We'll be on our bikes for 10 or 11 hours, just like yesterday and the day before, but along with the hardship comes the incredible scenery, new people and possibilities, perhaps a tail wind and maybe a few downhill stretches. Who knows, we may even get into camp before dark tonight and that would be wonderful… This is Zimboundary. The crazy attempt of two people to cycle around the entire border of our country. We expect to be out here for seven weeks and to cover around 3,600km, but at this point we are only eleven days in with 33 days and over 2,500km to go, and we're starting to wonder “What are we doing here...?” Good question! The Zimboundary Cycle Challenge was, above all, a statement. We wanted to raise public awareness about the threat to our country's greatest treasure and we needed a big 'vehicle' to do this. The treasure was not gold or diamonds, but rather our heritage and greatest renewable resource, our wildlife. To raise awareness and funds for the anti-poaching units of our country we decided to take on a challenge that has been attempted but never completed before, the circumnavigation of Zimbabwe's borders. Our ride began on 6th July 2014 and at times it did seem it would be impossible to complete, but now, two months after our epic 3,763km tour, we find that rather than being over, the journey is only just beginning… In the last few weeks I have been asked to write many stories about Zimboundary, stories about the daily struggle of riding over 100km per day, the difficulties, not only of aching bodies and being too tired to eat, but of the heartache of being away from home and my three children. How I longed to share the experiences along the way with them, and explain why it would all be worth it. Every story I write helps me to understand it a little better, to learn more about myself and the incredibly worthy cause we are fighting for. Today's story, however, is a little different. It is time, I feel, to write about more than the cyclists or the challenges of a 3,800km bicycle ride, because as tough as this was, it is now over - while the threat to our wildlife is ongoing and progressive. We have learnt that in the last 40 years Zimbabwe has lost 53% of her wildlife, a shocking statistic. In the 1960s, there was an upswing in conservation efforts in Zimbabwe. Men with incredible vision like the first rangers of the then Game Department in 1955, such as Archie Fraser, Rupert Fothergill and Ian Nyschens, realised that it was becoming a priority to try to repair the damage caused by reckless hunters such as Courtney Selous. "One of the greatest threats to wildlife is the belief that someone else will save it." Jane Goodall The bicycle ride around our borders opened our eyes to a new kind of wildlife warrior, the scouts of Zimbabwe's anti-poaching units. These men face hardship and danger on every patrol they undertake. They work tirelessly at the front line against the poachers of our wildlife. They sleep under the stars without the luxury of layers of clothing of Arctic-rated sleeping bags. They do not have a back-up vehicle but carry all their kit in broken back packs, weapons at the ready. They, too, miss their homes and families. A TLAS EARTH MOVERS and PLANT HIRE Look no further! Jacqueline Collins On the evening of Halloween, I managed to escape my wall to wall examination marking and flitted out to a most delightful musical soiree. It was perfectly timed to start at five thirty so it forced us to admire the most sublime sunset on the way there. There were just very subtle hints that it was Halloween's, some of the musicians wore delicate transparent witches' hats, one person wore a glittering wizard's cloak and there was a skeleton hanging up by the swimming pool. Glittering fairy lights around the mahogany trees made a magnificent stage and we were treated to a wonderful medley of songs. I never fail to appreciate the talent that we have in Harare, and I always think that it is so exciting when young talented people come back from their travels to share their experience with the entertainment community here. I had never seen the gifted singer, Caz Sole before, and she was just brilliant. Her songs in French were mesmerising with a very convincing accent and she could also A Purple Day to celebrate the Jacarandas. sing American songs from the Deep South equally beautifully, enunciating every word. It was also a treat to see the vibrant young music teacher from Chisipite Junior, Chiedza Chitepo, playing her violin to accompany our lovely Annette Eastwood on the Piano and veteran musician John Kelly. It all felt gloriously old fashioned to listen to charming music, enjoying a glass of wine and catching up with old friends. Normally in this column I feature just one tree in the Flowering Tree Appreciation Corner but I just could not decide on one tree since there are so many to choose from at the moment. So this column is mainly a celebration of the amazing variety of flowering trees we have in Harare. Of course, the Jacaranda is the queen of our trees in Harare, spreading her royal purple robes across the city. For teachers of course the Jacaranda is synonymous with the examinations, and dire warnings are issued to students to start their studying before the Jacaranda blooms! The bluebells always look slightly surreal, and give a magical touch to our city each October. Caption The Blue Bells of Harare Sometimes, when I am driving my daughter to or from Ballet, I love to look out for a Jacaranda Queen, a lady dressed beautifully all in purple. I have to resist the temptation to whip out of the car to ask if I could take a photograph sometimes, in case people might think I was totally mad. In fact, as the examinations came to an end, we teachers decided to have a purple day in celebration of the Jacarandas. We enjoy doing this from time to time; we all decide beforehand to wear a certain colour, and we have great fun seeing if the pupils actually notice or not. Then there is the frangipani which I think has the best fragrance of all the flowering trees, I just love to breathe it in, and it reminds me of beaches and Caribbean suntan lotion. I remember when I first came here and saw the ugly, stubby branches of the frangipani tree I just wanted to rip them out immediately. However, luckily I was advised against it and found that the flowers seemed to last for about nine months of the year. Painting - Interior and Exterior. Then I also had to include the rain tree as on one of our school functions it was Ceilings, Gutters, Fascia Boards, Cornices etc. Tiling - Floors, Walls. blisteringly hot and it was such a delight to shelter in its cooling shade. I never quite like the idea of raw eggs in most chocolate mousse recipes, so this is ideal as it does not use eggs. It is also rather a healthy option for children, although perhaps it would be a good idea not to mention that it has avocado in the ingredients. This is also a great recipe if you have an avocado tree and have a glut of avocados. It is also perfect for vegans or those on gluten free diets. Flowering Tree Appreciation Corner The fragrant flowers of the frangipani Ingredients 2 ripe avocados v ¼ cup and 1 v ¼ cup of milk (soya or almond v milk could also be used for tablespoon of blanched those on a vegan diet) almonds ½ cup of sweetener of choice v ? cup and 1 tablespoon or sugar v of cocoa powder ½ cup of sweetener of choice v or sugar Method Whizz up almonds in food processor until they are a very fine v powder and almost like a paste. The stubby branches of the Frangipani Cut the avocados in half and remove the seed. Scoop out the v green flesh with a spoon and add to the almond mixture. Mix on medium speed until smooth. v Add the cocoa powder and sugar and mix until incorporated. v Gradually add the milk until desired consistency is reached. v Taste to check that there is enough sugar, if not just add a tiny v bit more. Serve in individual serving dishes and top with whipped cream v or ice cream. Edible flowers such as borage can also make the mousse look very pretty. I have noticed that some enterprising Flowers of the Rain Tree Marvellous Music Teacher Di Wright person is selling borage, tiny pansies and nasturtium flowers in Food Lovers Market. Another nice way to serve this is to layer it up, with cream and ground almonds! My daughter decorated the one in the photo but I would never normally have the patience to serve it like this!! 4 The Majestic Jacaranda spreading her robes across Harare ZIMTRADER CLASSIFIED SMALLS ARTS and CRAFTS CLEANING SERVICES THE SCRAP STOP KeepItClean Scrapbooking Lessons & Supplies. Surgery provides medical care, vaccinations and sterilisation to animals in SPCA care and animals of underprivileged owners. Large percentage of veterinary treatments are pro bono or subsidised. SPCA never turns away any animal in need. Mobile veterinary unit goes out five days a week to high density areas to treat, vaccinate and dip animals whose owners are unable to bring them to hospital. The thrill of experiencing the ROK Finals in Italy Kevin Dufty In this issue, enjoy this report back on Zac Dufty’s trip to Italy with his Dad and mechanic, Kevin: They arrived home on 28 October after a hectic and exciting 14 day trip to the ROK World Finals in Italy. Zac improved so much compared with last year and drove really well, often within half a second or so of the fastest South African boy. With 105 entries in his class, the competition was fierce and the track and driving is completely the opposite of what we experience at home. It is hard to explain to anyone from Zim how much grip there is, how hard the racing is and how important set-up is. Of course it was disappointing that Zac did not make the pre-finals, as he posted some very decent times, but we both showed some of our inexperience at such a high level: myself with set-up, and Zac with qualifying and traffic. Having said that, we just cannot be disappointed with the experience we had how awesome for a 10 year old from Zimbabwe to go to Italy to represent his country at a Karting World Final! We loved every minute. Zac renewed and made so many new friends and he absolutely loves being part of the Roos Karting Team "gang". Thanks Etienne and Bjorn Roos for all your help and patience and the whole Roos Kart Racing team in South Africa - you guys are amazing and we are very fortunate to be part of such a great group of people. Finally, a massive thank you to sponsors: Motortorque, Fawcett Security, Alliance Insurance, Graphtec, The Coldchain and Harare Karting Club, without whom we would not have been able to participate - THANK YOU so much for your support, it is very much appreciated!! Zimboundary - Epic Cycle Ride to support anti poaching efforts from page 2 This is a tribute to these fine men, a thank you for their commitment and perseverance in the anti-poaching war. Last week the Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit (VFAPU) held their annual fund raising event. Zimboundary has funded this unit with drums of diesel and tyres as well as cash donations and dry goods for distribution among the scouts and I was invited to their function as a 'thank you'. The event was held on The Zambezi Explorer, a triple deck luxury boat with a carrying capacity of 150 people. As people arrived to enjoy this wonderful evening, the VFAPU scouts lined the deck to welcome guests. I then took the opportunity to talk with some of them.Deeply grateful and polite, their excitement about the Zimboundary donation was contagious. While I had been frustrated at not being able to contribute more, these men soon set me straight. Four of them were going on deployment that evening, as soon as the boat cast off for her sunset cruise. They would sleep in the Park that night, stationed just 20km inside the boundary. They could sleep well and wake rested to march to a rendezvous the next morning where another four of their unit would meet them. Their gratitude, which completely humbled me, was because our fuel donation meant that they could be driven to the 20km deployment point, while the second four could enjoy a night at home with family before being driven to the 50km rendezvous. The business of anti-poaching is not limited to the men who stand on the front line or the men and women who run these units; it is not only about the people who cycle around the country or hold marathons and sponsored walks. The business of saving wildlife is instead about the message given by every single person who ever spent a dollar on it. I said goodbye to everyone and took my place on the boat, very proud to be a Zimbabwean. My message to you is the same. We can do this. Just like Zimboundary was pedalled one kilometre at a time, so we can do this, one dollar at a time. Come everyone, come and join me...
