Fun and Festivity
at Zimbabwe Colour Run 2014
Story Rosie Mitchell
Photos Tinashe Chapepuka
Over 8000 people turned out for this year's Colour Run at the race
course on 6 December, proving the power of both an excellent
publicity campaign, and word of mouth! This was the second
edition and the over 5 000 participants who went to last year's first
local Colour Run, talked about it ecstatically for months afterwards!
So it was no surprise that this year's crowd was far bigger. To attract
a crowd of that size to an event in Harare with an entry fee which is
not cheap, is an amazing achievement. Early Bird discounts
ensured healthy advance ticket sales, and there were plenty who
turned up on the day too. The Zimbabwe Colour Run, like the
global Colour Run brand, is a commercial venture, and must have
felt like a rather risky gamble last year. But the far-reaching global
hype about the Colour Run concept which has taken the world by
storm, plus great publicity, really paid off! With business confidence in the venture based on the
solid foundation of the inaugural event's great success, and the superb spreading of the word
via multiple means, the organisers must be delighted by the phenomenal response this year.
Our whole Zimtrader team again participated, plus the children, taking advantage of the early
booking discount - $15 per adult for tickets bought before 25 November, as opposed to $20
afterwards, and $25 on the gate (kids cost $5 regardless of when purchased). Once again we
had a wonderful time and lots of fun. This is a concept that really engages the child in all of us,
regardless of our age! Inhibitions disappear and everyone, from tots to grannies and
grandpas, gets fully involved in the fun of it all. The atmosphere at the start was about as
festive as life can get; the carnival spirit was pervasive, the excitement and joy of the whole
experience palpable. Participants were covered in colours from the sachets of harmless brightly
coloured corn starch, long before the event actually began! That
many people across all age groups, all gathered in one place,
purely to have fun, creates a tremendously festive, friendly
ambience and has to be experienced to gain a true understanding
of how wonderful it is. White Colour Run branded T shirts were
part of the package which came with the entrance fee, and pretty
much everyone wore these, the better to show off the multi-colours
with which they were to be showered!
As last year, the vast majority of people strolled, walked and
ambled the 4+km course rather than ran it, enjoying the social
element, being covered in colour along the way at each sponsor's
stand, and soaking it all up. I ran it (of course!) though not twice,
as I did last year, as I had the Europcar 20 Miler lined up for 6am
the next day and needed to conserve some energy! It was all very
festive and fun and after the event itself, there were lots of
exhibition stands to visit, places to buy food and drink, varied live
music, a friendly, vibrant atmosphere, parachutists soaring down
onto the field, and lots of activity and sociability generally.
Though a commercial venture, with additional support from
multiple sponsors who gain good advertising mileage through their
presence and participation, the Zimbabwe Colour Run, like most
such events worldwide, also donates some of its proceeds to
selected charities.
The Emerald Hill School for the Deaf was again a beneficiary, and
this year's new beneficiary was an organisation close to our hearts
here at Zimtrader – the Animal and Wildlife Area Research and
Rehabilitation (AWARE) Trust. Set up and run by vets, AWARE Trust
is a non-profit organisation which conducts a range of
environmental projects aimed at conserving wildlife and its
habitats, including sterilisation and vaccination campaigns for
domestic animals living in rural areas bordering wildlife areas.
These concurrently benefit the animals, their owners and
adjacent wildlife, preventing the spread of dangerous diseases
between these areas. AWARE is also constantly fundraising for
the significant costs of rhino de-horning as an anti-poaching
strategy, and works in partnership with National Parks to carry
out de-horning campaigns. AWARE had a stand at the Colour
Run which attracted lots of interest, and next door, was the
National Parks stand, also busy.
Thousands of people stayed on for hours after their walk or run
to enjoy the stands, atmosphere, socialising and entertainment.
While those with small children, or without the stamina for
partying on well into the night, left towards dusk, the younger
set stayed on to enjoy the festive after-party with international
DJs, which went on till the small hours of the morning. All told,
another great success, well organised, very well publicised and
well enjoyed! CONT page 5....

Chris The Hairdresser
By Jacqueline Collins
This column is mostly a celebration that Chris the Hairdresser has renovated his salon recently.
Admittedly, as a long standing customer of Chris's Hair Salon for the last fifteen years, it could be said
that these renovations were a tad overdue. The chairs for washing hair, were very uncomfortable, not
that I would have mentioned that to Chris. I would not want to whinge unnecessarily and spoil the
positive upbeat atmosphere of the Salon. Also, in these difficult economic times one understands that
it is a major feat to keep a business running at all, and certainly Chris is always training young
apprentices and keeping up with all the latest trends, so one would not want to be petty. In fact, that
chair was actually a luxury compared to how he started his business 17 years ago, when customers
had to have their hair washed in a bucket. However, that was not the important thing, people came
to have an excellent haircut and also to enjoy the gossip just as they do today. In fact when I am at
Chris's I am just glad that I did not live in Ancient Egyptian times, where eavesdropping was
considered a sin, which would lead to being gobbled up by Ammit the Devourer. There is always
something interesting being discussed which you cannot help but listen in to as you are having your
hair done. Chris is always up to date on the latest happenings in Harare which creates alively sizzling
vibe that makes a visit to the hairdressers such a treat. So now, on top of the gossip, we can also
enjoy sinking down in the new padded chairs in total comfort.
Faithful Retro Barber's chair,
Chris started from humble beginnings, with his iconic retro red chair which still takes pride of place in still in use after 17 years
his salon today. He had a bathroom mirror and his hairdressing tools were just kept on the floor. Both
he and his pregnant wife, Louise helped out with painting the salon. He remembers that it was
difficult at the time as people were all in tears since Princess Diana had just died. I remember that
time very clearly since I was giving birth to my twins that day. In fact my dear husband was busy
listening to the football results in the labour room, and so he told me the news. Mind you, at that
stage I had completely forgotten who Princess Diana actually was. I remember breastfeeding the
twins and watching the many programmes of Princess Diana that were on at the time. Although most
of us at the time were not Royalists, somehow the death of Princess Diana touched us all, perhaps
because she was the most human of the Royal family. We had kind of grown up with her, and all her
strengths and weaknesses were well known.
I am very grateful that I have a local hairdressers that is just around the corner, within walking
distance. My husband is the only one in the family who does not use the hairdressers, since he just
shaves all his hair off so that he is more aerodynamic on his bike. However, over the years, with 4
children, I have always popped in and out of the salon on a fairly regular basis, often in a mad panic
just before the start of term. I love the cosy familiarity and also the fact that my hairdresser Dawn is
actually one of my ex pupils. She like many young people, left to travel the world but returned to
Zimbabwe, bringing her skills with her to settle down and start a family. In fact, Chris also left
Zimbabwe for three years to set up a skydiving business in Mauritius, just after the really grim times of
hyperinflation. It was so sad at that time to see everybody deserting the sinking ship, but what kept
me going was the firm conviction that people would come back to Zimbabwe. The Salon still existed Cool Christmas tree made with discarded dye tubes
but it was not quite the same without Chris there. In fact, when Chris did return at first I hardly
recognised him, since he had only just managed to survive the most terrible skydiving accident in
Mauritius. Luckily, he managed to recover fairly quickly and was soon back to his old self again.
Recently Chris has employed two new stylists, Gordon and Liz and both of them bring the wealth of
their experience from London and Cape Town back to Zimbabwe after many years away. There is also
continuity in the fact that Chris's lovely receptionist, Veronica has been with him for over17 years,
since she was with him in his previous salon. Although my daughter Natalia lives in England, she
always prefers to have her hair done here on her visits back to Zimbabwe, because she feels so
comfortable at Chris's. Chris is very friendly and approachable and he is the kind of person who just
has the knack of speaking to teenagers and young people. In fact,

Gorgeous Gifts at Nguni Ngwenya at the hub
According to a recent Guardian
article, the British government has
also started to have workshops to
encourage Hairdressers to spread
information about sustainability,
recycling and being conscious
about the environment. I have to
say that Chris could have lead this
workshop himself as his salon is a
brilliant example of this ethos, since
even his Christmas tree has been
made out of recycled dye tubes.
There is also another shop I love at

Oleander
‘The wilderness and the wasteland shall be glad for
them, And the Desert shall rejoice and blossom as the
rose, It shall blossom abundantly and rejoice,Even with
joy and singing’. Isaiah 35.1.
I first encountered the beautiful Oleander as a
backpacker in Greece and loved the musky rose smell
of the flowers. Recently, after Googling them, I was
quite fascinated to find out that the Oleander is also
known in the Bible as the “Desert Rose.” Apparently it
has medicinal qualities and the extract of Oleander
was used by Roman soldiers as a cure for hangovers.
As early as the 8th
Century it was used as a
cancer treatment by Arab
Physicians.
Oleanders seem to grow
very well in Zimbabwe
and it was interesting to
see that Mark
Swanepoel, a naturopath
from South Africa is
making a supplement
made from Oleander,
called Sutherlandia OPC,
which has been very effective in treating both HIV and
Cancer (Tony Isaacs, A brief History of the Oleander).

SPECIALIST SERVICES
We had three constructive criticisms as
feedback for the organisers for the
next edition; assuming this tradition is
now well entrenched! The most
serious, was the complete absence of
water points on the course. As a
regular runner, for me this is a simple
assumption and it did not occur to me
for one moment that I would need to
carry water. As this is an event which
begins at midday, at the height of
summer, in high humidity, and long
stretches without shade, this should be
a given. No one expects to enter an
organised, advertised,
running/walking event without water
being laid on along the route by the
organisers, whether they be
fundraisers, or, in this instance,
operating a commercial enterprise. It
was a particularly hot day, and I ran
the route quite fast, without water or
cash, assuming that normal running
event expectations would be met. They
were not. I was asked to pay for fizzy
drinks, where I saw them (infrequently)
en route, and there were no free water
sachet points to be found, desperately
as I looked! I become dehydrated in
that heat quite fast and by the end was
parched and heat exhausted. There
was no water or other drink being
handed out to finishers either, another
usual custom and hence expectation at
the end of an event. Next, we
discovered that the only way to buy a
drink, soft or hard, was to buy a $10
book of drinks tickets – and there were
big queues trying to do so; surely it
should be possible to buy soft drinks
with cash at such a big event, in very
hot conditions? Our other criticisms
were the extreme shortage of litter
bins; far too few to handle the
quantities of drinks cans, colour
powder sachets, food wrappers and so
forth; and, this year, parents had to
pay $5 for their kids to go and enjoy
the jumping castles and other such
entertainment. Last year this was
thrown in, creating the expectation that
the same would be repeated.
Nonetheless -a great event, and much
fun had by all!

for rural people, resultant decreased poaching, and
preventing spread of diseases from domestic to wild

Harare SPCA works to eliminate cruelty to animals in
Harare. It comprises, an inspectorate, veterinary
hospital and re-homing centre.
The inspectorate investigates and prosecutes all cases of
cruelty reported to it, visits homes of potential adopters
before any animal leaves the re-homing centre and does
spot checks after adoption. Surgery provides medical
care, vaccinations and sterilisation to animals in SPCA
care and animals of underprivileged owners. Large
percentage of veterinary treatments are pro bono or
subsidised. SPCA never turns away any animal in need.
Mobile veterinary unit goes out five days a week to high
density areas to treat, vaccinate and dip animals whose
owners are unable to bring them to hospital. In 2014 so
far over 4 800 animals have 5
been treated at SPCA
hospital and an equal number seen by the mobile unit.
Re-homing centre houses 200 animals all looking for
homes. Due to increasing numbers of abused,
abandoned, unwanted and surrendered animals, and pro
bono and subsidised veterinary treatment provided,
SPCA is not covering costs. SPCA is the official municipal
pound, but receives no official grants or assistance,
surviving on donations, money from adoption fees, and
veterinary treatment that is paid for.

A Very Hot Europcar 20 Miler 2014!
The 20 Miler is a historic running race in Zimbabwe,
being its longest established event. This year marked
the 44th edition – making this, the same age as the
famous Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town!
Europcar has been generously sponsoring this race
for several years, and it carries significant prize
money, and attracts the country's top elite runners. In
its long history, various companies have put their
name to this challenging race, while its route has
remained the same: Starting way out on the Shamva
Road, the runners tough out this almost entirely uphill
course at the hottest time of year, taking Enterprise
Road back into Newlands, then Churchill Avenue, and
finally ending at Old Georgian's Sports Club in
Groombridge, home of the Harare Athletics Club
(HAC) who launched this race back in 1970.
This year, two person relay teams were permitted
entry, running 16km each, and 39 teams entered,
while there were 211 entries for the full 32km race. Proof of the challenging weather conditions was demonstrated
by the 35% drop out rate! It was very hot and humid, and runners were very grateful for the frequent, friendly water
points, all but one of them generously sponsored by companies. The atmosphere was festive and there was much
camaraderie amongst runners along the route, and plenty of supporters both at the Start, along the way, and at the
end. There were prizes for the top three finishers in all categories, Open, Veteran, Master, Grand Master in the full
distance race (20 miles/32km), and in the Relays, and a very festive and enjoyable prize giving and social time was
had by all at the race's end, with most staying on for some hours, including for lunch! Finishers received a lovely
commemorative T shirt courtesy of main sponsor Europcar, plus chocolate milk (a good recovery drink for athletes)
and very nice cap from another regular corporate sponsor at running events, Dendairy. Fuchs, also a regular,
donated the prizes for the first man and woman to reach their
21km 'hotspot' water point.
This was my fourth Europcar 20 Miler – the first, in a 16k relay
team, the next three, taking on the full distance. I thoroughly
enjoyed the event, and found it much less daunting than the
previous two! This time, as I felt somewhat 'undertrained' for
the race, having had lots of work and other pressures lately,
and being consequently very sleep deprived so I decided to
experiment with walk-breaks, a strategy employed by runners
to eke out their energy and stamina, pace themselves, and
have something left to give in the last tough few kays. It was
the first time that I used this system in a more scientific, less
random way, from early on the race, not knowing what the
outcome would be, but thinking that then at least I would
finish! I usually run most of the way in races regardless of
distance, with a few walk-breaks right near the end, and in the
previous two editions of the 20 Miler, I had finished thoroughly exhausted! It's hard to start walkbreaks early, as most runners don't do this, and one feels a bit intimidated as they stream past you,
some looking askance and even commenting incredulously! However, to my surprise and delight,
this experiment really paid off! I ran the race fully 18 minutes faster than last year, finishing in 3
hours 29, making the 'Sub 3½ Hours' for the first time, and had lots more energy to give at the end,
enabling me to put on a spurt towards the finish. I recovered much faster than usual, too, and was
delighted to be Third Master Lady home; not so remarkable when there are few in the category, but
nonetheless it is nice to receive recognition as an over 50 runner!
