If you're looking for somewhere new to go and explore and enjoy nature, if you're
interested in San rock art, or if you want a beautiful setting for a wedding or party,
there is a lovely 'new kid on the block'! It's really close to Harare but still provides that

the rocks and kopjes to explore and the wonderful playground area, with the swings, tree house and platform, jungle gym, wendy house
and aerial slide all blending beautifully into the natural environment. There is also a giant outdoor version of Snakes and Ladders and
Mini Golf – no extra charge and all equipment supplied. Dombombira has trained staff on hand for parties and functions, and to keep an
eye on the children in the playground for safety's sake, especially when using the popular aerial slide. There is a network of nature trails
around this amazing area too, which are well marked and lovely to explore.
If you prefer a guide, you can have one (at no charge), who will teach you
about some of the uses of the indigenous trees and fruit found here.
Examples of tree species are currently being labelled. Dombombira is
proving popular for school trips, and is a very educational nature reserve.
There are both wild and domestic animals to see and enjoy, and a little
museum with various items of interest found in and around the area which
has a rich history. Animals such as donkeys and sheep have found their
safe and harmonious new homes here, after being rescued by Veterinarians
for Animal Welfare (VAWZ). ...to page 5

School Plays
By Jacqueline Collins

One of the things that keeps me going while I am in
the middle of my reports is the thought that once
they are finished I will be able to enjoy watching the
School plays. I just love school plays and never
cease to marvel at the creativity of the dedicated
Drama teachers, who, without fail, manage to come
up with brilliant productions at the end of each term.
This term, I happened to see two school plays, one at
Chisipite and one at Hellenic. Interestingly, both
plays had a similar theme, in that the young
characters befriend a being that is not quite of this

world. In the Hellenic Play, “Johnny and the Dead,”
Johnny and his friends discover the ghosts or “the
Post Senior Citizens” from the local cemetery and in
the Chisipite play, “Skellig”, Michael and his friend
Mina get to know a strange creature, part angel,
part owl and part homeless man. Both plays also
ponder about the meaning of education, the Hellenic
play mused about the role of History in the
community and the Chisipite Play examined
experimental styles of teaching.

their fate, if they enjoy themselves too much
the way that pupils can suddenly emerge with the most amazing talent on stage. I often
find it quite an emotional experience to see how young people develop over the years and
also from production to production. This was particularly the case for me with the Hellenic
Mandifadza Mazhude as Mina, the keen birdwatcher performance this year, since about five of the
leading characters in the play were young people
that I had known since they were about 3 years
old from my Mothers’ group. I have been rather
a fan of Sam Brakarsh, the leading character, ever
since his delightful performance as Puck in the
Midsummer Night's Dream play a few years ago.

Tantalising Trout with Ginger and Coriander
I just thought that I would have to pass on this shopping tip that my friend passed on to me
recently. TM and Pick and Pay have this super scheme on at the moment, where you get
stamps with your purchases. I have never got very excited by other supermarkets that offer a
huge prize, like a fancy car because it just seems like you will never win the prize. Also you
usually have to fill in so many forms with all your details in, that in the end I just cannot be
bothered. However, this one appeals to me because after a few shops, you can earn enough
stamps for a knife or a pair of kitchen scissors. I got such a thrill the other day when I finally
walked away with a new sharp vegetable knife, a little bit of instant gratification was rather
fun for a change.
Recently, I made this dish for my Pescetarian friends and they really raved over it, so I
thought I would include it as it is a simple but effective recipe.
Tantalising Trout with Ginger and Coriander
Serves 4
! 4 Claremont Trout
! 2 limes or lemons, thinly grate the rind
from one and then cut it in half and
squeeze out the juice. Thinly slice the
other one, cutting the slices in half.
! ¼ cup( 60g or 2oz) of sugar
! 10cm piece of ginger cut into
matchsticks
! ¼ cup (60mls) of lime or lemon juice
! 1/3 cup(10g) fresh coriander leaves
! 1 red chilli, deseeded and cut into
thin strips
! 250 mls water
Method
! Preheat the oven to moderate 180˚C/ 350˚F.
! Fill the fish cavities with the lime or lemon slices,
chilli and some of the ginger.
! Place the fish on a large piece of lightly
greased foil.
! Wrap the fish and bake on a baking tray for 20
minutes, and then uncover the trout and grill until
the skin is slightly browned for about 5 minutes.
The fish should flake easily when tested with a fork.
! Meanwhile, combine the sugar and the lime or
lemon juice with the water in a small pan and stir
without boiling until the sugar dissolves.
! Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for
about 10 minutes until syrupy. Stir in the remaining
ginger and the rind from the lime or lemon.
! Put fish on a plate and garnish with
coriander leaves.
! Pour the lemon syrup over the trout.

There are also rabbits, goats, guinea pigs, tortoises, cats, and in
the wild, dassies, squirrels, monkeys, a wide range of birds,
lizards and snakes, including pythons. Don't be put off by this
however. It is well known that thousands of snakes ive and travel
around in Harare's suburbs that people hardly ever see – but they
are doing us all a favour by keeping down the rat population,
which is what attracts them to areas where people live in the first
place. Snakes are as scared of people as we are of them, so live
and let live, don't threaten a snake and it won't threaten you.
Add Dombombira to your list of great places for a family outing,
or to hold a function, from a child's birthday party to full scale
wedding in a truly enchanting natural environment. Day trippers
pay $5 per adult and $2 per child and inexpensive braai packs,
picnic food and other catering are readily available – just ask.
Or bring your own braai or picnic food and drink. There are
super braai facilities laid on in lovely settings. Drive out of the
city on Mutare Road, and take a right into Chiremba Road just
before central Ruwa. After that, there are clear, frequent
signposts to Dombombira. Pre-booking is
essential: Phone 0772466683.

Harare area BirdLife survey of raptors and wetland birds
in derelict brickfields - an important habitat for wetland
species. During the dry season vleis and grasslands often
burn. With cultivation and urban development, wetland bird
species are losing habitat and declining in numbers. The clay
soils and depth of these brickfields means water remains year
round and reedbeds are extensive in some. Often bordered by
steep sides and not impacted by people as much as vleis and
dambos. All bird species to be surveyed, waterbirds will also
be counted. BirdLife would like the public to tell them
locations of derelict quarries, sand pits & brickfields especially
south and east of Harare (Mt Hampden already scouted).
