Sunday, March 8, 2015 ~ 2:00 PM ~ St. Odilia Catholic Church ~ Free-will Offering
The St. Philip’s in the Hills Episcopal Church’s Canterbury Choir is delighted to present a
program to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of St. Odilia Parish in Tucson.
The program will include masterpieces of sacred choral literature, including Allegri’s celebrated
“Miserere” and Josef Rheinberger’s “Cantus Missae” for double-choir. This rarely performed
masterpiece is a setting of the Mass which utilizes the traditional mass texts, is music of power
and expressiveness, taking the harmonic richness of the late 19th century Romanticism in combination with the polyphonic tradition of the Renaissance and the use of divided choirs for antiphonal effects. Other works celebrate the French and English sacred choral traditions. St.
Odilia. St. Odilia Parish is privileged to host this wonderful group of singers.
St. Philip's in the Hills Episcopal Church in Tucson has a history of fine church music dating back
to the founding of the parish in 1936. The original choir was a professional male octet which
sang from the choir loft, where the Holtkamp pipe organ is now located. The Canterbury Choir
is a mixed-voice professional caliber ensemble, who sing at the 11:15 Sunday Eucharist most
weeks during the choir season. Their repertoire spans the history of Western music, from the
earliest chant, through Palestrina, Bach, Mozart, Brahms, and the great tradition of Anglican
Church Music found in England and America. The group is unique among church choirs in
Southern Arizona in offering regular concerts of sacred music to the wider community outside
of St. Philip's.
This will be a wonderful experience! We hope to see you there!
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
May the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all!
On this FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME, the scriptures in the liturgy give us the following for our consideration:
“Job’s cry of hopelessness stands in marked contrast to the hope of those who put their trust in Jesus, who “heals the broken hearted
and binds up their wounds. Such are the blessings of the good news.” (ORDO, 8thFebruary 2015)
There is HOPE for our world, if we indeed, put all our trust in Him, who has given everything for our salvation. His SEVEN LAST WORDS,
before He has died remind us of that HOPE. This year, during our LENTEN JOURNEY, which will begin on ASH WEDNESDAY, (18TH February),
we will begin to hear focus homilies using his seven last WORDS. Each Sunday, we will use one of His last Words, as the base and foundation
of the homilies, and in fact, it will serve as our PARISH MISSION. Below are JESUS’ FINAL WORDS BEFORE “HE HAS DIED,” and the date on
which we will hear the reflections on it:
‘FATHER, FORGIVE THEM, FOR THEY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING.” - FEBRUARY 18TH – ASHWEDNESDAY
“I TELL YOU THE TRUTH, YOU WILL BE WITH ME IN PARADISE.” - FEBRUARY 25TH – 1st SUNDAY OF LENT
“WOMAN, HERE IS YOUR SON; HERE IS YOUR MOTHER.” - MARCH 1st – 2nd SUNDAY OF LENT
“MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME.” - MARCH 8th-3rd SUNDAY OF LENT
“I AM THIRSTY.” - MARCH 15th – 4th SUNDAY OF LENT
“IT IS FINISHED.” - MARCH 23rd – 5th SUNDAY OF LENT
“FATHER, INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMEND MY SPIRIT.” - MARCH 29th – 6th SUNDAY OF LENT
May the good Lord inspire us all to have a good Lenten Journey.
In the service of God and of His Church,
Fr. Miguel
