The Sacrament of Baptism
Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at
12 Noon and on the fifth Sunday of the Month during the
10:00am Mass. Before selecting a Baptism date, parents should
secure letters of eligibility for their selected Godparents and
present them at the rectory. Parents should also plan on
Attending our Parish’s Pre-Jordan program before setting a
Baptism date.
All baptisms are celebrated in Sacred Heart Church.

Saturday afternoon: 3:00pm – 3:45pm.
Wednesday morning: Immediately following the 8:00am Mass.

#143 Sacred Heart
Dear Friends,
As hard as it might be to believe, in less than a week and a
half, we will begin the season of Lent with our observance of Ash
Wednesday on February 18th. The Season of Lent is the Liturgical
Season that prepares us for our great celebration of Easter and the Resurrection of our Lord Jesus.
However, it does not simply prepare us for Easter; the Season of Lent affords each of us the opportunity
to carefully and honestly evaluate our relationship with the Lord and take deliberate steps to improve
(when needed) or maintain (as necessary) our relationship with the Lord.
Ashes will be distributed on Ash Wednesday at our 6:30am morning Mass, at our 8:00am
morning Mass, at a 12 noon Prayer Service and at a 7:00pm evening Mass. (Please remember that
ashes are ordinarily not distributed outside of the context of a Mass or Prayer Service.)
Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstinence for Catholics, which means that all Catholics
over the age of fourteen are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of
Lent as well as Good Friday; and all Catholics over the age of eighteen but younger than sixty years of age
are bound to observe Ash Wednesday and Good Friday as days of fasting by limiting themselves to a
single full meal, with two lighter meals during the day and no eating or snacks - which would include
coffee, tea, soft drinks, etc. - between the meals. A person may consume water or medication at any
time without breaking their Ash Wednesday or Good Friday fast.
The Church urges each of us to use the days of Lent to deepen and nourish our faith. The ways to
do this are many and varied! I would like to offer you a few suggestions:
ATTEND DAILY MASS. If your schedule permits you, join us for the celebration of Mass
during the week. Morning Masses are celebrated at Sacred Heart at 6:30am (Monday through Friday) and
at 8:00am (Monday through Saturday). Additionally, we will offer a 7:00pm evening Mass each
Wednesday evening during Lent. (For those of you who may work in Center City, many parishes in the
city offer lunchtime Masses for your convenience.)
ATTEND OUR LENTEN SCRIPTURE SERIES. Father Patrick Brady, a professor of Sacred
Scripture at Saint Charles Seminary will offer a three-part presentation on Monday, March 2nd, Monday,
March 9th and Monday, March 16th in Sacred Heart Church. Each presentation will last about one hour.
After his presentation, Father Brady will welcome an opportunity for questions and discussion regarding
his presentation. Watch our future bulletins for more details about his presentations.
PRAY THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS. We will pray the Stations of the Cross each Friday
evening at 7:00pm during Lent in our Church. The Stations of the Cross have long been a ‘staple’ of Lent
and remind us with vivid reflection of the life-giving events of that first Good Friday.
MAKE TIME FOR PRAYER AND SPEND TIME BEFORE THE BLESSED
SACRAMENT. Set aside a few minutes each day to offer to the Lord. You can use this time for your
favorite prayer form, pray the rosary, read Sacred Scripture or simply place yourself in the presence of the
Lord and seek His Holy Spirit to guide you. Our Church remains open each day for private visits from
6:30am to 6:00pm.
THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK. Our parish offers a limited supply of “The Little Black Books”
which offer daily reflections for each day. The books are free of charge and can be found in the back of
Church while our supply lasts. The books will be available in the back of Church beginning on Monday,
February 16th.
READ ABOUT THE SAINTS. The Church offers us, literally, thousands of saints as faithful
heroes and heroines. Knowledge of their lives is a ‘game plan’ for living faithfully before the Lord. Stories
of their lives are readily available on many websites, as well as in many books stores or at any of the
Religious goods stores.
I will continue in my column next week with more spiritual opportunities during the season of
Lent. Lent will be over before you know it! Make the best of Lent, so the Lord can make the best of you!

To prepare for the World Meeting of Families and Pope Francis’s visit, we
are studying a catechesis on family life called Love is Our Mission: The Family
Fully Alive. Each month, our parish is reflecting on one chapter. Previous
monthly reflections are online at PhillyEvang.org/wmof. You can order the
catechesis and learn more about next year’s big event, at
WorldMeeting2015.org.
February 2015: Chapter 4: Two Become One
Our first three chapters reviewed basic Christian faith. We saw how
confidence in Jesus opens thedoor to faith, enabling us to know God
and what God has done in history. God creates male and female in his
image, and makes a covenant with Israel and the Church. God is faithful
to his promises, even when we sin. Because God loved us in this way,
we spend our lives trying to return our love to God and share it with our
neighbor. In this month’s chapter and in the chapters to come, we will
study the implications of these doctrines for marriage and the family.
When husband and wife promise to love each other as God loves us all,
they make a commitment to love not only romantically, but also with
mercy and forgiveness. Our culture sometimes teaches us to think of
marriage as a negotiable contract between two individuals who happen
to feel sexual chemistry. This view of love is a recipe for instability, since
it is still premised on individualism and the waxing and waning of romantic feelings. The Church’s
alternative account of love enables us to transcend the culture of individualism and become who we were
created to be. Founded on Christ, sustained in the sacraments, Catholic marriage builds humility and self
-sacrifice into the dynamic between male and female. As this month’s chapter explains in more detail,
sacramental marriage creates intimate communion even in times of suffering and hardship. “Love is our
mission,” as our catechism’s title declares, because Christ’s love frees us from false, shrunken accounts

Though we are sad that Theresa is retiring, Father O'Sullivan
has begun advertising the position and hopes to have a new
Director of Music Ministry in place by March.

Our Parish Fundraising Committee will meet on
