‘Butch’ Middleton dies in Germany
Carney Mark (Butch)
Middleton passed away in
his home in Maintal,
Germany on Jan. 29 at the
age of 68. He was born
March 28, 1946.
Carney led a unique life
that began during his early
years in Crosby where he
cultivated a passion for running, downhill skiing and
academics.
In 1969, Carney was
united in marriage to his high
school sweetheart, Mary
O’Brien. Together, they welcomed Amy and Ashley into
this world.
After graduating from C-I
High School in Crosby, he
attended
St.
John’s
University where he pursued
a degree in mathematics,
graduating second in his
class. He then enrolled in the
University of Minnesota’s
School of Dentistry where he
participated in ROTC. After
graduating in 1972, he enlisted in the U.S. Army.
After basic training, the
Army transferred Carney for
a three-year tour of duty in
Heidelberg, Germany, followed by a position as a U.S.
Army Dental Corps officer at
Fort Devens, MA.
Following his time as a
military officer, Carney and
family settled down in
Carrington, ND where he
managed a private dental
office until 1990 when he
was called to active duty during the Gulf War. He served
as commanding officer of a
U.S.
Army
Dental
Detachment deployed to the
Middle East Theatre of
Operation during Operation
Desert Store/Desert Shield.
While Carney devoted
many years to military service, he eventually returned to
work locum tenens in his
homeland of North Dakota
and Minnesota. He didn’t sit
still long, as his humanitarian
nature took over and
inspired him to care for
patients in Panama as well
as Kosovars during the war
in Bosnia.

Germany in 1999, a position
he held until his death. He

longest-serving project manager for the U.S. Army Dental
Contract. More importantly,
according to colleagues and
friends, he is considered the
most helpful sponsor, mentor
and compassionate manager
in the field of dentistry and
military leadership.
Despite his many prestigious military and medical
accomplishments, Carney
remained a loyal, loving
father, brother and grandfather to his family. His family
