Crowd numbers
dampened by rain
Around 300 people turned out for
the Collinwood Summer Food Fair
on Saturday afternoon, despite the
morning’s rain.
Organiser Pete Watkins wasn’t
happy about the rain and said normally they expect a turnout of over
1000 people, though the feedback
from people who did come was
great and there was more food for
everybody.
“By the time it started at three
o’clock, the rain had stopped and
everybody who did come really
enjoyed the food, the music and the
entertainment,” he says.
In its eighth year running, the fair
showcased some delectable food
selections such as wallaby, tahr,
hare, goat and mussel patties.
For those not ambitious enough
to try something out of the ordinary,
there was still a spit roast, whitebait
and even pancakes to keep everyone happy.
Pete says hangi is always a
favourite on the day, and much of
the crowd waited around until later
in the afternoon when the hangi
was lifted so they could get their
share.
Campbell and Renee Peters led
the field from beginning to end during the wife-carrying race, though in
their case it was a father-daughter
duo instead.
As always it was entertaining for
everyone to watch as more than a
dozen pairs made a dash around
the field.
Live music on the day was performed by local favourites Phil
Rogers and Judy Strange where
they rocked out songs by the
Beatles and the Eagles among
other hits.

Hangi was an all-round crowd
pleaser on the day.
