w Viewer Magazine February 2015 AFRO POP the ultimate cultural exchange - Season 7 With Host Yaya DaCosta Airs Tuesdays at 9pm beginning February 3rd On the Cover AFROPOP: THE ULTIMATE CULTURAL EXCHANGE The anthology series Afropop: The Ultimate Cultural Exchange returns for its 7th season to continue its exploration of contemporary life, art and culture in Africa and the evolving Diaspora. The four independent films in this season reveal the personal stories behind complicated and controversial issues, including gay rights in Jamaica, female empowerment in Senegal, terrorism in Eritrea, and the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Zambia. While most found little gold, they did find a mother lode in farming, fishing, commerce and making wine. Italian Americans in California documents the experience of Italian immigrants in California, which was markedly different from that of their compatriots elsewhere in the United States. Through stories set in seven Italian communities throughout California, this film examines how economic and social mobility became possible for many Italians in the Golden State. It is also a look at how immigrant identity is maintained and transformed as immigrants become assimilated into mainstream America. The current film is a follow-up to the filmmakers’ critically acclaimed Pane Amaro (Bitter Bread) on the Italian immigration to the East Coast. Italian Americans in California, too, is based on extensive research and weaves together oral histories by community members with scholarly analyses which provide the larger historical context. Every summer, as staff put stamps on postcards, the penguins return from their fishing grounds to their breeding grounds, trek nearly two miles across sea ice and snow, rush to find a partner, build a nest, lay eggs and protect them from predators, and finally get down to the task of raising their young. We see their four-month drama unfold as cruise ships come and go, bringing tourists to buy postcards and photograph penguins -- the backdrop to the penguins’ lives. Airs Thursday, February 19th at 7PM and Sunday, February 22nd at 5PM SUPPORT · DONATE · SPONSOR · WWW.KLCS.ORG NOVA: COLOSSEUM - ROMAN DEATH TRAP The Colosseum is a monument to Roman imperial power and cruelty. Its graceful lines and harmonious proportions concealed a highly efficient design and advanced construction methods that made hundreds of arches out of 100,000 tons of stone. In its elliptical arena, tens of thousands of gladiators, slaves, prisoners and wild animals met their deaths. Ancient texts report lions and elephants emerging from beneath the floor, as if by magic, to ravage gladiators and people condemned to death. Then, just as quickly, the Colosseum could be flooded with so much water that ships could engage in sea battles. Could these legends be true? Now, with access to one of the world’s most protected world heritage sites, archaeologists and engineers team up to re-create ancient Roman techniques to build a 25-foot lifting machine and trap-door system capable of releasing a wolf into the Colosseum’s arena for the first time in 1,500 years. Arts/Lifestyle/Family LIVE FROM THE ARTISTS DEN The innovative concert series Live From the Artists Den returns for its eighth season, featuring Billboard-topping, Grammy-winning artists performing in intimate venues, ranging from a former bank in Houston, Texas to a hidden gem of a museum in New York’s Washington Heights neighborhood. In the premiere episode, country superstar Tim McGraw tears through a dozen songs at The Corinthian bank building in Houston, including hits “Southern Girl” and “One of Those Nights,” as well as new, never-before-heard material from his forthcoming album. Other featured episodes include Mexican guitar virtuosos Rodrigo y Gabriela at the Hispanic Society of America in New York, British pop star Lily Allen at the Manhattan Center’s Grand Ballroom, and breezy singer-songwriter Jason Mraz at a secret location in Los Angeles.
