Go Red for Heart Month Alhambra Newsline By Tori Couch Greystone is committed to healthy, worthy and impactful causes. We are proud to support the American Heart Association's Go Red For Women initiative and National Heart Month. This February, Greystone kicks of the Go Red Survivor Gallery, a traveling gallery of heart issue survivors featuring Greystone's own associates. Traveling through the Tampa Bay and St. Petersburg area, the gallery showcases women who have dealt with heart attacks, arrhythmia (dangerously rapid heart rate), and battled through heart conditions from birth. Many women may be unaware of potential heart attack signs which differ greatly from men. Often misdiagnosed, women's symptoms include: Chest discomfort or upper body pain in the back, shoulders, arms, stomach, jaw, neck or throat Lightheadedness or dizziness Nausea or vomiting Inability to sleep or unusual fatigue Shortness of breath or trouble breathing Find Greystone on the Web! Follow us on Facebook and Twitter, and check out our website for the latest updates. February, 2015 As the 2015 Go Red Tampa Bay Chair, Connie Bessler, CEO of Greystone Healthcare Management, is raising awareness and support for women's heart health. "Through education we can highlight the different ways heart concerns can manifest themselves and encourage better care and safety. A number one killer of women, we must be constantly vigilant against such a serious – and often overlooked – health concern." Support Heart Health month by: Wearing red on Go Red Day, February 6th. He is home and is thriving. We are so fortunate to have Andrea Bell as our interim while Chrissy is on her maternity leave. We have had a very busy beginning to our new year with continued upgrades including one very large upgrade that is pending. We will be upgrading our fire alarm system. This work is anticipated to take 3 weeks to complete and hopefully will not inconvenience anyone too much. I want to reach out at this time and ask if anyone is interested in volunteering for us on the weekends to call Bingo. We also have a need for volunteers to read to residents and to assist residents with correspondence. If you or someone you know wants to be part of our volunteer team, please contact me or Chris in Activities for more information. We are still in Flu/cold season, so please resist visiting if you have any cold-like symptoms. This is especially important this season since the current vaccine has not been as helpful to prevent infection as in previous years. As always, I welcome any new ideas or suggestions. Come see me anytime, my door is always open. My first job was actually helping take care of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park! Our small gardens here at Alhambra bring hours of visual enjoyment to residents and guests. I especially love regularly hearing, “Nice garden you have out there!”; I can definitely put this right up there as “The Best Job Ever”! The calling BINGO on Saturdays is really new to me….just gotta get used to “G Fifty, G 50....WHAT”!!! I believe it is an honor to help anywhere I can in this community of good friends into which I have grown close the last couple years. 3 Yrs 1 Yr 1 Yr 4 Yrs 2 Yrs 2 Yrs 2 Yrs 3 Yrs 2 Yrs 1 Yr 1 Yr 1 Yr 4 Yrs FAMILY: Sister, Cousins SCHOOLING: Attended schooling in New York, California and Florida CAREER: LPN: Several various positions in the past MARRIAGE (WHO, WHERE, WHEN…): Las Vegas wedding to Michael in 1979 CHILDREN (NAMES, BIRTHDATE): None HOBBIES: Reading…and Spending Money! Written By: Christopher Langebrake; Therapy Director Written By: Christopher Williams; Recreation Director Daveeda K. came to us back in August with a history of a debilitating stroke. She began participating in therapy almost immediately and it became clear that Daveeda had a long way to go for recovery. She stuck with her therapy and worked hard every day. She slowly learned how to walk in the parallel bars with some assistance at first, then less and less. She continued to have difficulty walking outside the parallel bars. We were able to have a brace made for her to improve her stability and allow her to walk with a cane and some assistance! Thanks to all of her hard work in therapy, Daveeda is currently planning her discharge to her new place! Daveeda’s story of hard work over time shows us all what can be accomplished when one does not give up! Introducing A New Player On The Alhambra Team Written By: Sandra Fontenot; Medical Records Director Hi! I would like to introduce myself to all of you: My name is Sandra Fontenot and am the new Medical Records Coordinator at Alhambra (I am also an LPN). I am sure many have already seen me around the facility, and you can always address as Sandra or Sandy, because I will answer to both. I am a transfer from Louisiana, and YES, I am a Cajun. I love to cook authentic Cajun food, and as you can tell, I like to eat it too. I have been married to my wonderful husband, Michael, for almost 42 years. Together we have three children, four handsome grandsons, a dog and two cats. We initially moved here to be close to our sons, and we LOVE Florida. Currently we are seeking a house to buy and really make this our home. Everyone at Alhambra has been so nice to me and really made me feel welcome. I can be of any help, you can most often find me in my office (across from Activities Room), or at either of the nurses stations. Looking forward to meeting all of you! 7 Alhambra Celebrates The New 2015 Year: Love & Good Health Go Hand-In-Hand A New Year Celebrations Around The World Performance Written By: Christopher Williams; Recreation Director As many will agree, “love” can be quite a pricey emotion. At the same time, if people could actually buy love, it should be compensated under health insurance. Confused??? Let’s now browse over the numerous health benefits that stem from this wonderful emotion. One convincing fact from research by the U.S. Health and Human Services Department that immediately supports this theory is that married couples have shorter average stays in the hospital and less visits to their local walk-in clinics or primary care physicians. This is most likely due to spouses looking out for one another: Motivating more exercise, Promoting more diets, etc. Another conclusive piece of evidence by the Health Department is the lowered amounts of depression and substance abuse found in married couples. This would make sense considering social isolation is connected with higher levels of depression, and greater levels of depression are linked to those with substance abuse problems. Conclusive evidence found from numerous studies in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine show that people in relationships consisting of mutual love of each other had far less moments of anxiety about life in general, which then leads to lower blood pressure. In fact, MRI’s of the brain displayed that people in “long-lasting love” relationships, as well as couples who classified themselves as “newly passionate” lovers both stimulated the same area of the brain that produces “good feeling” endorphins; lowering blood pressure and increasing better general health. All the general health advantages of love seem to have a “trickle down” effect to further well-being remunerations. For instance, investigation from WebMD show that love increases better stress management. These lower levels of stress then promote fewer colds/ flu symptoms and faster healing of wounds. This in turn, would explain why studies show that almost 60% of couples in lengthy marriages have longer lives than single individuals. Then on that, research led by the Journal of Family Psychology deduced happiness was far more affected by the quality of love between couples/families than any other factor….even the level of mutual income. From all the studies and conclusions gathered, it looks like the power of love in fact DOES trump the power of money! 6 3 2014 Christmas Day Party “Dixie Cares” Teens From Dixie Hollins High School Are Back To Spend Time With Residents On A Weekly Basis Valentine’s Day Word Search Solutions: Christmas Day was capped off with a party including: tables of deserts, sing-along carols with Denise on guitar and presents from our favorite holiday character! 4 5
