Bulletin - Saint Francis of Assisi Parish

St. Francis of Assisi Parish
February 8, 2015 • Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
......................................................................................
From the Pastor’s Desk
W
e welcome Bishop Soto to the 9:30 am Mass
for the dedica on of our new altar and ambo
(pulpit). If you take a good look at both the
altar and ambo, you will no ce that they are very similar in
design. They were not designed this way simply to match,
but to indicate that they are two equally important elements
of our celebra on of Eucharist—the Liturgy of the Word and
the Liturgy of the Eucharist. One is the table of the Word and
the other is the table of the Lord’s Supper and Sacrifice, the
Sacrifice of the Paschal Lamb on
the cross.
In every celebra on of
Eucharist, we remember two
historical moments. The Words
of Ins tu on (the consecra on)
evoke the memories of both the
Last Supper and of Calvary. From
the Last Supper, we experience
the Eucharis c ritual form as a
meal; from the events of Calvary, we experience the Eucharist
(in its sacramental content) as
sacrifice. This is the dual meaning of the “altar-table.”
In the early Church, when there were no churches, believers gathered in homes like yours and mine around the ea ng
table. These were called “house churches.” As the Church
community grew and became ins tu onalized, large buildings,
some mes called basilicas, were built to accommodate the
numbers and to provide a sense of stability and power for the
Chris an Community. When large fixed stone altars, like “altars
of sacrifice,” were built in these churches, the Eucharist was
referred to more as the Holy Sacrifice. Through this historical
development, the altar as table began to lose its significance
as the “family table” that the community gathered around to
celebrate the Lord’s Supper. They now gathered in the midst of
the High Altar in the nave of the church.
The documents of the Second Va can Council refer to
the altar both as the place of the Church’s sacrifice and as the
table of the Church’s banquet. So, we now understand it to
be both an altar of sacrifice and a banquet table. The instrucon of the Rite of Dedica on of a Church and Altar states,
“The Chris an Altar is by its very nature a table of sacrifice
and at the same me a table of the paschal banquet—a
unique altar on which the sacrifice of the cross is perpetuated
in mystery throughout the ages un l Christ comes; —a table
at which the Church’s children assemble to give thanks to God
and receive the Body and Blood of Christ.”
In the early Church, at the me of early Chris an
persecu on, the “cult of the martyrs” had an influence on
the Church’s liturgical calendar and space. The “birthdays
into eternal life” of the martyrs were commemorated originally at the tombs of the martyrs,
and basilicas were built over these tombs. The
remains of the martyrs had a kind of “sacramental
significance,” because their deaths were seen as a
par cipa on in the death of Christ. Later, caskets
containing the bodies of the martyrs, were placed
under altars. You can s ll see them in many
churches in Europe. In me, the placing of relics
in the altar became part of an essen al element of
dedica ng an altar.
We follow this tradi on by placing in our altar
the relics of Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi, of soon-to-beSt. Junipero Serra, and of Saints Perpetual and Felicity. These
relics remind us that these holy people were nourished by
God’s Word and the Body and Blood of Jesus, and that they
are examples of the power of the Word and Eucharist to lead
us to conversion and holiness.
So, this Sunday, we gather with Bishop Soto around the
Table of the Word and the Altar/Table of the Eucharist to
dedicate these two essen al elements, so that, through the
stories of salva on, our hunger for God is made present and
real in our lives; and we are fed by the Body and Blood of
Jesus, so that we may give sacrificially of ourselves to others
in love as Jesus did for us. These two focal points of our ritual
make present the saving power of God through the Bread of
Life and the cross of salva on.
Please give Bishop Soto a warm welcome this weekend,
and please welcome Deacon Ryan Thornton, OFM as well. This
is Ryan’s first visit to St. Francis Parish, and I pray that it will not
be his last!
Un l Next week…. May the Lord Give You Peace…. kjl

From Our School
Thank You!
The Bookworm Is Here!
Dear St. Francis of Assisi Parishioners,
O
ur school now has a Bookworm, a rolling bookcase that
will travel between the playground
and the indoor area near Brunsman
Hall, containing donated books for
our students that they can keep for a
day, a week, or forever.... Check out
our school’s Facebook page for more
informa on about this project:

W
e are truly blessed here at St. Francis
of Assisi Elementary School to learn,
pray and grow in this special, Franciscan environment. Our blessings would not be possible without
the generous support of you, the members of the
St. Francis Parish. As you support our school, you help
strengthen, foster and invest in the future of all of our
students and the overall well being of the Church.
... We want to thank you for all that you have done and
con nue to do to help our school. We are truly grateful for
your prayers, contribu ons and dona ons. We also appreciate
the gi of your me and talents that you so graciously share
with us....
Illness and the Liturgy
Illness and the Liturgy
O
... Together, Parish and School, we are a strong and
vibrant community. We hope that you will con nue to join
us in our endeavors and in our never-ending celebra on of
Franciscan, Catholic educa on. From all of us…. Thank you!
ur tradi on of prayer involves close contact with each
other. By gathering together, singing, praying, sharing a
pew, exchanging the sign of peace and receiving communion
we respond to God’s call to worship as members of Christ’s
body and to be nourished by Word and Sacrament. However,
if you are ill, it is a sign of charity for your brothers and sisters
to keep that illness from spreading to others.
Gratefully,
St. Francis of Assisi Elementary School Students & Staff
To help us to protect and care for our
brothers and
sisters, we are asked to:
• Pray the Lord’s Prayer with our hands
joined instead of holding hands.
Pancake
Breakfast
• Exchange a sign of peace that does not
involve touching others. (it helps to smile!)
• Receive Holy Communion in the form of bread only (un l
flu season has passed).

3. Jesus casts out darkness (demons).
When it was evening, a er sunset, they brought to him all
who were ill or possessed by demons.
4. Jesus retreats into prayer. He le and went off to a
