News from ATDF’s Artistic/Executive Director
next generation of tap dancers in NYC
who will go on to become our next wave
of tap professionals, dedicated amateurs,
and enthusiastic audiences.
The ATDF has made enormous progress in just one short year. I am very happy
to welcome three new board members this
year! Debra Beard, Mercedes Ellington
and Cynthia Roush have all become part
of our team, and I want to personally
thank them for jumping in and rolling up
their sleeves.
On May 23rd, we presented ATDF’s
First Annual Spring Gala at a local
club called Cielo, where we celebrated
the inauguration of the Gregory Hines
Youth Scholarship Fund which goes
directly towards training scholarships
to low-income and at-risk youth, and
aspiring young professionals. With an
amazing commitment from an outstanding fundraising committee which was
spearheaded by board members Debra
Beard, Hoagy B. Carmichael and Pam
Koslow Hines, we managed to raise more
funds than any past event ever in the
history of the organization! As a result,
our youth programs will guarantee that
our youth will not only develop important
skills and an in-depth knowledge of tap
dance technique and history, but they will
experience the sheer joy of rhythm! In
addition, their tap classes and education
will provide them with training that in
many cases leads to professional dance
and dance administration careers. Many
thanks to the numerous loyal supporters
and the amazing collection of new friends
that made this event such a remarkable
success! Your support helps ensure that
Tap Dance continues to influence, inform
and entertain new generations in our ever
evolving culture.
This summer, we celebrate our 20th
Anniversary as a non-profit organization by
presenting “From Five Points to Harlem”,
which is as part of Tap City, the sixth
annual New York City Tap Festival. You
can catch us in action all day June 28th
where we will present four free outdoor
performances downtown at Foley Square,
a free sand dance lesson up in Harlem
on July 10th, 133 classes for kids, teens
and adults in Chelsea from July 8th - July
15th, and 22 premiere performances and
other related events at the Duke on 42nd
Street from July 11th - July 22nd.

a vibrant and diverse global tap community and communicate across cultural and
national boundaries through this uniquely
American art form.

back then as the American Tap Dance
Orchestra, we presented a series of performances that set the stage for twenty
years of activities dedicated to advancing
tap dance as an American art form, and
set a new standard of excellence in quality
programming.
Currently, the ATDF offers on-going
Tap Classes for Youth and Adults, the
newly formed Tap City Youth Ensemble,
an annual Winter Tap Intensive, Youth
Training Scholarships, the Gregory Hines
Collection of American Tap Dance
Archives, seasonal New Tap Choreography
Showcases, the International Tap Dance
Hall of Fame, numerous tap awards, tap
film presentations and tap jams throughout Manhattan, and Tap City, the annual
New York City Tap Festival.
In February of 2005, the ATDF hired
a Development Consultant and began
creating our first 5 Year Strategic Plan,
which was then adopted by the board
of directors in November of the same
year. The plan not only focuses on board
development, marketing strategies and
infrastructure, but it has guided us to the
present.
In September, the ATDF expanded to
year-round tap dance training for children
and teens by establishing and developing
our very first Youth Education Initiative.

2005 - 2006 has
been a whirl-wind
season. In August

EDUCATION DIRECTOR
Education Initiative,
planning year-round tap training for kids
and teens. The keystone of the YEI in
the first year has been the Tap City Youth
Ensemble - our troupe of 36 advanced
young dancers, ages 9 - 19. Members of
the Ensemble come from four boroughs of
New York City, New Jersey, Connecticut,
Pennsylvania, and even two dancers who
commuted in from Michigan! What
a fabulous debut year! We brought in
choreographer Susan Hebach to direct
the Ensemble and the Junior Repertory
Ensemble. She worked weekly with the
groups and directed rehearsals of choreography by our amazing guest artists:
Brenda Bufalino, Ayodele Casel, Harold
Cromer, Michelle Dorrance, and Derick K.
Grant. The Ensemble learned ten works
ranging from classic to contemporary tap
repertory and performed throughout the
Spring. The Tap City Youth Ensemble
will perform every night at the Duke on
42nd Street Theater during the New York
City Tap Festival.

GREGORY HINES YOUTH
SCHOLARSHIP FUND
This year we gave out over $15,000 in
scholarships through our Gregory Hines
Youth Scholarship Fund. The ATDF
continues our commitment to provide
excellent tap training to all young dancers
regardless of their family’s ability to pay.
Full scholarships were awarded to young
dancers from East Harlem and other
underserved communities.

ARTS-IN-EDUCATION
The ATDF started several new programs in in public schools including a tap
program at the Churchill School, a NYC
charter school specializing in education
for learning disabled children and the
premier of the TCYE school show.
YEAR-ROUND YOUTH
TRAINING PROGRAM
The ATDF Youth Education Initiative
includes year-round tap classes on all
levels. Fall 2006 will bring expanded
programming with tap technique classes
for kids and teens, Creative Rhythms
Pre-Tap for 3 and 4 year olds, and Tap
Technique and Repertory for intermediate young dancers who aspire to join the
Youth Ensemble some day.
