This consulting engagement leverages group dynamics and envisioning exercises to identify and prioritize big data business opportunities, and provides a roadmap for executing on the vision. Research and Interviews Prior to the onsite workshop, EMC Consulting conducts research and interviews business and IT stakeholders to determine a targeted strategic business initiative (e.g., improve cross-sell effectiveness, reduce customer churn, improve customer satisfaction levels). We study the objectives, financial goals, and success metrics, challenges, KPIs, and progress-to-date. Finally, we identify the potential data sources relevant to the targeted business initiative that will be used to build analytic models. Data Exploration Next, we work with your IT team to acquire the sample sets (typically 5-6 gigabytes). EMC’s data science team prepares, enriches and explores the data sources to develop visualizations and build analytic models and mockups that will show the “art of the possible” in the envisioning exercises that follow. The model is typically built using a combination of R and Hadoop, to accelerate model development. This process may require iterations with the client IT team to acquire additional data. Workshop Execution The workshop day is used to brainstorm and prioritize business opportunities. Attendees include the business and IT leaders who were interviewed as part of the research. SERVICE OVERVIEW The agenda includes: • Big Data Overview. This section establishes a common foundation with respect to defining big data, and we present case studies that illustrate how other organizations are leveraging big data. • Envisioning Exercise. We review the envisioning model to help the business stakeholders visualize what is possible with available data sources and advanced analytics tools. We show how applying advanced analytics to the data can provide new business insights. The goal of the envisioning exercise is to help the participants imagine the types of business questions they can ask of the data. • Business Initiative Brainstorming. Here we use business valuation techniques to help the business stakeholders identify the types of questions that they would like answered with advanced analytics, and determine the decisions that they need to make with respect to the targeted business initiative. • Identifying Business Opportunities. Next we aggregate the business questions and actions into “themes” or business opportunities (e.g., revenue analysis, customer up-sell, customer churn, and branch performance analysis). • Prioritizing Business Opportunities. Finally, we guide the participants through a process where each opportunity is judged based upon its relative business value and implementation feasibility. Findings and Recommendations The final stage of the Big Data Vision Workshop is a presentation of the findings and recommendations to executive management.
