DIRT – It’s Where It’s At!
o change our urban climate, we must live in that climate-and be the change
we wish to see. The DIRT Park is an effort to make that change, and get
back to DIRT! Direct Involvement Recreation Teaching’s (DIRT) focus is
to learn by doing - and to grow.
We are a Central Point based 501©3 non-profit that provides education
through recreation! We have transformed a one hundred year old parking lot in
a back alley of downtown Central Point to a beautiful and productive outdoor
learning center for the community.
It was in this alleyway in the summer of 2014 that our first program launched,
with 19 students. We built the park from nothing. The children and teachers were
excited to build this garden, and spent days moving the soil into the many beds,
planting the seeds, and tending to
the vegetable garden. We learned
about
other
outdoor
and
recreational aspects as well:
rainwater systems, bee and bat
pollination, sediment movement, soil
and composting, along with
exploration in geometry, friction and
motion through free-play.
The fall season brought us the
first annual Block Party at the DIRT
Park. This community event had
children’s carnival games, a silent
auction, a trolley and two fire
engines. We were able to raise
awareness about our DIRT Park, as
well as funds to carry on our free
programs through the winter months
in an indoor facility. The outpour of
community support for this DIRT
T
movement -a reconnection to the soil- was incredible. We had over 200 attendees
and many sponsors, partners, and pals show up to this event.
We are currently offering a free art program with guided lessons on selfportraits. We also encourage participants to explore with acrylic and water color
painting during this program. We have many fun, exciting and diverse programs
throughout the year. Please check our web page, mydirtpark.org, for upcoming
program registration and descriptions. Join us Feb. 15th to learn about Bees
and March 8th to make Seeds in a ball from 1-2pm at 650 E. Pine St. Central
Point. The natural side-effect of the DIRT tends to be twofold – strengthening
our community through participation, and beautifying our surroundings. These
acts are changing our climate- we are being the change we wish to see!

Planting Seeds and Watching
Them Grow
By Michelle Wilson, Development Director, Therapist at the Children’s Advocacy Center of Jackson County
oon after Valentine’s Day,
right after all of the red
and white bows and
hearts start to come off
of the shelves, little signs of the coming of spring
start to poke their heads out around us. Stores
start selling packets of seeds to plant, in
preparation for the warmer days to come
and the anticipation of summer flowers and
garden vegetables.
This is a great time of year to plan
positive family time together. You can start
with a handful of tiny seeds sown in dirtfilled paper cups set in a kitchen window.
Even very young children can help with
choosing the types of flowers to grow or the
varieties of vegetables to grace the table later in
the year. Choose soil that is as rich with nutrients as
possible to give the young seeds a good start, and read
the seed package directions for information on what they
need in the way of sun and water. When the first green sprouts start
to pop up through the soil, children and adults alike can’t help but get excited
about the magic that is happening right in the kitchen window. This is good time
to either choose a good spot in the yard to transplant those seeds into a small
garden or to pick out some clay pots (which you can paint yourself to add another
creative step to the process) to hold the young plants as they grow and blossom.
When the flowers and vegetables start to come into full bloom, everyone in
the family can celebrate the accomplishment of growing something together.
Cutting fresh flowers and bringing them into the house is a great way to bring
simple beauty into each day, and even kids who don’t normally like to eat their
S
vegetables can’t help but try them when they have grown them
from seedlings! Once you start growing things, it can
become an annual event, much like celebrating holidays
or birthdays, only this event can last from late winter
when you buy those first seed packets until late in
the fall when you harvest the last vegetables
before the cold weather really hits.
Simple activities that focus on beauty,
nature, and good food are often the best ways
to spend quality together as a family. As we
watch tiny seeds grow into small seedlings —
then blooms — then into full blossom, we can
be reminded to pay attention to the ways our
children are growing each day. We can
remember to nurture them with everything they
need and never take them for granted. And we
can celebrate each day with them, teaching them the
natural rhythms of nature and of strong, healthy family
life.

Materials
Milk (almond or cow work best)
Q-tips or toothpicks
Food Coloring
Watercolor paper or thick construction paper cut to the size of the tray/dish
Dish soap (optional)
Tray/Shallow Dish
Instructions
Pour enough milk into the tray to cover the bottom. This is roughly 1/4 cup.
Add drops of food coloring to the milk.
Use a Q-tip or toothpick to begin swirling the colors. Children enjoy
adding the colors and watching them swirl. This is a great time to talk about
what they see such as colors they have created, waves, swirls etc. Add more
drops of food coloring or a few drops of dish soap to see what happens.
To make the print, take one sheet of paper and lay it on top of the milk
mixture. Gently press down. Gently lift it, set aside to dry (cookie sheets work
well) and continue with additional sheets.
Let everything dry completely before framing, or cutting into fun shapes
and greeting cards.

Communication Disorders:
Do You Know the Signs?
by DeNell Gallagher, MS, CCC-SLP; More Than Words Speech Therapy, LLC
C
ommunication disorders are on the rise.
Between 2001 and 2011, speech disorders have
increased by 63%. The nationwide launch of the
new public awareness campaign Identify the Signs
by the American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association (ASHA), encourages parents,
caregivers, and others to educate themselves about
the early warning signs of speech and language
disorders. The campaign stems from ASHA’s new
findings that identify lack of awareness of the early
warning signs as the leading barrier to early
detection and treatment.
Results of a recent survey of ASHA’s
membership showed that 45% of expert
respondents reported lack of awareness as the
number one barrier to early detection of
communication disorders. Research has shown that
early detection is critical to treating—and
oftentimes reversing—communication disorders.
Delayed treatment can result in isolation, poor
academic skills, and delayed development.
Signs of a Language Disorder
• Says only a few words (12-18 months)
• Words are not easily understood
(18 months-2 years)
• Does not put words together to make sentences
(1.5-3 years)
• Has trouble playing and talking with
other children (2-3 years)
areas: production of speech sounds, grammar,
vocabulary, and social language. Results of a
screening will show typical development, the need
to monitor development, or a recommendation
for further evaluation.

communication
disorder,

Children: Signs of a Speech Sound Disorder
• Says p, b, m, h, and w incorrectly in words (1-2 years)
• Says k, g, f, t, d, and n incorrectly in words
(2-3 years)
• Produces speech that is unclear, even to familiar people (2-3 years)
• Children: Signs of Stuttering (Disfluency)
• Repeats first sounds of words, or prolongs (holds out) sounds (2.5-3 years)
• Pauses a lot while talking (2.5-3 years)
• A screening is the best way to determine if your child is at risk for a
communication disorder. You and your child will meet with a Speech Language
Pathologist (SLP) for 10-20 minutes. The screening will include the following

ooking for something new for your canine companion? Consider
hydrotherapy and massage provided by local dog lover, Debbie Erb, at
Pawsitive Touch for Dogs.
Massage alone has been known for many years to have a positive effect on
the body, whether it is human or dog, but hydrotherapy brings things to a new
level. Hydrotherapy uses water to create relaxing yet fun atmosphere, which
includes an underwater treadmill. The underwater treadmill is designed for
canine rehabilitation and allows dogs to begin their rehabilitation process earlier
than normal. Using the natural buoyancy and resistance of the soothing warm
water, the underwater treadmill creates a low-impact workout that helps the
animal to increase muscle strength and endurance allowing a quicker transition
to land-base therapy.
However, this is not just for dogs recovering from injury or surgery. Dogs
who suffer from old age or arthritis can also greatly benefit from the comforting
warm water and the ability to be able to exercise without the increased pain of
their own body weight. Healthy canines have room to benefit as well because
this provides a way to build and strengthen muscle without causing damage to
joints over time from impact.
Benefits from Treatment Include:
• Early intervention and rehabilitation
• Possibility for quicker recovery time
• Exercise for dogs of all ages
and sizes
• Helps maintain a healthy weight
• Better mental health/ increased
endorphin levels
Debbie purchased her hydrotherapy tank in 2008, but has been
working with dogs for many years as
a massage therapist at dog agility
competitions. Having a true passion
for animals, Debbie provides
genuine care and relief for many
dogs through the use of her tank as
well as massage. Each animal is
treated in the best way possible and
water level is adjusted to meet every dogs specific needs.
If you have been looking for another healing option for your dog, or even just an
outlet of fun then give Debbie at Pawsitive Touch for Dogs a call today!

THE ONLY SPORT WHERE NOBODY SITS ON THE BENCH
ny Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday night you will find kids and adults
warming up to compete in one of the fastest sports. You will find these
athletes at River City BMX’s outdoor or indoor tracks. The youngest
riders are 1 1/2 years old with the oldest being 58 years old. BMX racing is a
sport where kids and parents can compete together, it is a family sport. Ages 1
1/2-5 years ride peddle-less bikes, using their feet to power down the track and
up the hills. These bikes teach the youngest to balance so it is an easier transition
to peddle bikes. As soon as children can ride a 2 wheeler they are ready for the
full track experience!!
BMX racing now offers many opportunities for children including scholarships,
national titles, and the Olympics. Many of our riders earned state championship
plates in 2014. We, also, have 4 #1 district title holders from our track. With
BMX you choose how much you want to participate and how often. River City
BMX is ran entirely by volunteers and we love any help families offer us.
Our racing schedule is:
Tuesday @ the outdoor track, registration 5:30-6:30pm.
Thursday @ the indoor track, registration 5:30-6:30pm
Saturday @ the outdoor track registration 2:30-3:30pm, @ the indoor track
registration 5:30-6:30pm
Outdoor track is located at 1380 Pansy Lane in Grants Pass
Indoor track is located at the Josephine County Fairgrounds, cow barn in Grants
Pass.
USABMX offers first time riders a free 1-day trial to help families decide if
racing is for them. After that there is a yearly membership to pay and race fees
for each time there is a race. Requirements for racing are: long sleeves, pants,
and a helmet. And, of course, the need to go fast!! For more information please
visit our facebook page, River City BMX or call 541-471-0269.

7 Steps to Resolving Conflicts
Commission for Children and Families
Talk about the events that led to the conflict. What
happened first? Second? What escalated the conflict?
2
3
Name how you feel. Ask other involved to identify how
they feel. Encourage people to be honest about how they
feel without blaming others.
Quick tip:
Give Children the power to
solve their own conflicts.
Listen carefully to each person’s feelings and accounts of
the conflict. Use empathy skills. Try to understand each
person’s point of view.
4
“
hildren who learn how to think about their relationships
with other people do better in life in general,” says
Myrna B. Shure, Ph.D., a developmental psychologist. Shure
created the I Can Problem Solve (ICPS) program which
focuses on the thinking skills needed for young people to
resolve conflicts peacefully.
C
Shure suggests before young people begin discussing a specific
conflict that they find out if the time and place are good for
the discussion. If so, they can begin the seven step process. If
not, they should identify a time and place that work for
everyone involved. Then:
Identify the conflict. Have each person talk about what
happened. Each person’s account is equally important.
1
Brainstorm solutions. Be creative. Affirm each person’s
ideas but keep encouraging people to think of different
solutions.
5
Evaluate each solution. Choose one solution that
everyone agrees on.
6
7
Monitor how the solution works. If something needs to
change, start again.
If children can learn to solve typical everyday problems, they
are less likely to become impulsive, insensitive, withdrawn,
aggressive or antisocial. Shure says “In the long run it is
important for children to learn how to think about the
problems they encounter in their dealings with other people.”

Wanted: Jackson County Master Recyclers
Youth & Parents Welcome!
www.jcmasterrecyclers.org • 541-494-5488
ecome a Master
Recycler in 2015!
Jackson
County
Recycling Partnership is
now seeking residents to
take part in the annual
training course and
volunteer service program.
Participants gain a broad
understanding of home
waste prevention strategies, the local solid waste
infrastructure, hazardous
waste avoidance, composting, plastics, e-waste and
much more.
What better way to
teach young children to
recycle than if their older
siblings and adults are
positive role models.
Enthusiastic
young
people are welcome to become Master Recyclers. Ages 12-15 must be
accompanied by an adult during class and volunteer service. Students ages
16+ who are responsible go-getter types and have transportation may
enroll without an adult, with permission from a parent or guardian.
The annual course offers and an extensive training manual,
discussion-based classes, presentations from regional experts, and
field trips to the regional landfill, waste-to-energy plant, and
composting facilities. To complete the training, Master Recyclers
complete 40 service hours in their neighborhoods, schools and
workplaces, and support countywide waste prevention projects, over

W
orried about your kids using alcohol, tobacco and other drugs? Most
parents are, so they talk to their kids about those risky behaviors because
that’s one of the things that research tells us works for prevention.
However, you may not have discussed another risky behavior that more and more
kids are engaging in—-gambling—-in fact, they have probably heard nothing in school
or elsewhere about the potential risks.
Kids are exposed to gambling every day by simply turning on the TV to see poker
tournaments or seeing people buying lottery tickets—-sometimes even buying them
for youth. Adults usually don’t recognize it as a risk or realize it is illegal. Even
churches and schools often use gambling for fund-raising so the gambling message is
everywhere and is becoming a social norm. People are often surprised about the
types of activities that are categorized as gambling as it is typically thought of as
betting something of risk on an unknown outcome. Although the types of gambling
among youth varied, the top three identified were free internet games, card games
and sports betting; all of which have some element of personal skill which often
makes it difficult for some people to accept as a gambling behavior. The ‘free’ internet
games and gaming systems pose a growing concern as the behavior and
consequences are very similar to gambling. Other examples are raffles, 50/50 sales
or ‘friendly wagers’ on sports or other events.
As responsible parents you can give your kids the full story about gambling by
accessing Oregon’s informative websites which have resources that are pertinent to
both youth and adults: preventionlane.org and 1877mylimit.org. School surveys of
local youth in eighth and eleventh grades revealed that almost 49% of eighth graders
gamble and almost 46% of eleventh graders gamble.
Oregon is a leader in the field of gambling addiction treatment and prevention.
