CASTLEMANÍA ¤ 7 EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW After the feast held by ABC for the Television Critics Association, our dear Susan Sullivan, who plays the role of Martha Rodgers, took a little time for a few questions in a very interesting interview. The interview is property of Assignmentx. To read other interviews you can do it in your website. ASSIGNMENT X: Going forward, do you know what you’d like to see happen with the rest of this season of CASTLE? Susan Sullivan: I’m hoping they bring James Brolin back, for God’s sake. That would be fun. ASSIGNMENT X: Were you pleased to find out that’s who Castle’s was played by? Susan Sullivan: Yeah. He’s an attractive guy. And he’s tall. You can look up. We women need to look up at a certain point. It’s a better angle. ASSIGNMENT X: So do you have a favorite episode or scene in what we’ve seen until now? Do you like it when Martha gets to do her theatrical stuff and get into costume? Susan Sullivan: Yeah, I like that. I’d like Martha to write a book. I’d like Martha to sort of impact aging women with a sense of possibility and how it feels to feel marginalized and trying to stay in the game. That’s always what interested me about the character. So when those kinds of scenes come up, I like it. I’d like her to dance wildly around the house, because that’s how you get out of depression. I liked the Chet 8 ¤ CASTLEMANÍA ASSIGNMENT X: In the last couple of seasons, Martha’s had some episodes where she’s really been afraid that either Castle or Alexis is going to die – Alexis got kidnapped, Castle almost succumbed to a virus. Since Martha is not inherently a worrier, is it difficult doing those scenes without throwing her completely out of character whack? Susan Sullivan: You know, the character is used as she is needed in terms of the scripts. So sometimes she’s really wise and direct and smart; sometimes she’s completely stupid and off the wall. So she’s a little bit of everything. But the truth is that we’re filled with contradictions as human beings. So I think for the most part, I can make those scenes work, because I believe that we are very multi-dimensional. ASSIGNMENT X: Do you feel motherly towards Nathan Fillion, since he plays your son? Susan Sullivan: Yes, I do. I do. In fact, during the break, while he was in Bora Bora, or some exotic place, I had dinner with his mother Cookie, and I know him a little better now. ASSIGNMENT X: Have you enjoyed seeing Molly Quinn grow up on the show as Martha’s granddaughter over the years you’ve been doing it? Susan Sullivan: I love Molly Quinn. We did a play together. We did KINDERTRANSPORT at L.A. TheatreWorks, and she really is a ASSIGNMENT X: The actual Kindertransport was to get Jewish children out of Germany before the outbreak of World War II. Can you describe the play KINDERTRANSPORT? Susan Sullivan: It’s a very kind of involved piece, because it goes back and forth in time, but it’s obviously about the kids who were sent from their parents in Germany, right before the break of the Second World War, to live in England, and about what happened to them, what happened to these kids who were suddenly left without parents and living with strangers and in a strange country. It’s a fascinating play. [Quinn] played my daughter. And I played the daughter of Jane Kaczmarek. So it was back and forth in time betweenGermany andEngland and the present and the past. We did it as a radio play. I was surprised. I didn’t know if it would work. It was kind of confusing to read, but to play it – the audiences were very enthused. ASSIGNMENT X: What else do you have going on right now? Susan Sullivan: You have two CASTLE-heads here. Seamus [Dever, who plays CASTLE’s Detective Kevin Ryan] and I are doing charity lunches. We have two lined up. Fundraisers. We’re both in the same companies – the Antaeus Theatre Company and L.A. TheatreWorks. ASSIGNMENT X: So people pay money to have lunch with the two of you to benefit the theatre groups? Susan Sullivan: Yes. It is amazing. I find it interesting to see who these people are. ASSIGNMENT X: Is there anything else you’d like to say about CASTLE right now? Susan Sullivan: It’s a delightful place to be, and it’s great to have a job at this point in life. @KynuChan @KynuChan ASSIGNMENT X: Had you ever imagined anybody in the role of Castle’s dad before it was cast? Susan Sullivan: You know, I gave it some thought. You tend to think of your friends, and I thought of David Selby from FALCON CREST, or Bob Foxworth, or that kind of thing, just because you have a history with an actor and it sort of informs the part and the relationship. But it’s always fun to meet somebody new. thing [when Martha almost got married]; I liked the relationship. Having a relationship was kind of nice. wonderful actress. She’s going to be better and better. She needs to be messier. She’s a little too perfect. But she’ll get there. She’s just delightful. CASTLEMANÍA ¤ 9 Finally! Our dear couple have already Picked a day for their wedding and they’re getting married in September, but it’s still unclear if there’s going to be a temporal jump or... they’re confirming a renovation for another season. At the beginning, when choosing a date was an horror due to climate differences, labors issues, etc. Martha suggests the possibility of having a ‘rushed wedding’, in which they’d just go to city hall and put an end to that unbearable moment... but it’s well known this Caskett wedding has to stand out, as both fans and protagonist want it like that. Point and end? SPOILER ALERT! Possible... wedding dress? “Aún sin titular para la Sexta Temporada muchos son los que se han aventurado a ponerle título”. 10 ¤ CASTLEMANÍA Will they roll out the red carpet for their wedding? Or... Will it be interrupted by some old unfinished business? @KynuChan @KynuChan After a difficult case, in which Castle’s Father is involved, Castle surprises us when he tells Beckett they’re getting married in September as she suggested earlier in the episode. CASTLEMANÍA ¤ 11 Stana Katic “My Beauty Story” Stana Katic appears in a new commercial for the “My Beauty Story” campaign from Olay, which together with “Elle Magazine” give us a brief definition of what beauty means to her. What is her “Story”? “What makes a woman beautiful is a glow from the inside. As I grow older I add elements, regiments, things that encourage that glow. Getting out into nature, laughing a lot, oxygen, and breathing the air is so important for healthy skin. 12 ¤ CASTLEMANÍA “I’m a big nerd. I’m a big dork. Beauty comes from an internal space before anything else. And that’s the beginning of it. And then, for me personally, as I grew older, of course, I added little elements; regiments. Getting out into nature as much as possible. Getting oxygen. Of course, skin, taking care of skin and so on. That just adds to it, but it has to start from the inside and it rises up like a wonderful volcano, and it just like “pshhhhh” explodes. My personal beauty story is laughing a lot”. @KynuChan @KynuChan If I start with skin that looks great, my make up is going to look great, and everything else will follow”. CASTLEMANÍA ¤ 13 Nathan Fillion co-funded the “Kids Need To Read” ‘Kids Need to Read’ was founded as a nonprofit corporation in 2008 by PJ Haarsma, Denise Gary, and Nathan Fillion. It was awarded 501 tax exempt status in September on 2012. The mission of the foundation was based on the work of a 2007 project of the same name. Traveling from school to school in 2006 to promote the first book in his young adult science fiction series, Haarsma repeatedly encountered kids who were hungry to read, and teachers who were scraping together personal funds to purchase books for their students. KNTR Co-founder and Executive Director Denise GaryAs children followed Haarsma out to the parking lot begging for books, the novice author was heartbroken. What had happened to school budgets that resulted in a dearth of books in school libraries? What could be done to combat this indifference? The idea for Kids Need to Read was born. Haarsma collaborated with his friend, Nathan Fillion, star of Firefly, Serenity, Desperate Housewives, and Castle, to form the idea into a project. He then enlisted the help of Denise Gary, head of NathanNation, a guerilla marketing group organized to promote Fillion’s movies and television programs. NathanNation: Kindness is a Strength Logo The group’s motto was Kindness is a Strength, taken from a longer Fillion quote, and they were happy to join in the cause of childhood literacy with Haarsma and Fillion. At the end of 2007, Haarsma gave his blessing to Gary to organize the project into a nonprofit foundation. With the help of Debbie Brown and Kristen Klein, Gary began laying the groundwork for the creation of a federally recognized charity that would work to improve the lives of children by bringing literacy back to the forefront of the United States education system. The foundation was legally set up in January of 2008, incorporated as a nonprofit the following May, and was granted 501 status in September of that same year. NathanNation was Debbie Brown, Kristen Klein, and Denise Garydisbanded and the members that remained became the backbone of Kids Need to Read, often supported by the charitable donations of Nathan Fillion fans and the Browncoats, a community of Firefly and Serenity fans. Haarsma continued to be an active part of the organization, with Fillion contributing his name and autographs to help the fledgling foundation grow. The new organization was given the legal name of The Kids Need to Read Foundation to separate the new nonprofit’s corporate identity from that of the project. The name reverted back to Kids Need to Read after the foundation had firmly established itself two years later. Faith HochhalterChildren’s book buyer Faith Hochhalter was tapped to create a high interest, fiction book list when the nonprofit corporation was forming in 2008. Nonfiction titles and graphic novels were added in 2009. Because the foundation dedicated itself to serving children of all ages, it became the only national literacy organization to regularly provide books to middle readers and adolescents. It began to receive submissions not only from impoverished schools and libraries, but from juvenile offender facilities, urban afterschool programs, special education classes, dropout recovery programs, and other specialized programs for older, illiterate children. Gary soon felt an urgent duty to more specifically address the needs of children living under oppressive conditions. A Literature Advisory Committee was formed in early 2010, chaired by Hochhalter, to assure that each book on the donation list contained relatable subject matter, as well as positive, inspirational outcomes. Today, the growing book list contains over 350 titles. Books are carefully selected from that list according to the specific needs of each literacy program the foundation assists, with the goal of transforming lives. Evolving from a small project giving out one title to each recipient and quickly transforming into a nonprofit foundation providing thousands of books to literacy programs desperate for reading material, Kids Need to Read persists in helping kids discover the joy of reading, while also providing books that encourage a profound sense of self-respect and social responsibility. Knowing that the specter of illiteracy continues to haunt our nation, particularly among disadvantaged citizens, the foundation’s staff and board of directors are dedicated to opening up a world of endless possibilities to children through literacy. “Growing up, my parents managed to show me the importance of reading without cramming it down my throat. A difficult task, I’m sure. It breaks my heart to think that there are kids out there, ready to have their imaginations lit on fire, excited and wanting to read, and facing naked shelves in their school or local libraries. Rather than complain or wait till the system stops failing our nation’s children, this is a matter I feel we must take into our own hands. There are children, right now, waiting—wanting to read. What shall we tell them?” - Nathan Fillion @KynuChan @KynuChan KNTR Geek Prom at Phoenix Comicon, presented by Bookmans 2010James Blasingame, Denise Gary, and PJ Haarsma at KNTR HIKRZ Jamboree, presented by GoDaddy.com 2010 No one could have predicted the crash in the economy that came in tandem with the organization’s founding. The need for assistance from Kids Need to Read’s program immediately compounded. To help speed up the foundation’s growth, Gary made the decision to shift the organization from an online charity dependent exclusively upon donations and auction earnings, to a physical entity capable of conducting community fundraising events. Sensing that Phoenix, Arizona would give the foundation its best chance of survival, Gary moved from Texas to Arizona in January of 2009. The Phoenix area had exhibited an unusually high level of support for the organization, due in part to the local popularity of Haarsma, as well as a strong awareness of a decline in children’s literacy within the area. The move proved to be fortuitous not only for excellent community participation, but because of fruitful partnerships with Phoenix Comicon, Bookmans Entertainment Exchange, Changing Hands Bookstore, and Phoenix Book Company. Significant physical donations from Komikwerks, LLC. and Highlights for Children, Inc. also gave the organization an early boost.
