Public Notice
Annual Valve Operating Program
The City of Orillia Environmental Services Department will be conducting
the annual valve operating program over the next few months. This
involves locating and operating watermain valves within the City’s
water distribution system. This preventive maintenance measure is
necessary to ensure that valves are operational and functional in the
event of a failure for isolation purposes.
Advance notice to the public concerning exact work location and
schedule cannot feasibly be provided. During the operating procedure,
poor pressure and/or “red” water may result. This situation is
temporary. The discoloured water is not hazardous but, if detected,
the public is requested to simply open their cold water taps in order
to clear the system.
For more information, please call the Environmental Services
Department at 705-329-7249.

Retail Business Holidays Act
Under the Retail Business Holidays Act, the City of Orillia has a by-law
that allows smaller businesses to be open on all statutory holidays except
Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
Larger stores that have 2,400 square feet of retail space or more and
employing four or more employees are not covered under the general
by-law and must make a separate application to the City. A number of
larger businesses have done this. The process takes a minimum of sixty
(60) days and includes submitting an application to Council, with a $79
fee, a Public Meeting with thirty (30) days public notice, the consideration
of a by-law and, if passed, a thirty-day appeal period.
If you are the owner or operator of a larger store and require further
information, please contact Janet Nyhof, Deputy Clerk at the Orillia City
Centre at 705-325-2108.
