FROM THE PRESIDENT
Welcome to 2015 and I trust your golf scores improve over the year!
I am happy to report that Gordon Golf Club is operating profitably and our membership is stable and
growing. Justin has commenced on the project to move the Poker machines to the deck giving us more
room in the clubhouse and allowing the poker machines to cater for both non smokers and smokers.
Hopefully this project will be completed before Easter.
We are waiting on Ku-ring-gai Councils’ report following the open sessions on the future of our beloved
golf course. As soon as any news is available we will share this with our Members.
Peter Criss and Justin keep in close contact with the course maintenance staff to ensure our golf course
is maintained in an optimal condition. With the introduction of “Preferred Lie on the Mown Portion only”
our competition scores have been more even. When in the rough the ball must be played as it lies - interesting to hear the colourful language when the ball is in a nasty position. However, overall the change
has been well received.
Our Major Pennant team started the season off with a draw in the first round match against Riverside
Oakes. Well done to the team and keep our club proud! The Mixed Pennant Team have also been representing the club and enjoying playing as a team. Well done also!
On a personal note, for the first time in my golfing life I have been taking golf lessons thanks to a birthday present from my wonderful wife Carol. Many of you may know I have a natural slice with my shots
over the trees and then back on the fairway. Matt Criss has the dubious task of taking me for my first lesson where I was requested to hit the ball so he could see the reason for the continued slice. Once he
caught his breath and picked himself up from the floor Matt proceeded to change my setup, swing, follow
though and arm and head positioning. In fact every element of my swing has changed. I now aim the ball
down the middle of the fairway, not at trees and the ball is going relatively straight. I have shocked my
playing partners by increasing my length by at least 20 meters with more to come. Thank you Matt and I
strongly recommend any golfer to see Matt if the ball is not going where they want it to. Matt is very patient and extremely knowledgeable.
Unfortunately due to an interstate move, Graeme Hill has resigned from the Board. We thank Graeme
for all his efforts. At last nights Board Meeting, the Board appointed David Linnert to the vacant position.
We welcome David and look forward to his valuable input.
Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday 25th March at 6:00pm and hope to see many of
you there.

PENNANT REPORTS
MAJOR PENNANT (Report from Frank Gurren, Manager)
The 2015 Major Pennant Season kicked off on Saturday with Gordon having high hopes of winning a long overdue pennant for the club and returning to Division 4.
We welcomed back into the fold some “more seasoned” faces in the form of John Small and Neil
Warren as well as a new member to the Gordon team in Thomas Meiklejohn. Our opponents for
the round, Riverside Oaks, were an unknown quantity with the potential of having some very low
markers as our competition on the day.
The day progressed well with a majority of our matches being on the positive side of the ledger,
our top order of Phil Waddell, John Small and Duncan Maciver in particular playing well to hold
early leads against their opponents. As expected Riverside fought hard in all matches with 3
matches finishing on the 18th hole, with a couple of others finishing on the 16th & 17th holes. The
end result for the day being a tied match, with 3 ½ points to each team.
This Sunday presents us with the return match at Riverside Oaks, with the team confident of
gaining the away victory which will be required to win our division. Any spectators or caddies are
more than welcome, with the boost given to our team by this support being immeasurable.
MIXED PENNANT (Report from Terry White, Manager)
We headed out to Northbridge to play Woollahra last Sunday a little apprehensive because I had
mixed the team around to try to find new combinations to serve us well into the future. We were
also a little down on confidence because I don’t think anyone enjoys playing at Northbridge and
our team came away with their minds unchanged as it is such a strange course to play. I think it
took us about 1 ¾ hours to get through the first 5 holes with all the waiting on tees to be called
up, tees adjacent to greens and all the noise etc. coming from all directions. It was such a relief
to get away to the 6th tee.
Our team went down 4 1/2 to 1/2 with the half coming from a new No.1 pairing of Trevor Waters
and Bronwen Loveday. They combined really well to have a very close match which went one
way then the other. The veteran pairing of The Dowsing’s unfortunately suffered their first loss
and were seen heading for the car park blaming one another as usual. The other matches were
hard fought but the opposition proved too strong on the day. The other bright note on the day
was when, having my first game back and playing reserve with Lynda Partridge, we had a 2up
win after a close game all the way.
We look forward to playing at Woollahra against Bankstown on Sunday and with more team
changes hopefully end the season with a bang.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Trevor Waters and Peter Scott for their contribution
and support this year. They enjoyed the format of Mixed Pennants and hopefully will be back
next year. Also Pam Catanach and David Ticehurst who helped us out on Sunday and have
been willing participants during the season. I would also like to mention the support of both
THOGERSEN LEGAL and PARTRIDGE REALTY who are our team sponsors. Their contribution is making a huge difference to our team and Gordon Golf Club.
FROM THE LADIES .....
It was lovely to see such an enthusiastic group of lady golfers at our Opening Day Competition. The
event of the day was an Individual and Team (aggregate of 3 scores) Stableford. It was a most enjoyable although somewhat hot day.
Results were:Division 1: Winner: Helen Coon (17) 35pts & R/Up: Margaret Bright (24) 33 points c/b
Division 2: Winner: Kathy Jelbart (37) 37 pts c/b & R/Up: Robyn Bowden (34) 37 points
The winning team was Rita Wills, Mitchie Mullins and June Stanley with 88points.
The R/Up Team was Sandra Davies, Anne Morton and Helen Cummins with 86 points c/b.
The winners of the SUMMER COMPETITION were congratulated and prizes awarded to:Division 1 Winner: Norah Grime with 86 points & Runner up: Sandra Davis with 83 points
Division 2 Winner: Penny Summerfield with 79 points & Runner up: Marie Day with 77 points
The player with the most reduced handicap over the summer season was Sandra Davis whose
handicap was reduced by 4 strokes.
The day ended with Birthday Celebrations for a very young and fit looking June Stanley who turned
80 earlier in the week. A delicious birthday cake, made by Dave, our new chef, was enjoyed by all.
The first major event of the year is the Singles Knockout Competition 2015
This Competition is open to all “FULL PLAYING” and “CATEGORY A” women members. Please put
your names down on the nomination form, plus all three dates, if you are available.
