FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
COUNCIL UPDATE
Over the past month, Ku-Ring-Gai Council have staged a number of community consultations regarding the proposed re-development of a regional park on the existing golf
course. A number of Board members attended these sessions to ensure that what was
being said about the Club was factual, the Club’s point of view about the development of
a park was put forward and to monitor the tone of the discussions that were had.
Over the two session approximately 150 residents attended and their views have been
collected. Notes from the meetings can be found here:
http://www.gordongolfclub.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Communityworkshops-on-a-park-at-GGC.pdf
It would appear that the majority of people in the room over the two meetings would like
to see the Gordon Golf Course remain, at least in some form. The Board continues to
have meetings with the Council to gain clarity of what will actually eventuate, especially
with the rumours which flood the discussion space and continually add new dimensions
to the issue. With every community group lobbying the Council for facilities in the area
(that could be built within a regional park) and others lobbying for no facilities to be built
near them, one thing that is clear is that there is no resolution from Council to this matter
any time soon. Given the Club has tenure to 2023, the Council have a safety net to discuss this over a longer period than it would otherwise.
This being the case, the Club Board will continue to lobby and discuss the matter with all
levels of the Council to ensure its future both in the short and long term. The publicity
and constant rumours have had a serious impact on our trading performance for the
year, a matter that has been raised with Council and is currently under review, with regards to financial relief.
As soon as anything concrete comes to light regarding the future (past 2023) for the Gordon Golf Course, this information will be advised to Members quickly. Unfortunately the
only information the Board gets is rumour and frankly ‘a bunch of maybe’s.’ In the meantime, I hope you continue to enjoy golf in the warm sunshine.

PRESIDENT’S GOLF REPORT
In the past week we had a full special golf calendar. The golf course was prepared to a
high standard and it looked immaculate. The fairways were green and well mown the
trees looked stately and welcoming of stray golf balls and the greens stood out as lush
and green. Some say too lush!
We started the week off with the Century 21 Australian Senior Golf Classic & Pro Am
and we had a full field of both Members and Senior Professionals. What fun it is to see
how these Professional golfers hit the ball long and straight. But sometimes too long and
straight and the trees quickly gobbled up the balls. The amateurs handled themselves
well and with decorum when they played the usual but unexpected bad shot. The Professionals I spoke to really enjoyed the course, company and the organisation. Thanks to
Peter Criss for a very well run event. We managed to win the “2013 Legends Tour Pro
Am of the Year” so well done to Peter Criss, the Pro Shop and the Club.
Then we had the Warren vs Gibson Challenge. Although the course looked magnificent
the wind was playing havoc with the ball. But we all played in the same conditions. I
was surprised at the high level of competition with most matches being decided on the
18th hole. These teams represent our Gordon Golf Club in competition and do a wonderful job being our ambassadors. I strongly recommend that if you want a taste of competition and to be in one of the teams contact the club and they will put you in contact with
the appropriate Captain. This competition ended in a draw and then great discussions
were had about how the players could have reversed their match outcome. It was interesting to hear the player’s rationalisations about the suggested outcome. But, it is still a
draw and that will go on the trophy!
The last match was the Presidents vs Captains teams in conjunction with our annual
Sponsor’s Lunch. The teams were made up of the Ladies Committee, the Boards and
our very generous Sponsors. The greens were not as lush as previous matches and it
was pleasing (from my point of view) to see some of the Captain’s team over hitting
putts. It was a great team event with a lot of cheering for their partners and other team
members. A big thank you to John Surplice who did a very competent job on being the
BBQ Chef for the day. But in the end the President’s team very narrowly beat the Captain’s team 4 matches to 3.
All these events in such a short time frame showed that Club is well organised and Members are willing to assist in the organisation of these events. Thank you to Justin and his
staff for managing the events and always being so courteous.
See you all again next year for these special golf events.

PRESIDENTS V CAPTAINS GOLF CHALLENGE & SPONSORS LUNCH:
Wednesday 19th November
A Presidents vs Captains Golf Challenge
took place on Wednesday. Those invited
to play were Club Sponsors, Board Members, Match Committee, Ladies Committee
and Office Bearers. It was a way for the
Club to thank those Members for all their
contributions and hard work over the year
and enjoy a fun and competitive day of
golf followed by lunch.
The Golf Challenge was a team event between the Presidents and Captains teams
with 7 pairings in each team playing 4 Ball
Stableford Match Play. A point was alloCaptain PETER BAILY hands over the
cated to each winning team and half a point trophy (reluctantly!!) to the President
for a squared match. In a very close conGEOFF WHITE
test the PRESIDENT’S team ending up
winning 4 points to 3. Congratulations to the winning team and a big thank you to all
those who participated and helped make this a great day.
DIGGER’S DAY
Don’t forget that tomorrow is our annual Ex Services (Diggers Day). It’s always a huge
day so if you can find a spot and wish to play, put your name down and come along and
join in the fun. There are some great prizes (both golfing and from our raffle). Raffle tickets are available until the Presentation tomorrow afternoon. Raffle prizes include a great
set of golf club, a golf pack including cap, balls, towel, a $100 Woolworths voucher, dinner vouchers for Mario’s Cucina at North Turramurra and The Cooks Garden at North

FROM THE CAPTAIN (continued)…
WARREN V GIBSON CHALLENGE: SUNDAY 16TH NOVEMBER
BOB BROWN & LAWRIE CULLERTON MEMORIAL TROPHY – SPONSOR PHIL ROBSON
Captains Reports: David Ticehurst (Warren Team) & Steve Sinclair (Gibson Team)
The 18th annual Warren Gibson Challenge match was played last Sunday in somewhat windy
and trying conditions. The friendly banter and laughter had commenced some weeks previously
and continued well after the final presentations and really demonstrated why Gordon is the
friendliest club on the North Shore. There were six matches played and the friendly rivalry,
gamesmanship and spirit displayed in each and every match ensured that this keenly sort trophy
was not given up lightly. THE FINAL RESULT WAS THREE MATCHES EACH, the first “tie” in
the 18 year history of the event. Four of the six were not decided until the 18th green and the
overall result not decided until the last putt of the last match. Whilst there was some very good
golf played by a few, there was some very tardy golf played by most and out of respect to both,
no names are mentioned.
The day concluded over a few ales with Allan Quinn explaining the history of the event and with
the two captains announcing this 2014 MVP’s, Damian Stevens-Jones in Warrens and Matt
Kniepp for the Gibbo’s. From the two captains, a large thank you to all that played in the
Warren and Gibson sides this year and to all that supported the efforts of the teams. We look
forward to having strong support and strong sides in 2015 and if you have any questions about
the competitions, or how to get involved, please speak to someone who played on Sunday.
