June 2015 Newsletter - Riverside Golf Club

July 2015 Newsletter
President’s Report
As most of you are now aware a lot of
trees have disappeared between the 12 th
and 13th fairways. We had a number of
complaints from the one of the developers
in Greenway Close. This reached a climax
last Friday when Frank received an
abusive phone call from the developer.
We have since met with the complainant
and agreed to take action and remove
some of the trees, thus enabling golfers
that slice the ball or in a left hander’s case
hook the ball to be able to aim further left
and away from the houses. This also
allows a better view of the 12th fairway
from the 13th tee and vice versa so you
can see where your ball is heading so as
to sing out fore if it looks like endangering
other golfers. There will also be more on
going work on the 13th fairway over the
next couple of years. I would like to say
thank you to all the people that had input,
especially Michael Swan whose view we
greatly appreciated. Also a big thank you
to Rod Thorpe and his great band of
volunteers who then commenced falling
the trees and cleaning the mess up

Captain’s Report
We had a great pennant break up
afternoon with the grudge matches almost
going to plan, while one player still went
through the pennant season without a win
it was a great afternoon that was played in
great spirit. We will be holding a similar
event to open the pennant season next
year with the aim to get all members along
that are keen to play Pennant in 2016. I’m
already looking forward to next season.

We will now be handicapping all events
that the system uses singles cards to
process scores from, previously the
system would not allow handicapping even
if a single card was used. There will now
be a stableford event created in the back
ground that will be used to process
handicaps. From a members point of view
you just enter the comp that appears on
the screen at sign-in at the pro shop on the
day (same as you do now). You can then
check golflink after presentation on
Saturday afternoons to check for any
handicap adjustments.

Rod certainly has the Golf Club at heart
and is passionate about the state of the
course.
I thought that I would mention that I like the
idea of the fountain near the 18th tee bed, it
will look great once finished. Especially as
a back drop to the 8th green, when
standing on the 8th tee bed, it adds some
character and contrast to the non-playing
section of the course

day. Great feedback on this as well, so
well done to Michael H, Marcus and the
team
You would all agree the garden bed beside
the practise putting green has come up a
treat with its make-over. The club thanks
our generous member for making it all
happen.
Starting in July stableford and Stroke
events will be played off the White tees.
Always check you card before teeing off.
Medal will always be off the Blue markers.
How good is it to see the Trevallyn primary
school kids here on a Wednesday
afternoon, chipping, putting and excited
about the game of golf. Great stuff Michael
S.
Ladies – the course staff have been asked
not put the tee markers all the way back
during winter. While winter can be tough,
we still want everyone to enjoy their golf as
much as possible.
Where ever you can please do your little
bit, i.e. pitch marks, raking of bunkers and
filling in divots.
Well done to the laddies and their pennant
wins during last month.

Caterer’s Report
Mark Poulson
Captain
Hi everyone, as expected June was a
relatively quiet period with the inclusion of
a couple of functions on top of normal club
commitments.
Manager’s Report
Last Sunday the RGC hosted the northern
pennant finals and the club received some
great compliments about the course. Well
done to Sam and the team and our hard
working volunteers:
Numbers have been solid in the bistro now
with the subtle changes on the menu. We
do have a busy period in July with some 8
functions booked during that period.
Don’t forget pot & parmi nights on
Wednesdays 4.30-6.30, dine in or take
away available. Also full take away pizza
menu is still available on Wednesday
evenings.
Rod Thorpe, Glenn Cash , Wayne
Thomas, John Osborne, Simon Crimeen,
Brett Fazackerley, Ian Main, Bruce
Church, Ross Allison (fancy Melbourne
beating Geelong) , Barry Philp, Peter
Temby, Tony and Di Wilson, to mention
just a few. And to John Stoianou for his
flexibility with Simon and use of the vans.
One final note directed to ladies lunch on
Tuesday the 21st of July. I will be away for
2 days returning late morning on that day.
Lunch will be available, all be it a
condensed menu of soup, sandwiches,
wraps & toasted sandwiches. Please
forgive me. Other than that, all's well.
Happy golfing, talk to you next month,
cheers Mick
Also thank you to Dallas Holland for the
use of the marquee on the day of the
pennant finals. And a great effort by our
president and captain who manned the
barbecue, (mind you, the captain didn’t do
much).

Caterer
To top it all off, we had 144

New garden around putting green is a big
improvement around the clubhouse and
this area will be gradually tidied up and
should require little maintenance from
course staff.

Themed Dinner on Saturday August
Keep this date free with a 3 course “Master
Chef” meal with matching wines.
June has been a fairly disappointing month
with very cold wet and frosty conditions, all
of which affected our competitions. Playing
numbers on two out the four days were
seriously depleted with only the intrepid
golfers venturing out in wet, windy
weather. Many of the veterans have
already departed or are planning to leave
for warmer parts in July, escaping from
what is shaping up to be a long winter.
$120 per head all inclusive. Numbers are
limited so please make up a table and
book early. Bookings are essential.
Clubhouse renovations fundraiser.
This will be in the form of a community
“CAR PARK SALE” on Sunday 20/9/2016.
Despite the conditions the course is in
great shape, and holding up very well,
thanks to the efforts of the staff and
volunteers who are working very hard on
improving the course for the members.
We are asking all members if they have
any unwanted items at home to please
donate to this event.
Please speak to myself or to office staff or
through a relevant committee. We are
arranging storage for any items before the
Saturday 19/09/2016 set-up date.
Congratulations
to Lawson
Males for
winning the June Monthly Medal with a net
67 and to Brian McRedmond for taking
out the January - June Consistency Award.
This is the last award to be presented as it
will be replaced in future by the Veterans
Order of Merit.
It is suggested that we will have a
members-only private showing on the
Saturday night IN the clubhouse with
members having the first option to
purchase any items “IN ADVANCE”. More
on this option in the next newsletter.

President
We would like to letter box drop the area,
so if any member can help distribute these
flyers could they please let the office know.
This function has the potential to raise a
substantial amount of money from the
community which will be spent on the new
clubhouse toilets, chairs, tables and a
needed upgrade of the dining area.

I recently spent 4 days in the Hunter Valley
for the Australian Turf grass Conference
and Trade Exhibition. It really was an
insightful and worthwhile trip not only from
the information I took in from the many
seminars I attended but also the many
contacts I made in the industry which will
be beneficial to Riverside in the future.
One of the seminars in particular which
related to my situation was “learning to live
with Poa Annua” which is commonly
known as wintergrass. As you all know we
have a massive abundance of POA but I
can tell you we definitely aren’t the only
ones!!
Tips from the Pro
Here is a simple yet often confused tip for
avoiding trouble from the tee.
With the recent changes to our 13th hole,
and in an effort to avoid balls hitting the
houses to the right, try this.
Set yourself up on the tee so you are able
to hit away from the trouble.
To do this you need to tee the ball up on
the side of the tee bed closest to the
trouble. (ie the right hand side of the 13th
tee bed). Thanks to Thorpy and his merry
band of tree loppers, this is now made
much easier.
Sam O’Keefe
Course Superintendent
Set up on the right hand side, aim down
what was once the left hand side tree line
and let your natural fade and the prevailing
wind drift your ball back to the middle of
the fairway.
Ladies Golf Report
Monthly medal winner was Kate Collings
(76) and Master Putter was Yvonne

off, just in case you drag one left. Good

PENNANT Division 2 defeated Thirlstane
4-1 in the State semi-final but lost to
Claremont 3-2 in the final at Royal Hobart
Golf course. They defeated Thirlstane 4-1
at Mowbray to win the Watterson Shield.

Course Report
Team members included Rose Searle
(Captain), Alison Smart, Alison Henty,
Pauline Pearson, Carolyn Welch (pictures
below) and emergencies Margaret Bond
and Joan Simmonds.
Winter has well and truly arrived with all
guns blazing that’s for sure! The first two
weeks of June have been the coldest start
to winter in recent memory with an
abundance of severe frosts, cold southerly
winds, and many days struggling to reach
double figures. The odd frost here and
there is fine but when we get so many in a
row it starts to become a real pain as we
can’t get on the course till after 10.
Fortunately we haven’t had the usual June
rain we are used to so the course is
currently in fantastic condition. And
according to all weather sites, we are
currently in an El Nino weather pattern so
well below average rainfall is predicted for
the rest of winter and well into spring.
Division 3 were defeated by Claremont in
the semi-final at Royal Hobart; however
won the Conroy Shield at Mowbray 3-2.
Team members included:
Dorothy Runciman (Captain), Astrid
Claase, Pat Westlake, Christine Wadley,
Betty Piesse and Lyn Richardson.
Emergencies were Frances Hudson, and
Marj Colvill.
A successful pennant dinner was held at
the Riverside Golf Club on 26th June where
the four captains were thanked and given
5
flowers in appreciation of their work during
the pennant season. Photos below are
players from Divisions 1, 3 and 4.
Amanda Smith particularly enjoyed the day
with a score of 38 stableford points.
