This was a very successful ceremony and we would like to thank our Maori community and families who were able to come along and support this event. Thank you to the parents who took the opportunity to come along to our ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening last night, it was great to see so many enthusiastic families here – your support is very much appreciated. We look forward to meeting all our new school families as the year progresses. Students who are interested in learning a musical instrument this year are invited to come along to an information evening with their parents. This is being held tonight at 7.00pm in the school hall. Thur 12th Feb Music Info Evening Students have been busy applying for various leadership roles within the school, including Student Executive, for 2015. This role is open to all Year 8s who want to apply. Interested students have presented a speech in Team Time outlining what they can offer as student representatives and role models. Selected students will then present their speech again in front of the school at assembly this Friday and will be followed by student voting. The results will be announced early next week. All classes have rotated around the technology classes and are excited about the opportunity to start some hands-on learning in Art, Food, Hard Materials and Science. This Technology Programme is unique to intermediate schools, and provides students with an opportunity to learn life-long skills in a fun environment. It has been great to see our students busy and engaged in their learning when I have visited the classrooms and I look forward to watching their progress as the term goes on. Japan Exchange Information Every year our school is one of a number in the Waikato area which hosts visiting students from Japan when they stay in New Zealand in March. The exchange between the two schools has been an annual event for many years, and our Year 8 students will have the opportunity to travel to Mukuhari, Japan, in September. This is an excellent opportunity to take part in a cultural exchange and for your child to make friends with a student from a very different culture to our own. Families who host are given a hosting grant and there should be no siginificant cost to any family taking the opportunity to host a child. Thanks to the families who have already offered to host a Japanese Student, your support is very much appreciated. We still require a few more host families; spare information forms are available at the office. Year 8 students who are considering applying to go to Japan in September need to pick up a notice from the office and apply in writing to Mr Leith. This trip costs $3,500 and the first deposit of $200 (non-‐ refundable) is due on 6th March. Students will also have the opportunity to travel to Samoa later in the year, more information will be available closer to the time.
