Parish Notes
What’s Happening?
The Lenten Season. Wednesday February 18 is Ash
Wednesday. In the Catholic Church the imposition of ashes represents penance and humility. The placing of ashes
on the forehead is based upon the Old Testament notion
of marking the forehead as a sign of belonging. Catholics
are marked with ashes in the form of the cross as a sign of
belonging to Christ.
The Lenten season is a special time of prayer and re-
Taking a Good Look
I can’t remember all of the times I have searched for
something around my house that I had put in a very safe
place. It was so safe, that I, myself had forgotten where it
was hidden. I look high and low and, more often than
not, end up invoking the intercession of St. Anthony, patron saint of lost articles.

flection and a time for penitential practices. Penitential
practices are a means to acquire “mastery over instincts
and freedom of heart” as indicated in the Catechism of the
Catholic Church (#2043). Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of total fast and abstinence. The other Friday’s of Lent are a time of abstinence from meat. Lent
runs from Ash Wednesday until the Mass of the Last Supper on Holy Thursday, at which time, we are encouraged
to enter into the Triduum fast beginning on Good Friday
until the time of the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night.
The laws of fasting bind a person from the day after their
18th birthday until the day after their 59th birthday. Fasting
permits one full meal per day and two smaller meals that
do not equal the quantity of the main meal.
The law of abstinence binds a person from the day after their 14th birthday throughout life. The law of abstinence forbids the use of meat on Ash Wednesday, Good
Friday and the Friday’s of Lent. You may eat eggs, products made from milk, condiments made from animal fat
and soups flavored with meat, meat gravy and sauces, so
long as these do not contain meat.
This can translate to when I am lost. I
don’t mean physically lost, but spiritually. I look around and see so many people who are spiritually lost who don’t
even know it. This is why I’m excited
that our theme this Lent is “Finding God
in Lent.” How often do we neglect to
look for God and when we do, how often
are we look in all of the wrong
places?
Fr. Bill has invited Fr. Leo Patalinghug (remember the
cooking priest from “Spice Up Your Marriage”?) to give
us our Lenten Mission. Fr. Leo is going to present to us
ways for us to find God this Lent, so SAVE THE
DATES! March 22-24, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. If you need
children’s ministry, you MUST register on the parish
website: www.livoniastmichael.org.
Speaking of Lent, I am including a little exercise that
my family and I do every year on the Sunday before Ash
Wednesday (that’s today!). We sit down and make our
commitment about the three Lenten disciplines of prayer
(what will I do to pray more?), fasting (what behavior or
thing will I give up?), and almsgiving (what gift of money
or time will I do this Lent?). We then post it on the refrigerator for all to see. We include a family commitment,
which we do together, for each discipline. So, take a good
look around this Lent and find God!
Stations of the Cross. As a way to more fully enter into
the spirituality of the Lenten season I invite you to participate in the prayer of the Stations of the Cross. Each Friday
during Lent we will prayerfully recall the Lord’s passion.
I encourage parents in particular to bring their children, so
that united as a family of faith, we might give praise to
God as we recall Jesus’ gift of himself for our salvation.
Please join us for Stations of the Cross at 7:00 pm on the
Fridays of Lent.

Lenten Fish Fry. St. Michael’s is again hosting a Lenten
Fish Fry. These Lenten meals will be held on the Fridays
of Lent except for Good Friday. Dinner will be served
from 4:30 pm until 7:00 pm. We hope that you will join
us for dinner and then join us for Stations of the Cross.

St. Michael Christian Service
The St. Michael’s Seniors group welcomes members, single or couples, who are 55 years and
up. Our mission is to provide for the spiritual, social and educational needs of the members and to
give service to the broader community when possible.
Our meetings are being held at St. Rafka’s Church Hall (on Lyndon between Farmington and
Merriman roads) on the first and third Wednesdays of the month at noon. The hall has no steps and is
very accessible to all. Each member takes a turn bringing dessert. Every year during the holidays, the
seniors bring food items to pack baskets for the needy of the parish.
Our treasurer, Rita Virant will collect dues of $10.00 per year. Dolores Kowalski arranges trips
during the year and gives a presentation at each meeting of the trips available .
Our next meeting is February 18. On March 4, we will be having our annual Lenten Soup and Bread luncheon. All senior parishioners are welcome. If you wish to come, please call Helen Burger at 734-522-6449. Everyone will contribute to the cost for the
luncheon.
Upcoming Trips
On April 29, 2015, the seniors are having an Ethnic Dine Around. Our first stop is at the Moro’s Italian restaurant in Allen Park.
The appetizers will include minestrone soup, salad, bread and a non-alcoholic beverage. The Hungarian Rhapsody Restaurant in
Southgate will serve our main course. The choices include veal paprika, chicken paprika, one stuffed cabbage or a pork chop. A
non-alcoholic beverage is included in the meal. The restaurant has many Hungarian artifacts and handcrafts that fill the restaurant
and its mini museum. The final stop will be at Union street for dessert. The restaurant is located in the heart of Detroit. It has a
historic art deco ambience. The dessert choices include: tiramisu, chocolate mousse, or bread pudding and a non-alcoholic beverage. The price for this trip is $70.00. We will leave at 10:30 a.m. and return at approximately 3:45 p.m.
For more information, call Dolores Kowalski at 734-462-5970.
