Page 1 | 232 St. John the Baptist Catholic Church FEBRUARY 15, 2015 – SIXTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME Gospel Reflections A Letter from Our Pastor, Father Simi Dear brothers and sisters, He remained outside in deserted places, and people kept coming to him from everywhere. Mark 1:45 We live today in a world of selfies. Selfies. That was not even a word until very recently. It is used to refer to photos or pictures that one takes of oneself. It is when you turn the camera (now in all smartphones) on yourself and it may or may not include others standing next to you. This is not all. A selfie is typically meant to be posted by the same person in the very public arena of social media. Facebook is almost always filled with people who like taking pictures of themselves. They certainly want people to notice them. It seems like a real and acceptable expression of the need for recognition, of acceptance, of belonging into the wider community, though it is a community that exists largely in the virtual reality of the internet. This need is ancient: the need for connection, for belonging. The manner in which this need is expressed though is entirely new. The selfie is very technologically sophisticated. It is instantaneous, it is digital (higher resolution and clarity), and it is instantly global. This amazing technology seems to only highlight one other thing too: desperation. We seem even more desperate nowadays to belong, be accepted. This need for belonging and appreciation in its many desperate and unhealthy expressions is what fame is. Fame demands that I not only be noticed but that I be noticed that I am better than you, that I am the best. That is why a selfie is almost always taken and posted out there to show positive qualities about himself that that same person wishes to advertise on the internet and for which he hopes to receive likes, views, and adulation. Say something negative about that selfie and watch the wrath come out of that same person. Herein lies the great sadness. In trying to promote oneself in community, a person only ends up exposing his own real truth; that within him lies a very real, deep and evil illness of isolation that no one can seem to cure. It’s the leprosy we all suffer from. The isolation of the human heart. Deep down in each and every one human heart, we are so thoroughly alone, deserted, abandoned. This is the leprosy that we also all try so desperately to cure with our very technologically advanced yet very futile attempts. Sad. This is why our Lord is moved with pity from deep within His own soul too for the leper in the gospel for this Sunday. He is sad for all of us. He is here to remedy it, to cure us of this isolation, to restore our communion with His Father and with one another. The curing of this isolation means that He had to go there and be united with us there, in the deserted place that our soul is. That is going to be a very arduous and painful journey that passes through Gethsemane, Calvary and the most isolated of all places, the tomb. Hence the stern warning not to publicize the curing of the skin, because it was only skin deep. There was still a depth our Lord had yet to descend to, where He was going to reach the depth of every human soul. It the depth of isolation that is hell. The isolation hell in all of us. Yet, like the leper, we are impatient and settle for less. We are satisfied only with the curing of symptoms but not the cause of it all. Like the leper in the gospel, we choose not to go deeper. Let us ask our Lord to give us patience and fortitude. Let us ask for the courage to keep going deeper into our very own souls, embracing all its ugliness, brokenness, loneliness and pain. We will find that He is already there, waiting, welcoming us, forgiving us, healing us, loving us, reconciling us to our long lost Father and to each other. God bless you all, Fr. Simi Join Us As We Pray…For the Healing of All Families Monthly ADORATION continues this coming weekend FRIDAY, FEB. 19th thru SATURDAY, FEB. 20th Starting at 10am (immediately after the 9am Mass) concluding with Benediction at the end of the 9am Mass on Saturday Page 2 | 232 St. John the Baptist Catholic Church FEBRUARY 15, 2015 – SIXTH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME The Regina Academy at St. John the Baptist An opportunity for you to get to know us better: Do you seek the Lord Jesus with expectant faith? No one who sought Jesus out was refused his help. Even the untouchables and the outcasts of Jewish society found help in him. Unlike the people of Jesus' time who fled at the sight of a leper, Jesus touched the leper who approached him and he made him whole and clean. Lepers were outcasts of society. Their physical condition was terrible as they slowly lost their limbs and withered away. They were not only shunned but regarded as "already dead" even by their relatives. The Jewish law forbade anyone from touching or approaching a leper, lest ritual defilement occur. This leper did something quite remarkable. He approached Jesus confidently and humbly, expecting that Jesus could and would heal him. Normally a leper would be stoned or at least warded off if he tried to come near a rabbi. Jesus not only grants the man his request, but he demonstrates the personal love, compassion, and tenderness of God in his physical touch. Jesus met the man's misery with compassion and tender kindness. He communicated the love and mercy of God in a sign that spoke more eloquently than words. The Lord is always ready to show us his mercy and to free us from whatever makes us unclean. Let us pray…” Lord, inflame my heart with your love and make me clean. May I never cease to tell others of your love and mercy." Amen (Original date postponed due to the snow/ice) NEW DATE is Monday, Feb. 23rd Your Child is invited to Spend a Day at the Academy!
