Our vision is to love Jesus, our neighbours, and ourselves
Sunday 25th January 2015 (Third Sunday after Epiphany)
AFRAID TO BE KNOWN
Jules Pfeiffer has a powerful cartoon about a man who
is looking for love, but wants to protect himself against
being hurt. Perhaps you can imagine the eight pictures
in the cartoon sequence: the man says: "I live inside a
shell, that is inside a wall, that is inside a fort, that is
inside a tunnel, that is under the sea, where I am safe
from you. If you really loved me, you'd find me."
We all want to be loved. But to be loved is to be
accessible. To be vulnerable.
We have to be willing to be loved. That means willing to
be found, to be found out, to be discovered for what we are. And there's
the risk. Somehow, we fear that if people really knew what we were like,
they wouldn't love us, so we put up a facade. After a while we forget it’s a
facade, and think it’s us.
In our relationships at St Nic’s we need to drop the facade and get to know
and being known, care and being cared for, love and being loved. Our love
begins with the Lord who first loved us. (1 John 4:19) (adaptation or an article by
Clifford Ellioll from "Snapshots. Glimpses of God in ordinary life"Wood Lake Books)
