This is a note sent home with our high school students this week at Religious Education: “Parents and Students, this is the High School Religious Education Schedule for Spring 2015. Our meetings are not many in number, so I hope the students will make the effort to attend the classes we have. My schedule simply does not allow for any more than these classes. We have class every single Wednesday that I am available. If any parents would like to volunteer to teach, I would welcome the help. We will meet: March 11, 25, April 22, 29, May 6.” This week in High School Religious Education we discussed a number of topics including preparing for Lent, why we do penance, forms of penance, prayer, fasting and almsgiving. We also spoke about Mary and her place among the Saints and in our salvation because it was the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. And we finished by talking about the mystery of the Mass. Students are to bring any and all questions about the Mass for our next meeting when we will be discussing this source and summit of our Faith. St. Francis Movie Night will be held again Tuesday at 7:15 in the Hall this week. We will continue our enlightening series Catholicism. This month’s episode is titled The Vast Company of Witnesses: the Communion of Saints. This is sure to be another inspiring hour of learning about the Faith. A leper approaches Jesus for healing in the Gospel this weekend. He knows Jesus can make him whole again, so he kneels before him in trust and humility begging for this gift. Jesus grants the healing, of course. This story is told to us not just because it’s an instance of the Lord’s power and grace but because we are to put ourselves into the place of the leper. We are to emulate his characteristics of humility, trust, recognition that we are in need and that only Jesus can heal us. With Lent beginning this week, we Catholics will begin the healthy process of thinking about our faults and failings. We’re going to begin to devote ourselves in a special way to penance, prayer, and charity. We will also begin to think about how we need to approach our Lord the way the leper did: realize we are in need of healing, realize Jesus can and will heal us, realize that he does so through the way he set up for us: the Mass, the Eucharist and Confession. The Lord who loves and cares for us is the same on we see in the Gospel reaching out to the leper to heal him. Our Lord is reaching out to us in some very particular ways in the Church today. Let’s make sure we avail ourselves of his grace this Lent and all days. - Fr. Broheimer Events in Other Places The Elgin Knights of Columbus will hold a fish fry at the Elgin KC Hall on Ash Wed 18 Feb from 5:00-8:30 pm serving fish (breaded and non-breaded), potatoes, salads and drinks. St. Bonaventure Parish will hold a breakfast at the Raeville Parish Hall Sun 1 Mar 8:30 am to noon serving French toast, pancakes, sausage, ham, fruit, desserts and beverages for a free will offering. The Battle Creek Knights of Columbus will be having an all you can eat fish fry every Friday during Lent 5:30-8:00 pm (with the exception of Good Friday) at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall in Battle Creek $9 for adults, $5 for children 6-12 and free for kids 5 and under. Carry outs are available for $10 each. The menu will consist of Alaskan Pollock, baked potatoes, French fries, vegetable, coleslaw, fruit cocktail, dinner rolls and ice cream.
