DRUMSTICKS AND LEMONS
ON A TERRACE
Dr. Radhika of P. S. Sivaswamy Salai nurses a
grand garden on top of her home. She shares
her joys and disappointments at gardening.
By Preeti Srivatsan
Okras, tomatoes and
brinjals in pots? Nothing uncommon about
that - many people grow
them on their balconies
or terraces - but what
about drumsticks and
lemons? If you think
it is impossible to
grow them on a terrace - think again. Dr.
Radhika Balakrishnan,
a general practitioner
grows them in pots on
her terrace along with
other vegetables like
cabbage, turnips, green
5
MYLAPORE TIMES
chillies, mint, coriander, cluster beans and ten different
varieties of greens (keerai).
Radhika has been growing flowers in her garden
for more than a decade. Fed
up with the high levels of
pesticide in food and armed
with the need to taste fresh
vegetables, she decided to
start an organic vegetable
garden in her terrace about
3 years ago. She sought the
help of her friend - Lakshmi
Sriram,a garden enthusiast,
to set up the garden. She
says, “Being a doctor, I hardly
had the time to procure materials, look for seeds and start
the process. I asked Lakshmi
to help me and haven’t looked
back since then”.
Take a walk in her garden
and you will find hibiscus
in four different colours, six
varieties of jasmine, well
maintained roses, parijatham, manoranjitham and
more. The vegetables on the
other side of the garden are
her pride and joy. She smiles
when she talks about the
drumstick tree, “I grow a
dwarf variety of drumstick
in a green grow bag which
starts yielding in about 2
months. The plant is only
about 3 feet high and has
more than 100 drumsticks - all ready to
pluck and eat”.
Her biggest
challenge - the
lemon tree. She
says, “With any
organic garden,
pest control is
always a problem.
When we started
growing the lemon tree,
we had a lot of worms and
could only use neem oil and
panchakavyam to get rid of
them. It was a little difficult
to maintain initially but the
efforts paid off and now the
tree has about 6 small lemons.” “I also found it a little
difficult to grow cabbage but
since we had an extended
winter this time, the cabbage
yield turned out to be better
than expected. I have
about six now ready to be
harvested”, she adds.
Radhika has had her
share of disappointments
too but she points
out that it is
important to
keep up the
passion.
“Don’t
loose heart
if you loose
a plant”
she says, “I
tried to grow
cauliflower but unfortunately lost the entire
yield to pests. But I learnt
from that experience and
moved on”.
Radhika spends
about an hour in her
garden everyday and it
is evident that cultivating vegetables relieves
her stress and lifts her
spirits. Maintenance she
says is very important
for a garden. “Pruning at
the appropriate time and
using manure, pesticides
and fungicides regularly
(for flowers) will help the
plants grow and will keep
them healthy”.
Future plans? She has
covered a part of her terrace with a green tarpaulin with the intention to
grow vegetables that need
less heat like beetroot and
cauliflower. She is also
making arrangements to
grow pumpkins, different
kinds of gourds and fruits
like sapota, banana and
gooseberry.
She is a resident of
P. S. Sivaswamy Salai,
Mylapore.

Radhika’s Tips:
l If you don’t have much
time, try growing bougainvilleas. They are
very easy to grow and
are not attacked by pests.
l Water stagnation must
be avoided.
l Visit your garden everyday.
l Have a look at the leaves.
They are good indicators
of problems.
l Remove weeds
immediately.

CAMPAIGN: MAKE MADA STREETS ‘ONE WAY’
Sign your support at Nageswara Rao Park
By Our Staff Reporter
V I N C E N T
D ’ S O U Z A
I am pottering around the souvenirs shop on the
banks of the Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh one recent
late evening.
It is Valentine’s Day. So while the young ones with big
purses are in Sector 17, swinging to a DJ’s music at a local pub,
other couples are walking around the Lake Complex or finding
spaces in the softly-lit campus to steal some private moments.
Souvenir shops are always on my destination list - the stuff
here gives you a peek into the place you are visiting.
Here then, among the fridge magnets and caps, T-shirts and
pens, all carrying the legends and signatures of the city, are a set
of drawings and simple art. Architecturaal art of the man who
visualized Chandigarh - Le Corbusier.
If you have visited what is India’s best designed city and
love it then you may want to purchase one of these works by the
master architect.
Or pick up framed photos of the Capital buildings.
The open spaces, the greens, the wooded zones are perhaps
what makes this a city that many of us might want to live in.
This Sunday, a NGO and the city managers and traffic police
are launching a new project - to create a ‘no traffic zone in one
part of the city from 9 am to 2 pm.
Raahgiri Day is an effort to reclaim city streets from traffic
and hawking.
In Sector 42, the roads and streets over 3 Kms stretch are to
be closed to all modes of vehicles but cycles!
The freed zone is open to the community - you can cycle
around, go through a fitness routine, extend your morning walk,
join the zumba session and then sit for a soft music concert in
the square.
Chandigarh’s activists say that there is a need to ‘free’
spaces from bikes and cars and gain more free space that is
not polluted.
This is to be a weekly event in the life of this city. And the
local government is closely involved in it.
Local newspapers carried adverts announcing the event. The
state’s officers met the media to talk about the idea.
Who then must promote such ideas? People. The community.
They need to take the first step. Take it when they feel
strongly about such ideas. I am often amazed at how communities in planned sectors of
Chennai like Anna Nagar and K. K. Nagar and Besant Nagar let
stores and vehicles, civic bodies and residents trample all
over them.
These are nagars which have wide-open spaces, streets and
roads that need some respite from bikes and vans, hawkers and
waste. Freeing a zone is not enough. The community has also got
to make use of it. For starters, can we free the road alongside Elliots Beach
from all forms of vehicles on Sunday evenings? And do the same
around the Tower in Anna Nagar?
The three mada streets
around Sri Kapali Temple in
Mylapore are part of a heritage zone and must be treated
as such. Thousands of people
from the city, across India
and also foreigners visit them
daily through out the year.
This area is a showcase of
the city. But traffic overload
is causing immense problems
though this is just one of the
problems that mar this zone.
Since early January, a few
Mylaporeans have launched
an online petition asking the
city Traffic Police to consider
making the three streets ‘one
way’ and to also consider
making a part of this zone a
‘walk only’ zone on weekends,
at least for a few hours.
They say that the three
mada streets must be made
to be for enjoyable walking and slow driving so that
visitors have a memorable
visit and daily users are not
stressed out.
Abhiramapuram resident Sridhar Venkataraman
initiated this campaign on
the suggestion of Vincent D’
Souza, editor of Mylapore
Times and curator of the annual Mylapore Festival. The petition suggests
that the Chennai City Police
introduce ‘one way’ in these
streets so that the traffic flow
is smooth and pedestrians
can walk freely too.
“We are aware that Chennai Corporation has a big
plan to redesign this zone too
and that it has been delayed
for reasons not known. While
we await that plan, the Police
can start implementing this
system,” states the petition.
The Police can also consider a WALK ONLY ZONE
on a few days of the week for
a few hours. This is a concept
that is internationally employed in all heritage zones,
it states.
It lists the plus points of
having a new system in place - local residents get easy and
clear access to their homes,
more shoppers come here
because they enjoy the
window shopping benefits

VEENA GURU IS 80
Relatives, friends and
students of Amirthavarshini
Veena Gana Nilyam’s guru Annapoorni recently celebrated her Sathabhishekam
(80th birthday) at Keerthi
Hall, Mylapore. Veena
Vidhushi R. S. Jayalakshmi
was the chief guest. The
students of the school played
popular songs and keerthanas to honour their guru.
in a quiet zone and tourists
stand to enjoy the sights of
old houses, the temple, the
shops and the quaint nooks
which will be freely open
to all.
The campaign asks the
police to earmark a Parking
Zone outside this heritage
area. “People must be encouraged to walk to this zone and
enjoy its uniqueness. This
system is common in many
historic towns, “ says Sridhar.

will be at the rear gate of

FASCINATION FOR FLOOR ART
Chantal Jumel has made Mylapore her
year-end home, to study local creative work.
By Our Staff Reporter
‘As a life traveller I
landed in South India
many, many years ago.
Kathakali and traditional
floor paintings have
been part of my journey
and I learned to draw
the vibrant kolam on
the threshold of Tamil
houses. . .”
Those are the words
of Frenchwoman Chantal
Jumel who makes a room
at Mylapore’s Karpagam
Hotel on South Mada
Street her home for about
three months almost
every year.
In this quiet, austere
room, part living space,
part work studio Chantal
mulls on the experiences
of her day and works on
her art.
Chantal is exhibiting her recent works at
the Apparao Galleries in
Wallace Gardens Road,
Nungambakkam now
(it is on till Feb 28). The
works are what Chantal
calls ‘symbolic writing
with the syllable OM on
rice, bamboo or mulberry
tree paper.’
As she explains, “The
repetitive nature of my
work frees my imagination to write about
human nature and at a
time when the world is
saturated with colours
and noise, I chose monochrome ink for its quali-
ties of abstraction and silence
enabling a contemplative
relationship with the rapid
flow of the so called ‘reality’.”
Chantal flew in last
December and chose to giving finishing touches to her
works in the quiet of her
Mylapore hotel. Post-Christmas she toured Rajasthan to
followup on her study of the
amazing illustrations that
the locals create all over their
houses. Today, Chantal is
happy that she has managed
to have a show in a city
she loves.
Mylapore is her haunt
- she walks down to have a
cup of coffee at the local shop,
chats with the locals, checks
out a concert at the Bhavans,
enjoys tiffin at her Chitrakulam friend’s place and talks
about kolams with friends
she has made locally.
Chantal absorbed creative
ideas early. As she says, “My
grandmother was an expert
embroiderer and my mother
too. The images of their
kindly faces will always
be with me. They used
to sew coloured flowers,
animals or objects on old
cotton sheets at the time
of Christmas and Easter. “
A graduate of Sorbonne
University, Chantal Jumel
is a freelance researcher,
traveller and writer, specialised in Indian visual
and performing art. She is the author of
two books ‘Voyage dans
l’imaginaire Indien,
Kolam, dessins éphémères
des femmes tamoules’ (A
journey through graphical India, Kolam, ephemeral drawings by Tamil
women) and ‘Kolam et
Kalam, peintures rituelles
éphémères de l’Inde du
Sud’ ( Kolam and kalam,
South Indian ephemeral and ritual paintings),
Geuthner, Paris,
2013-2010. She gives lecture
demonstrations, organises workshops in various
structures forms and creates ephemeral paintings
and murals within the
framework of exhibitions and festivals or on a
purely individual basis.
In 1982, Chantal
travelled to South India
to learn the traditional
dance-drama Kathakali
under the well known
master Kalamandalam
Krishna Nair, the classical dance Mohini-Attam
and later on, ephemeral ground paintings by
means of mineral and
vegetable powders. “During my many
sojourns, I have learn
from Tamil Nadu women
the repertory and symbolism of kolam and from
Parameswara Kurup, a
ritual painter attached
to the famed temple of
Ambalapuzha in Kerala,
the technique and spirit of
kalam ground painting.”
Teaching and research
were made possible by
scholarships through the
Indo-French Cultural
Exchange Program and an
allowance of the “Centre
National du Livre” (Paris). Over the past 3 years,
research travels have
taken her to Rajasthan
and Bengal to document
local floor decorations
Mandana and Alpona. Chantal plans to write
a book on these experiences too.

artist at 9791426811.

This was the man who sowed the
seeds for the Madras Book Fair and
nurtured it. And he made all the efforts to involve book sellers, readers

Mathew was responsible for
starting the Chennai Book Fair in 1977. He later launched the
Student’s Book Fair. A colorful procession to launch the events
remain in the city’ memory.
He was born in Mavelikkara, Kerala and began his career
in 1945 as a salesman with Christian Literature Society (CLS).
He went on to become its manager (sales).
After 25 years at CLS, he joined BI Publications as its
regional manager. He retired from BI at 83. He then joined
hands with three other friends to launch Ecumenical Book
Services, a publishing house for textbooks on nursing
He was founder secretary of the Ecumenical Fellowship in
Madras, which organised the Human Christmas Tree. His wife
Mariamma Mathew was the nursing superintendent at CSI

He also wrote his autobiography, titled ‘You Turned My

Mathew was a social activist and played that role in his
neighbourhood - Luz Avenue. For many years, this community
had a few annual events to better local fellowship and keep the

Sivarathri
Celebrations
at Local Temples
All the local Shiva temples
took on a festive air for
Maha Sivarathri. The
temples were bustling with
activity and devotees took
up singing of bhajans to
keep them awake through
the night. Here is a look
at what was happening
at some of the temples in
the area when Mylapore
Times photographer
Madhan did the rounds on
Tuesday night:
1
Gangadhara Shiva. In
the temple, special puja
was performed by the
archakar.
3. Sri Malleeswarar
Temple
This temple does
something new every
Sivarathri. This year,
there were models depicting animals performing puja to Lord Shiva.
There was a tiger, ant,
cow, peacock, and snake
performing the puja.
There was a novelty in
the abhishekams also,
with more than 30 varieties of fruits being used.
1. Sri Velleeswarar
Temple
Devotees sang bhajans
and listened to nadaswaram
music while taking the darshan of the Lord. 2. Sri Viruppaksheeswarar Temple

his dad’s footsteps, performed

4. Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple
This was the busiest temple in the area,
with more than 10,000 people
queuing up to witness special
kaala pujas, abhishekams
and perform archanais. The
utsava murthis were
arranged on the Sivarathiri
mandapam and archanais
were performed here. Kaala
pujas and
abhishekams were
performed to the
deities inside the
sanctum santorum. Small
children, ladies and senior citizens all joined in to
keep the bhajans going on
through the night.
5. Sri Kaaraneeswarar Temple
Devotees lighted
lamps in front of the
Shiva linga below the
arasa maram inside the
temple. Devotees also
sang bhajans through
the night.
6. Ramakrishna
Math
About 500 devotees
gathered for the special
puja that was performed
at 1 a.m.
After the puja, offerings were made to
the Shiva lingam and
swamijis and devotees
made a pradhakshana of
the mutt while singing
bhajans.

Big ride by autos
Recently, we had to go to Perambur from Mandaveli, for
a function. The first automan quoted Rs.350 but agreed for
Rs.300. The second automan quoted Rs.200 (he refused to use
the meter).
We had no other go but to take this one.
On our return trip, a good Samaritan autodriver agreed for
the meter rate. The meter showed Rs.115.
I realized the extent of fleecing that these men do.

Hawker zones;
adopt Singapore model
The removal of hawkers on the Mada
Street makes me feel for them.
There is a way in which they can be accommodated.
Take the Singapore model which has a dry
and wet market in each colony. Meat and fish
are sold in one space, veggies in another and
provisions in yet another space.
They have hawker centres in every residential area for people living there. There are
also a minimum of twenty food outlets, all
selling non vegetarian Chinese food only.
The vegetarian food stalls are called Buddhist shops.
Most house-bound seniors living alone
come to these hawker zones to shop or eat.
Chennai Corporation can think of plans on
these lines.

Dug up Luz Church Road pollutes

The Luz Church Road section from Luz
signal to Nageswara Rao Park was dug up six
months ago for electricity cable laying.
The trenches were was h full of sand, dust
and rubbles.
The road has not been totally covered and
tarred ( with bitumen). As a result dust flies all
over which is a health hazard for the residents
as well as for the pedestrians and two wheeler
riders who inhale the air.
Residents like me (being senior citizens) who are asthma patients suffer very
much. I request Chennai Corporation / EB to
address the issue.

The stray dog menace on Visweswarapuram is severe. Complaints made to Chennai

Park-goer shares his woes
Inspite of a letter published in Mylapore Times a month
ago, no action has been taken so far by the police authorities
regarding the parking of motor bikes and presence of some
vendors just in front of the gate of Nageswara Rao Park.
This is causing a lot of inconvenience to all who visit the
park, more so for seniors.
Also, the clock provided inside the park is showing the
wrong time on one side for some weeks now.
Why are people allowed to sleep on benches here?

Saravana Bhavan; why three different prices
for same order
I was at Hotel Saravana Bhavan in Dr. R. K. Salai last
week on two consecutive days. I used the self service facility, the take-away service and also dined there and thus got to
realize the discrepancies in the food prices.
A particular dish has three prices on the bill for three
services. I wrote to Saravana Bhavan about this but did not get
a reply.
Why is there different pricing and why do we not get bills
against some food?
- Mohandas, R.A.Puram.

We appreciate the series of photo features in Mylapore

We hope a wider photo gallery is created online so more

Temple for Sivaratri. People came in their thousands and
enjoyed a quiet, well arranged service to pray and take part in
the events here. Best wishes to the temple team.
