Conquer the Concrete is a
Street Art project initiated by the
Goethe Institut in Chennai in
which German and Indian artists
have joined hands to paint in
public spaces. This past week,
these groups have been at work
at rail stations, in schools and
on walls along the city main
roads. Artists George Zolchow
and Base 23 were at the
Chennai Corporation School on
Veera Perumal Street, Mylapore
(near Vivekananda College) to
do their bit and the duo allowed
the senior students here to join
them. Similar street art works
were executed at the
Greenways Road MRTS station
and alongside Bharatiya Vidya
Bhavan, Mylapore.

REPUBLIC DAY SNAPSHOTS
By Preeti Srivatsan
The results of days
of preparation were
evident at the Republic
Day parade held on
early Monday morning
on the Marina promenade. Floats of state
departments driving by,
school students marching to band music and
college students dancing
freely at the roundabout of the clock tower
of P. ORR & Sons were
indeed a sight to watch.
A few thousand people
from all walks of life
gathered at the Marina to
witness the extravaganza.
The entire stretch of
the Marina was barricaded
to allow the parade, floats
and dancers to move along
smoothly. People started
queuing up as early as 6 a.m.
to ensure they secured a good
viewing space. Traffic from as
far as San Thome church was
regulated by the policemen
who were at their posts at 4
a.m.
The enthusiasm of the
school students in the parade
was high - taking part in it
is a special moment. Students from several Mylapore
1

schools including Vidya
Mandir, Lady Sivaswami
Girls School, Children’s Garden, Rosary and Chettinad
Vidyashram took part in the

the flag hoisting ceremony. A cultural programme followed - the
highlight being ‘Mana

scripted and directed
by staff member R.

At Sivaswami
Kalalaya Senior

D ’ S O U Z A
If you have a friend in the Indian Navy you must
invite yourself to the Naval campus atop a hill that overlooks the port town of Vishakapatnam. Better still, get
yourself booked into their guest quarters. And then buy a
visitor’s pass to the light house on the hill.
Dolphin’s Nose juts into the sea, as if the imagined animal is
trying to eternally sniff at all that floats across the bay in this part
of the country.
Ages ago an Englishman decided that this was the best location
for a light house. He was wholly correct. He had a job to do - we
had another on our hands.
My friend D. Hemachandra Rao, just 76 has been on the road
for over a fortnight now, having set off with a driver in his enduring Ford from his home in Virugambakkam.
His odyssey is to check out every light house in the country
- new, old, dilapidated and ghostly. As I write this Rao must be zipping into West Bengal, to do light work of the last of the beacons
that guide ships and boats in the Bay of Bengal.
Last weekend, I joined Rao at Vishakapatnam late evening - he
had clocked over 1750 kms and thought it fit to head to the hotel
bar, order for whiskey and then polish off a plate of fish and chips.
Over drinks he had loads of stories to share till the call came from
our host - engineer Krishna Rao who heads the operations atop
Dolphin’s Nose.
In the misty night, we raced to the top, left behind a sprawling
Naval Colony and paused for good in the Light House campus.
These structures have a life of their own and often, they seem eerie
as they flash the light every few seconds and let the moonlight
bathe the black and white stripes in the cold of a January night.
From the balcony of the quarters that stood below the light, we
enjoyed Vishakapatnam’s own necklace of lights as the faint flecks
of music from the Vishaka Festival being held on the beachfront
rose to the top.
Krishna Rao had just got back from an ‘inspection tour’ of two
local light houses. He had been recently elevated, and so had lots
on his hands. He was to retire in a few months. So that night, as we
dined on food bought at the Naval Canteen, we listened as one Rao
quizzed another Rao.
Krishna Rao came from a family of Light House men. His
grandfather travelled to Burma and served in a Light House. His
dad followed, employed by the Indian government - serving at
places raised by the British and overseeing the building of new
ones. At one remote light house, the man had contributed his
money to lay a road to the spot from the closest village.
“Will your son also get in?”
“ I have only daughters!’
Besides stories, Hemachandra Rao will come back with loads
of materials - postal covers with visuals of light houses and unique
stamps bearing a local postal cancellation, photos of installations
and geography yet to be shot and bits of memorabilia.
Rao has one off the best collections on ships, sea-faring events
and light houses - postage stamps, currency, covers and more. Like
mariners, he has to set sail after every expedition. But when he has
time to spare, he is happy to host exhibitions, especially for young
people. As long as the hosts are sincere and passionate.
I wonder how a city can showcase the works of such men
and women.
JAYANTHI NATARAJAN’S
QUITS CONGRESS
People began to gather outside
the residence of Congress leader
Jayanthi Natarajan on Bhaktavatsalam Road on Friday morning
after her strongly-worded letter
written to Congress leader Sonia
Gandhi last year was made public
in The Hindu newspaper. Jayanthi has questioned what she calls
‘ a series of vilification campaigns’
against her after she moved out of
the Environment ministry when
the UPA was in power. People
wondered if Jayanthi too was
preparing to quit the Congress.
Later in the day, Jayanthi
resigned from the congress party.
WELCOME TO
THE TEPPAM
By Our Staff Reporter
The annual teppam
festival at Sri Kapali Temple
in Mylapore will be held from
February 3 to 5 in the month
of thai.
Ever since the state
arranged for the revival of
this temple’s tank and also
ensured water flowed into it
from time to time, the teppam
has been celebrated grandly.
The religious rituals and
ceremonies are highlighted
with the extensive illumination inside the temple and in
the tank.
The teppam fest, say temple priests is a time for the
Lord to present himself to the
one of the reasons why the
Lords and their consorts go
around the tank in a grandly
designed float.
On Day One, the Lord
Kapaleeswar and goddess
Karpagambal are taken
around five times. On each
round, Vedic verses,
Thamizh maraigal and music
is recited / sung.
On Day Two, Lord Murugan ( Singaravelar) and his
consorts Valli and Deivanai
are taken around the tank in
the float seven times.
On Day Three, Lord
Murugan and his consorts do
the rounds of the tank nine
times.
People are allowed inside
the tank premises from all
sides of the tank one gate -
on R. K. Mutt
Road alone is
secured - the
gods enter the
tank here after
being brought in
a procession from
the temple via
East and South
Mada Streets.
Guests, musicians and priests board the
teppam here. A few people
are allowed every evening to
be on the float on each of its
rounds.
Many people who sit on
the steps of the tank set float
lit lamps as the teppam ritual
progresses.
Traffic is curtailed on the
main road for some time.
n Videos and photos of the
teppam will be posted on the
FaceBook page, the web site
and in the video channel of
Mylapore Times.
n You too can share links of your
pictures of the teppam.
We will highlight them!
Padma Shri award for violinist Kanyakumari
By Our Staff Reporter
Had Queen Mary’s College turned down A. Kanyakumari’s
admission application a second time would her life have taken a
different turn?
Perhaps yes, perhaps no.
This senior Carnatic music violinist and Mandaveli resident
has now been chosen by the state for the Padma Shri award - in
recognition of her contribution to the arts.
Many decades ago, Kanyakumari landed in the city, seeking
admission to QMC’s Department of Music, which has well known
alumnae to its credit. The college did not have a seat for this girl
from Andhra Pradesh. A chance meeting with a family friend at the
government secretariat helped gain admission on the rebound.
Kanyakumari completed her formal education, also studied
under greats like M. L. Vasanthakumari and is today, a top-rung
violinist who tours the state, the country and the world. She is
often seen performing alongside saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath.

Old Students Rewind
at Alumni Meets
By Preeti Srivatsan
Three schools had
their annual ‘meet and
greet’ sessions on Jan
26 this year - Lady’s
Sivaswami Girls School,
Mylapore, St. Bede’s
School, San Thome and
Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya Higher Secondary
School, Mandaveli. Hugs
and phone numbers
were exchanged, teachers were felicitated and
old times were remembered. The trip down
memory lane resulted in
a few tears too.
At the St. Bede’s
campus, the Old Bedeans were overwhelmed
by the welcome they received. Basil Srinivasan,
an alumni of the 1990
batch talks about why
this reunion was so important to them, “This is
our 25th year”, he says
proudly, “At last year’s
reunion, about eight of
us decided that we must
do something special for
our silver jubilee. We got
a list of the students from the
school and started tracking
them through whatsapp and
facebook. We managed to
track 68 students. 60 of them
made it to the meet this year.
We even managed to track
down members in U.S.A, U.K,
Europe, China and Australia.
About 15 members flew down
just for this event”.
The old students of the
1990 batch did not stop at
that. They wanted to felicitate their teachers and they
located 14 teachers who they
invited to the event. Basil
says, “Two teachers - Maria
and Pushpanathan couldn’t
walk - we went to their houses and carried them here”.
All the students of that batch
wore T-Shirts with the school
logo and badges specially
made for this occasion. The
students also received albums
with pictures of their time
spent at the school. A banner
with present day pictures of
the students was also put up
at the campus.
About 14 members from
the 1967 batch were also seen
reliving their old memories
with their batchmates and
juniors. A. Alexander Ninan
says, “Though I passed out
more than 45 years ago, I still
remember my days spent at
the school. Our teachers were
always inspiring us to work
harder and better”. At Sir Sivaswami Kalalaya Higher Secondary
School, Mandaveli, about
70 students got together to
interact with one another and
talk about the good times.
The principal G. Pandian
says, “Our school is looking
for space in and around the
Mylapore area to expand and
we wanted to reach out to the
alumni members to help us
get donors. As soon as we put
forth our plans, the students
voluntarily decided to form
a committee to help us raise
funds. A number of commendable suggestions came up
after which the office bearers
decided to meet during the
first week of Feb to talk about
strategies and proposals”.
At Lady’s Sivaswami Girls
School, the old girls from the
1965 batch were celebrating their 50th year and the
members of the 1990 batch
were celebrating their 25th
year. R. Kalyani, a member of
the 1990 batch says, “About
40 members from our batch
attended the meet. We had a
green uniform back then and
so all of us decided to come
dressed in green. We started
the celebration with games
for the girls. An old student Geetha Padmanabhan,
columnist at The Hindu, was
the chief guest. She talked
about her time at the school
with funny anecdotes. Our
batch then donated a sum of
1.8 lakhs towards enhancement of the sound system at
the school”.65 year old alumni member - S. Vasantha has
nostalgic memories about her
time at the school. She says,
“Only one teacher - our
present correspondent
Leela Narendran is still
at the school. All the
other teachers have long
retired. I cannot forget
our headmistress at that
time - Chellamal who
took English - she really
inspired us to achieve
greatness”.
She also fondly
remembers her maths
teachers - Kamala Rajagopalan and Mythili
and KG headmistress
Satyabama who took
English. The members
of the 1965 batch too
donated a sum of Rs.
28000 towards improving the acoustics at the
school auditorium.

VADA PAV AND SANDWICHES AT EATERY ON Dr. R. K. SALAI
By Preeti Srivatsan
A quick eat and take away place ‘Brunch’ owned and operated by cousins
R. Ranjith and M. Naveen Kumar opened
its doors to Mylaporeans recently. The
joint offers a wide range of vegetarian
sandwiches, toasts, chat items, fresh
juices, milk shakes and icecreams. Naveen talks about how all this
started, “I am a foodie and love trying out
different cuisines. I have always wanted
to eat and serve good, tasty food. After
discussing my plans with
my cousin - Ranjith, we
decided to open a small
eatery (about 120 sq.ft) in
Mylapore. We wanted to
serve the food at nominal
rates and
so nothing in our shop
costs more
than Rs.100”.
Vada pav, murukku
sandwich and veg grilled
cheese toast are their
specialities. “Our sandwiches, toasts, juices and milk shakes
are available throughout the day but we
start selling our chat items from 1 p.m.
We make atleast 100 vada pavs everyday
and they are usually sold out by 6 p.m.”
says Naveen.
Don’t forget to try their
pineapple cheese sandwich,
tiranga sandwich, bread
corn cheese toast, bombay
special bhel poori, dahi
samosa chaat, carrot juice,
beetroot juice, butterscotch
and cherry milk shake.
For Cadbury lovers they
have four different kinds of
shakes - dairy milk, 5 star,
fruit and nut and crackle
shake.
“Quality is our first
priority”, says Naveen who
personally supervises the
procurement of bread, butter and veggies. “My day
starts early..I first go to
Shree Mithai at Chetpet to
get bread, then to an Amul distributor to
get cheese and butter and then finally to
Park Town to get vegetables and fruits”,
he adds.
They have also tied up with www.
justeat.in and get internet orders through
the website. Their corporate customers
include HDFC Bank, Yes Bank, Ramcons,
Singapore Airlines, Malaysian Airlines
and Vasan Health Care to name a few.
Future Plans - “I plan to open three
more branches this year and also hope
to serve south Indian food. I also have
plans to open a
restaurant in the
near future”, says
Naveen.
The chaat shop
is located at No.
78/103, R. K. Salai,
Off. Jambulingam
Road, Mylapore.

SAN THOME MOURNS A
MAN FOR ALL SEASONS:
JOHN BRITTO
One of San Thome’s best
loved persons, M. John Britto
passed away on January 25
after quietly battling kidney
and other complications at a
Mylapore hospital. Britto was the Office
Manager in the San Thome
Cathedral Basilica. He came
from a family which has a
long history in San Thome
and in this parish.
Britto had worked for
Dunlop and when the
company declared a lockout he joined the team at
the Cathedral as its office manager when
Rev. Fr. Tony Devotta (now Bishop of Trichy) was the
parish priest.
Over the years, Britto developed speed, knowhow and the ability to deal with the multitude of
office work at the bustling Basilica parish. He knew
all the clergy and the religious, he kept important
records, received payments, did the bank work and
attended to several calls. He also had to answer all the queries that parishioners and tourists posed. In a way, one can say that
he was the Basilica’s Google.
He also had a talent for sacred music - he could
sing in English, Latin and Tamil and he would join
the church liturgy at all times of the day. Officially,
he sang for one of the cathedral’s English choirs. Britto began his day very early. At 3 a.m. He
would say his prayers privately and then join the
early-morning-regulars at the Cathedral, come rain
or shine. He would carry the keyboard and prayer
and music books for the first Mass, every morning. For those church-goers who regularly attend the
early morning Mass, Britto’s passing away is an
emotional blow.
Hundreds of people attended the funeral Mass on
Republic Day afternoon.
Sixteen priests joined Bishop Rev. Tony Devotta to
celebrate this Mass. Two choirs sang for Britto’s funeral, one in English and the other in Tamil. Among
the songs sung at the funeral was “Liberame”, sung
in Latin. “Lots of people were in tears after tributes
were paid here, “ said a family member. So moved
was the bishop that he asked the choirs to sing the
‘Gloria’ ( a prayer song that is not sung at funerals
but at celebratory services).
The Britto family is a branch of a San Thome
family that has been living here for close to a century, with the best known name of this family tree
being Joseph John, a well-known choir master at the
cathedral. No wonder the cathedral was overflowing
at the funeral service and in the procession to Quibble Island cemetery.
Said Britto’s daughter Mercy Auxilia, “If there is
one facet of my dad’s life I will remember and miss
is his love for all of us. He visited me and my family
near Saint Lazarus Church after my marriage every
evening for over ten years, rain or sunshine. He was
at our door at 7.30. Neighbours said they could set
their clock on seeing him here. He was so exact and
so loving.”
To mark that intense love, Britto was buried in
the grave where Mercy’s daughter was buried after
the little one passed away suddenly some years ago.
Britto leaves behind his wife, a son and a
daughter.
The Britto family resides at 6/2, Lynn Pereira
Street, San Thome. Phone - 24617338.

Images of Mylapore
There are a few images
which are unique to Mylapore.
For most people it must be
Sri Kapali Temple. For some
others it could be the mada
veedhis, especially at festival
time. There are other spaces
which evoke memories.
Among them is the Nageswara Rao Park in Luz, the
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, a
hub for music and dance, Luz
Circle for shoppers and hawkers and shops like Mami’s
Mess and Janal Bajji kadai.
Online images of these
places trigger different feelings. One place where I seek
them out is the Facebook
page of Mylapore Times.

Non-resident Mylaporeans love
Mylapore Times E-paper
For those working abroad and yet wanting to
be surrounded by the fondest memories of Cool
Old Mylapore, we have to rely on the Mylapore
Times E-paper edition. In Dubai, the number of
Tamilians, especially from Mylapore are quite
large in numbers. We wait for the E-paper edition every Saturday to get a glimpse of Mylapore life and then
use it to keep rumbling on the most cherished
memories, either over a breakfast table or during
the evening walks across the Zabeel Park near
Sana signal in Bur Dubai.
Kudos to Mylapore Times for helping us to
reconnect to Mylapore from far flung places.
My favourite has been the Jottings column by
the editor. It blends the present with the past and kindles memories branded in the heart. It is just not
pongal and kaapi, the temple tank and the sale
of vegetables on the mada veedhis that makes
life in Mylapore but also the classy repertoire of
activities.

Litter around liquor shop;
need for garbage bin
I request Chennai Corporation and
Ramky to keep a large
bin near the TASMAC
liquor shop - shop
no. 914, Canal Bank
Road. This will prevent littering on the
roads especially by
those who frequent the
shop/bar.

Aadhar Card registration
was cool
I had a very positive experience during my
Aadhar Card process. I did not have a Census
slip and had heard horror stories from several
quarters. Since my son had already received
his Aadhar card, all I had to do was take his
acknowledgement receipt along with our ration
card and my processing was completed within
5 minutes. The officials (at the C P Ramasamy Road
office opposite Mylapore Times office) were extremely co-operative and there was no queue at
the centre. They were even patient with a senior
citizen who was unnecessarily abusive!

Abhiramapuram civic issue;
why the fuss?
I read the article about the new shop that is
coming up in Abhiramapuram. I do not see what
the fuss is all about. As a resident of Abhiramapuram I am eagerly awaiting the shop’s opening
as it will save my time while shopping.

Chitrakulam needs more attention We liked the wide pictorial coverage in
Mylapore Times of the teppam in the Chitrakulam recently. It is nice to see the tank as it
should be.
Mylaporeans request the state to ensure that
there is steady water supply to this tank. Before
doing this, the pollution must be cleared and a
large fence set up all around it.
The hawkers must be fined if they dump
waste in the tank.
Let us look forward to a lovely tank for the
2016 teppam fest.

SAN THOME CAMPUS
MEMORIES
Retired Head Masters and teachers sat with ‘old’
students on Saturday at San Thome High School
to celebrate a milestone
By Our Staff Reporter
When Brother
Dr. A. Selvanathan, aged
72 years and Brother
George Kallamkode,
aged 67 years and a
National awardee for
best teacher stepped out
of their rooms in the San
Thome High School campus last Saturday, they
were greeted like heroes
by groups of guests who
were keen to see and
wish them.
The two were among
seven past Head Masters
of this school who were
present to celebrate a
milestone in the life of
the congregation of the
Montfort Brothers - the
diamond jubilee of the
congregation’s management of this school which
used to be with the local
Catholic diocese.
There were close to
1000 alumni members,
some as senior as of the
1960 and 1970 batches
and some who had
just passed out of the
campus.
The celebrations ran
through the whole day starting with Holy Mass,
followed by breakfast,
face to face meetings of
alumni, staff, past teachers and Head Masters
and the brothers.
Later in the evening,
started a string of cultural
events - music, dance and a
skit which traced the history of the Brothers in San
Thome.
It was a time to mingle
and talk shop and reconnect. San Thome School’s
alumni boasts of some well
known people. Those present included film actor and
director Prabhudeva, singer
P. Unnikrishnan, musi-
cian Thai Anban, Salem
Prinicipal Court Judge
Rajasekhar, cine actor
Ashok Selvan, cricketer
Hemang Badani and Asst
. Commr. of Income
Tax, Chennai, Karthik
Manikam.
As the music floated
into the night, so did the
memories of San Thome
and of the school which
has been special to thousands the past 60 years.
