MYLAPORE TIMES 3 4 MYLAPORE TIMES Margazhi Flavours By Preeti Srivatsan Mylapore comes alive during the month of Margazhi. The streets of Mylapore reflect this season of devotion with people getting up as early as 5 a.m. to decorate their doorsteps with colourful pulli kolams. Mamis in pattu sarees can be seen attending music and dance events or rushing to temples to recite the Thiruppavai or listen to discourses. Not discouraged by the cool morning air, groups gather and walk around the mada veedhis singing bhajans and songs. Take a quick walk on South Mada Street in the morning and you cannot miss the sight of vendors selling their colourful kolam powders. Rajagopal, who sells kolam powder outside the Vanniyar Mandapam at South Mada Street, Mylapore, opens his small roadside shop at around 7 in the morning and is often seen till late in the evening. He sells over 20 different colours at Rs. 5 per packet. White kolam powder is also available with him. Walk a little further and catch the vendors selling flowers in small plastic bags for people looking for a quick buy. For those looking to buy large quantities December 27, 2014 - January 2, 2015 hop into R. Karthikeyan’s shop - RKN Flowers on South Mada Street, Mylapore. He sells more than 20 different varieties of flowers including rose, chrysanthemum (chamanthi), nerium oleander (arali), magnolia champaca (sampangi) and several others. An employee who works at the store says, “Most of the flowers are sold to temples as several utsavams are held during this season. People who pray at home usually prefer rose and chamanthi”. So where do they get their flowers? He says, “We have a shop in Parrys. Everyday farmers sell their flowers to us directly at that shop. We bring it to Mylapore from there. We get most of our flowers from Bangalore, Kadapa and Arakonam”. His shop is located at 34, South Mada Street, Mylapore. From 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. Ph: 42023455. To add to the Margazhi flavour, temples too organise special alangarams and festivities for this season. Seen in picture is the diety of Sri Kapali Temple in a grand alangaram. A quick visit to the inner streets of Mylapore - Appu Mudali Street, the Chitrakulam area, Pitchu Pillai Street and Apparswamy Street to name a few will give you the sights of the season. Beautiful kolams, some traditional, some with a modern twist cover the street from end to end. Anandavalli, who resides at Pitchu Pillai Street, has been drawing kolams for about 10 years. For one whole month, she draws kolams in front of her house, Sankara madam and a small temple in the street. She says, “I use about 15 colours everyday and so I buy my supplies for a whole month and stock it. It takes about two hours for me to complete the process”. (Picture 4) December 27, 2014 - January 2, 2015 MYLAPORE TIMES Santa Tour By Preeti Srivatsan Every year, Mylapore Times hosts a Santa Claus tour for the residents of Mylapore. Parents/friends are asked to leave a gift for their loved ones at the office along with their address and Santa Claus shows up at their house to give them the gift. This year too, Santa showed up at the residents’ houses on Dec 20 and 21 and handed over the gifts much to the delight of the squealing children. Driving around with Christopher and Richard as musicians, Naren dressed as Santa Claus carried gifts to the children in the Mylapore area. Plum cakes sponsored by Padmashri Foods, C. I. T Colony were also distributed to the children. A quick stopover made by Santa made on the way to one of the residents’ house got an overwhelming response. Children crowded around him, sang songs and gave him a tight hug before letting him go. Two year old Rayliah received four gifts from Santa. Her cousins Sanjana and Vetrivel received gifts too. They are residents of Srinivasa Avenue, R. A. Puram. It was a huge surprise for M. P. Sumukhi who resides at Rani Meyammai Towers, R. A. Puram. When Santa knocked on her door, she was literally jumping with joy. Her mother says, “She had no idea at all and was really excited to see Santa with a gift for her”. Six year old M. K. Sangeshwaran and his grandfather welcomed Santa into their homes with a huge smile. They are residents of West Circular Road, Mandaveli. Sai Shree and Adithi.R.K were all dressed up for the occasion. The family resides at Yeses Square, Greenways Road. 5 6 MYLAPORE TIMES December 27, 2014 - January 2, 2015 CHECK THIS OUT SHOPPING HANDLOOM EXHIBITION An exhibition cum sale of Rajasthani tops, children’s dresses, kurta pajamas, bedsheets, banjara and cotton bags, wall hangings, curtains, sarees from Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan, one gram gold jewellery and more is on from Dec 27 - Jan 5. BALACHANDER V I N C E N T D ’ S O U Z A Sabhas have become an integral part of the community, offering music and dance concerts, dramas, religious discourses and cultural events. They have evolved over the last 50-plus years. And they have served a community which has a particular taste for the performing arts. The leading sabhas have done some admirable work over the decades. But the time has come for them to re-look at their position in the community, consider the changing tastes and predilections of the people who patronize them and consider new ways of managing the arts promotion. The annual December Season, which is possibly the biggest season of classical music and dance is just the time for sabhas and their managers to take a good and hard look at what their role is and what sabhas may want to be in the new world. For too long, sabhas have been on auto-mode of yore. A calendar for December that they fill-up with a mixture that they decide is best. It is a calendar that goes on and on and on. With noon and post noon slots for talent which is highly debatable. And a tail which is best reserved for ‘talented’ dancers, some talented and the rest referred to from all quarters. This calendar has run its life long ago. And it does not for too well with the times. It is already failing and the signs of failure are showing this season. Some of the evening concerts had a small audience. Many others stayed home to watch TV-telecast concerts. And the hardcore are frustrated with the box office run-around and the unimpressive concert plans. The time has come to curate a smart, short and engaging festival. And to present and manage it as a festival in the real sense. To do this, we need a new set of curators who work along with sabha managers to draw up a fest schedule, to roll mod-day communication - on and offline and to present it really well not just to Mylapore and Mambalam but to the country and to the world. We must move away from this assumption that we are hosting backyard cultural events which will magically attract diehard rasikas. The December Season is unique, has a rich history and a cultural icon. It needs new ideas, fresh blood and a better stage. What do you think? The funeral procession One of India’s well known film makers, K. Balachander passed away on December 23 evening from age-related problems. He was 84 and was a longtime resident of Warren Road having shifted here from Gopalapuram. Decorated with India’s highest award for a film maker, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and the Padma Shri, Balachander was an icon known for making films that focussed on middle class south Indian families, their mores and conflicts and on women who had minds of their own but struggled against a conservative community. He made a name for himself by directing Tamil plays while he was still working for the Accountant General’s office - the issues he dealt with here became the talk of all drama enthusiasts. He made his debut as a film director in 1965 with ‘Neerkumizhi’ and worked in the film industry for over five decades - as actor, scriptwriter, director and producer, involved in over 100 films in one capacity or the other. He also made films in Telugu and Hindi, with Ek Dhuje ke Liye being a big hit ( it was a remake of his Telugu film hit, Maro Charitra). KB, as he was popularly known, moulded the careers of many actors the famed among them being Kamalhassan and Rajinikant, Sujatha and Nagesh, Manorama, Vivek and Prakash Raj and many others. He was a hard task master, a no-nonsense man at work. He was also known for not being taken in by the stars; he did well in an era ruled by actors MGR and Sivaji Ganesan. From Avargal and Aval Oru Thodarkathai to Sindhu Bhairavi and Manmadha Leelai, Balachander’s films looked at middle class Indians - their frailties, orthodoxies and contradictions. And women were at the core. He also headed Kavithalaya, his production house which made films and TV serials. Jannal and Anni were some of the long-running serials. He worked on serials to cater to a larger audience. In August, his son Kailasam who ran his own production company passed away suddenly and this seems to have affected him. He is bereaved by his wife, a daughter and a son. The entire film community and fans paid their respects at the KB residence and later took part in the funeral procession on Wednesday evening. The cremation was held at the Besant Nagar crematorium. 7 8 Dec 27 - Jan 2, 2015 MYLAPORE TIMES ▲ ll llINCLUDING Material and Labour Asian Paint (Above 30 years) Tractor Distemper 2.10 paise Emulsion 3.00 per sq.ft. It is the time when family members come together to enjoy a special meal and to pray, share and bond. On Thursday last, we visited four families in the San Thome area to find out what was cooking for Christmas: For Immanuel Arokiaswamy and his family, the celebrations start early every year. Immanuel’s wife Mary Rose says, “During the first week of December, we start decorating our house and the tree”. The day before Christmas, family and friends attend the night Mass at San Thome Cathedral. Mary Rose says, “30 friends came over to my home after the Mass this year. We said a small prayer and then cut a chocolate cake. We had a small midnight snack party.” Rose had made lamb leg gravy, idiappam, chicken and pork sausages, chicken 65 and beef sticks. The family assembled in the morning to have a sumptuous breakfast. “For breakfast we made idli and mutton curry. This is a traditional dish for us and we have been making this dish on Christmas morning for over 15 years”, adds Mary. The family resides at Lyn Pereira Street, San Thome. J. Mohan and his family start their Christmas celebrations by hanging a star on their doorstep in the first week of December. They then decorate their tree and set up a crib. Mohan’s wife, Rosita says, “On Dec 24, every year, we go to homes of our families and friends to distribute snacks. We also invite them home on Christmas day . . . to see our crib.” This year the Mohans shared murukku, a sweet made out of banana, coconut barfi, milk peda and cakes - with 15 families. After attending the night Mass at San Thome Cathedral, they cut a cake at home. In the morning a lavish spread awaits them all. Rosita says she got up at 4.30 a.m. to prepare idli, appam, dosa, chicken curry and kurma for breakfast followed by mutton biriyani for lunch. The family resides at San Thome High Road, San Thome. Vimala Padmaraj and her daughter make time in mid-December to make cookies and dry snacks. Rose cookies are their best, the menu handed over generations! The breakfast curries are prepared late on Christmas eve to make things easy on the festival day. As in many homes, mutton curry and idiappam dominate the breakfast menu, sausages are also on the table. Vimala decided to make a dry pork dish for lunch - she ordered for the meat at a city store that gets the meat from Bangalore. There was also biryani and salads. Vimala loves cooking traditional dishes and with her daughter by her side, does not mind the effort it calls for. “Some traditions are great to follow. Food for Christmas is one such,” says this resident of Leith Castle Centre Street The Naveen family who live in the Leith Castle South Street had decorated their house with a star, a Christmas tree and a large crib. The lunch here was a big spread mutton biryani, dry prawns and chicken 65. They had ten people dining at lunchtime and expected ten more for dinner. “We stuck to making the food we know best but we had to cook more to host the guests,” said Naveen. Food is big at festival time. These families, like many others seem to have enjoyed the cooking and hosting guests at the table. The Naveens Vimala Padmaraj with the dishes she cooked for lunch December 27, 2014 - January 2, 2015 MYLAPORE TIMES Cooptex recently launched a new range of Kolam silk sarees. The sarees which come from Coimbatore and Kanchipuram have beautiful pulli kolam designs on the entire saree. Priced at Rs. 5000 - 6000 after discount (30%), these sarees come in a variety of colours. Check out the store at 11, Luz Church Road, Mylapore. Ph: 24671347. Take your kids on a margazhi procession Here is a small aside for the ‘season’. Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation invites children to join the 13th Bala Vidhwan Bhavani on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014 from 6.00am to 8.00am. The Mylapore Trio who hosts this event say that in keeping with the mragazhi tradition, they will coax the children “to feel the divine experience of bhakthi in this spiritual walk.” The procession starts from Mylapore’s Sri Kapaleeswarar Temple (near theradi), goes around the mada streets - with the children singing bhajans and namavalis. The Trio want children who wish to take part to be dressed in traditional South Indian attire. Participation certificates will be given to all children who attend this event. Interested people may call and register at: 9382698811, 9381038385. R. R. Sabha gets back on track This is a sabha that is resurrecting itself after a long time in a freezer. Rasika Ranjani Sabha in Mylapore which has a great place in the history of the performing arts in this city went off the map when a severe crisis inside the core management team struck it. We learn that the issues have been settled and a new team is charting its new course - making sure the big complex being built in Mylapore is completed in 2015. The team hopes to open one auditorium by May 2015. This season, it held its festival early - at the auditorium in P. S. School, Mylapore. The fest was well organized too. R. R. Sabha will hopefully host the season fest at its own campus in December 2015. A book “Swami Vireswarananda - A Divine Life”, was released on Dec 21 at Ramakrishna Math, Mylapore. The book was written and released by the Swami’s devotees and disciples. A direct disciple of Sri Sarada Devi, the Swami was the Sangha guru for 19 years before he passed away in 1984 at the age of 97. 13 14 MYLAPORE TIMES December 27, 2014 - January 2, 2015 December 27, 2014 - January 2, 2015 MYLAPORE TIMES LIFESTYLE SHOP FOR NUTS, SPICES AND FOODSTUFF AT R.
