Our Lady of Providence had an amazing
Catholic Schools Week! Our Open House was very
successful. Prospective parents and students were
introduced to teachers and staff in addition to touring
our wonderful school. Visitors were able to see
Smart Boards and other technology in action. We
cannot wait to welcome new students into our OLOP
family. Although our week was shortened due to the
snowy weather, we were able to see our students’
Catholic and school spirit shining. It was an
incredible week!
On Super Bowl Sunday, February 1st, the
National Junior Honor Society, along with Mrs.
Barbara Garcia and Miss Patty Ryan, took the Long
Beach Polar Bear Plunge to raise funds for the Make
a Wish Foundation. Brrrr! We are very proud of all
of them. They were able to raise $585.00 for this
charitable foundation. Way to go!!
Thanks all parishioners for your weekly support!

Saint John of God Religious Education
Touching Hearts ~ Changing Lives
The Office of Religious Education is closed and there are no classes during the week of February Break. We will re-open on
Monday, February 23 at 11:00am.
Exciting things are happening in Religious Education!
Lenten Bible Study: The Passion Narratives: Enrich your spiritual journey this Lent in a Wednesday evening Bible Study
Group. Maggie Martin (631-234-4040) will lead this discussion on the Passion Narratives beginning at 6:30pm on the following
4 Wednesdays: February 25, March 4, March 18 & March 25. This informal group will meet in the Chapel. Please come prepared for discussion by reading the Gospel Passages while reflecting on the Questions for Discussion.
What does each of the four Evangelists STRESS the most in the Passion narrative?
• Mark: the suffering of J esus, how he was tr agically r ejected, unfair ly condemned, viciously beaten, hor r ibly insulted,
and cruelly mistreated by multiple groups
• Matthew: the kingship of J esus, how the de-facto ruling powers (i.e. Pilate & Caiaphas) conspired to get rid of someone
they saw as a political threat
• Luke: the innocence of J esus, how Pilate said he did not deser ve death, and other s (Her od Antipas, centur ion, r e
pentant thief) also recognized his innocence
• John: the exaltation of J esus, how he r emains in char ge, dr iving the all action, completing the will of the Father , and
being glorified as he is lifted up.
Wednesday, February 25:
The Last Supper and the Agony in the Garden
Read Matt 26:20-56, Mark 14:17-52, Luke 22:14-53, John 13:1-38/18:1-12
Questions for Discussion:
• Where are you now on your faith journey? Hopefully you made time this week to sit quietly and reflect on the Gospel
passages. What did that experience mean to you? Are you ready to walk to Way of the Cross with our Lord?
• The Gospels of Matthew, Mark & Luke are referred to as the Synoptic Gospels because they can be compared column by
column with each other. What is common to all 3 accounts of the Last Supper? What is in the Synoptic accounts of the Last
Supper and NOT in the Gospel of John?
• How is Peter’s denial placed differently in Luke’s account?
• In John’s Gospel, Jesus’ Last Supper is not a Passover Meal. Why is this significant? Also in Johns Gospel, Jesus washes
the feet of all of his disciples. Then he tells them, “I have given you an example that you also should do as I have done to
you.” How does this speak to you?
• Who is with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemene? How does Judas identify Jesus in the garden? How do the Synoptic
accounts differ from the Gospel of John?
• What observations can you make about the betrayal of Judas and the arrest?
• What other observations would you like to bring to the discussion?

4 PASOS: LEER, MEDITAR, ORAR, CONTEMPLAR
Lectio Divina: is a form of prayer using Sacred Scripture. It is a four step
process, using Scripture as its basis to get to know our Lord in a more profound
way. It is a process that was developed by St. Benedict and can be used in
individual prayer or in a group.
4 STEPS: READ, MEDITATE, PRAY, CONTEMPLATE
MAY WANT TO BEGIN WITH A PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT:
Come Holy Spirit, illuminate my mind, open my heart so I can
encounter in your Word Christ, the Way, the Truth, and the
Life…..Help me follow today, the call of Christ in a new way,
according to your word. And let me be for all in the world, one who is
sent by the Lord, let me be a brother/sister, let me be a friend, let me
be a disciple of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
Step 1: READ: What does the Biblical Text Say?
At the most basic level:
What is going on in this Scriptural passage? You have to identify a WORD,
PHRASE, IDEA that touches your heart….that the Lord places in your heart…..
FIRST READING: read the text out loud slowly and intentionally.
REFLECTION: take several minutes to reflect on the reading and allow
the Holy Spirit to surface a WORD, A PHRASE, AN IDEA/CONCEPT that is
central to the meaning of the text for you (What is the Biblical text saying?).
INTERNALIZE: repeat the word or phrase either out loud or in your
heart.
Step 2: MEDITATE:
What is Jesus saying to me personally through this
Scripture Text? What does God want me to know or see through this Scripture
Text. How does this text speak to my experience in life?
SECOND READING: read the same passage again.
MEDITATION: take several minutes to reflect on the question: What is
Jesus saying to me personally through this Scripture Text?
Step 3: PRAY: My Lord has spoken to me in the Scriptural Text:
What do I
want to say back to him in Prayer?
THIRD READING: may want to re-read the same passage again.
REFLECTION: Jesus has spoken to me personally in this Scriptural text.
What do I want to say to my Lord in Prayer?
PRAYER: say your prayer to our Lord either out loud or interiorly.
Step 4: CONTEMPLATE / ACT:
As a result of my prayer, what is Jesus
calling me to DO (this week) as a result of this process? Finally, our prayer calls
us to action ultimately to be more compassionate and faithful.
CONTEMPLATE: on what our Lord is calling you to do as a result of this
process.
