Associated events
Ocean Business has become
a focal point for the industry
with many organisations looking
to hold associated meetings
alongside. Already confirmed
are meetings hosted by the
Canadian High Commission,
The Hydrographic Society UK
AGM and the following events:
Tuesday 14 April
Blue Economy – Bridging the Gap
9.30 – 5.00pm Lecture Theatre
A joint Federation of Surveyors (FIG) and
International Hydrographic Organisation
(IHO) seminar aimed at setting a forward
strategy for the ‘Blue Economy – Bridging
the Gap’ and looking at the combined
views of industry, governmental and
non-governmental organisations. As more
demand is made of the resources along our
coasts, in and below the oceans, we need
to understand how we all can gain sustained
benefits from the seas. Commercial
companies together with stakeholders and
coastal communities can develop their
approach and strategy to develop well
managed operations and activities that
will sustain economic benefits.
Recent advances in ocean circulation
modelling workshop
10.00 - 12.00 noon Seminar Room, NOC
The NOC has completed a 30 year
simulation of the global ocean at a resolution
of 1/12º and many of the outputs are now
online. This workshop consists of short
presentations covering online availability of
the data, technical aspects of the model, its
verification, future development, examples
of circulation fields and their analysis,
followed by an informal demonstration
session. The Arctic Ocean circulation and its
sea-ice is a particular strength of the model
and attention will be paid to performance
and potential applications.
IMarEST: Gender diversity
in the marine sector
3.00 – 5.00pm Room G1, 6th Floor, NOC
The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science
& Technology will be holding a panel session
followed by discussions on key topics
affecting gender diversity in the marine
sector. The aim of the event is to bring
greater emphasis to issues surrounding
gender diversity in the sector and to enable
ideas and thoughts to be shared. This is an
opportunity to network with marine
professionals who, like the IMarEST, are
keen to see better balance within the sector
and to positively influence early careerists
and students.

Thursday 16 April
Engaging with a research organisation
for R&D support
9.30 -11.00am Seminar Room, NOC
Whether it's engaging with the NOC as
a research partner, or accessing new
knowledge for your company, their extensive
expertise and facilities can help you access
new market opportunities. The NOC is
seeking to engage with business to apply
its leading research thinking into positive
socio-economic impact, and with supporting
funds available from UK and EC sources,
there has never been a better time.
Special session on wave and tidal energy
12.00 noon onwards Seminar Room, NOC
Exploitation of wave and tidal resources
for energy generation requires a good
understanding of the resources, and it has
been necessary to adapt and develop
existing technologies to achieve this. It is
essential to characterise environmental
receptors across all wildlife groups and to
capture adequate baseline information for
EIA and monitoring. This session will review
the contribution to the development of
technology and tools from NERC – DEFRA
funded research and knowledge exchange
programmes and consider the needs for the
sector going forward.
