Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time
February 15, 2015
As we gather on this last Sunday before Lent, we are challenged by
Saint Paul to do everything for the glory of God. Further, he urges us
to work for the common good rather than our own. What valuable lessons for us and for our country! Today, perhaps our prayer can be for
such selflessness to be the fruit of our coming Lenten season.

Dear Friends,
Interesting readings for this
weekend, don’t you agree? The
scourge of leprosy surfaces in our
first reading and Gospel. Moses
explains the precautions that should
take place, including that the person
live outside the camp. A leper comes
to Jesus; Jesus actually touches the leper and, of
course, heals him immediately!
Would you physically touch a leper? There is
the story of Saint Francis of Assisi, who was repulsed
by leprosy, meeting a leper on one of his journeys.
At first he turned away but by God’s grace he turned
back and kissed the leper and helped him out. It was
a major moment of grace in Francis’ life.
How about someone not with Hansen’s
Disease (leprosy) but someone who is like a leper to
your way of thinking? Are there certain types of
people, certain classes of people, certain personalities
which you find offensive? Someone once opined that
we all love humanity, it’s just people we have trouble
with…
The point of the Gospel, I believe, is that Jesus
has come in search of us. Each of us has something
or multiple things in our lives that afflict us like
leprosy. Jesus is here to heal us, to forgive us, to set
us free. But like the leper in the Gospel story, we
need to come to Jesus, we need to recognize that we
are in need of His healing and help, we need to
humbly ask Jesus ourselves, Lord, “If you wish, you
can make me clean.” And you know what? We will
hear Jesus say the same words which that leper
heard on a dusty road in the Israel, “I do will it. Be
made clean.”
My dear friends, the holy season of Lent is fast
approaching. It is traditionally a season of penitence,
prayer and almsgiving. But we don’t need to wait
until Ash Wednesday to seek the Lord with all our
heart. He is here with us now. Turn to Him and
make the leper’s words your own and let your soul
experience His great power of healing and help.
Jesus waits for us, why do we hold back? Let’s run
into His arms. He will heal us and set us free!
This year as Lent begins,
instead of giving up
chocolate or coffee, give God
your time. Choose a CD/
book/booklet from our Resource display for
each week of Lent. While this entails a small
sacrifice of your time to listen or read, it will
yield rich fruit as you deepen your awareness
of God’s love. And don’t forget to share with
others! Thank you for your generous donations that help to support the mission of
Stewardship: A Mission of Faith and
Lighthouse Catholic Media to
“feed hungry hearts”.
Operation Rice Bowl
Rice Bowls will be available on the tables at
the doors of the church. Now in its 40th year,
this faith formation program highlights the
beauty of the traditional Lenten practices of
prayer, fasting and almsgiving and encourages
us to live out the spirit of Lent fully. The
contributions made during Lent through CRS
Rice Bowl support Catholic Relief Services’
development projects around the globe. 25% of
all funds collected remain here in the
Archdiocese and are used to purchase food to
stock local emergency food cupboards and soup
kitchens. It is a real blessing during these tough
times for so many of our hungry neighbors.
You may make a one-time donation in the
second collection on March 14/15 or utilize your
Rice Bowl all during Lent and drop it in the
baskets that will be available for on Holy
Thursday.
God bless you, God love you,

The Divine Mercy Theme for the
month of February is Love.
From St. Faustina’s Diary:
“And God has given me to understand
that there is but one thing that is of
infinite value in His eyes, and that is
love of God; love, love, and once again
love, and nothing can compare with a single
act of pure love of God. Oh, with what
inconceivable favors God gifts a soul that loves
him sincerely.” (778)
If you would like to know about the
Divine Mercy Chaplet is, please come and join
us every Thursday at 7:00 PM in Our Lady
Chapel. Call Gerry at 610-454-7984.
At the request of Archbishop Chaput, we are
sharing information regarding the launch of
a website centered around the "Faith in the
Public Square" colloquium held in Toronto
this past August. The series explored many
of the challenging questions that pervade our society
and included addresses on the topic of how faith and
society are understood today as well as a panel
discussion on the future of faith in the public square.
In addition to Archbishop Chaput, keynote speakers
included Cardinal Thomas Collins, Archbishop of
Toronto, and Dale Ahlquist, President of the American
Chesterton Society. The website, which contains video
of each address, can be found here: http://

In order to help us prepare for the World Meeting of
Families and the anticipated visit from Pope Francis,
a catechism on family life entitled, Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive, has been prepared.
Each month, our parish will reflect on one chapter
from this catechism. You can order a copy of this
beautifully illustrated catechism and learn about the
World Meeting of Families at WorldMeeting2015.org.
Chapter 4: Two Become One Our first three
chapters reviewed basic Christian faith. We saw
how confidence in Jesus opens the door to faith,
enabling us to know God and what God has done
in history. God creates male and female in his
image, and makes a covenant with Israel and the
Church. God is faithful to his promises, even when
we sin. Because God loved us in this way, we
spend our lives trying to return our love to God and
share it with our neighbor. In this month’s chapter
and in the chapters to come, we will study the implications of these doctrines for marriage and the
family. When husband and wife promise to love
each other as God loves us all, they make a commitment to love not only romantically, but also with
mercy and forgiveness. Our culture sometimes
teaches us to think of marriage as a negotiable
contract between two individuals who happen to
feel sexual chemistry. This view of love is a recipe
for instability, since it is still premised on individualism and the waxing and waning of romantic feelings. The Church’s alternative account of love
enables us to transcend the culture of individualism
and become who we were created to be. Founded
on Christ, sustained in the sacraments, Catholic
marriage builds humility and self-sacrifice into the
dynamic between male and female. As this month’s
chapter explains in more detail, sacramental
marriage creates intimate communion even in
times of suffering and hardship. “Love is our
mission,” as our catechism’s title declares, because
Christ’s love frees us from false, shrunken
accounts of love and makes us fully alive.

everyone, whether you are married, single,
celibate, or consecrated! Talk topics include
marriage, parenting, grandparenting, celibacy,

Consultation of the Clergy and Faithful for the 2015
Synod of Bishops in Rome
Pope Francis has called for an Ordinary Synod of
Bishops in October 2015 on the theme, The Vocation
and Mission of the Family in the Church and Contemporary World. The General Secretary of the Synod
of Bishops, following a practice that typically anticipates every Synod, invites consultation on this topic to
assist with its preparations. A Preparatory Document
has been issued by the Holy See to initiate this consultation along with a series of questions. Archbishop
Chaput, in an effort to provide an opportunity for the
clergy and faithful of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia
to engage in this consultation in as wide a manner as
possible has authorized the use of this instrument for
local participation. The clergy and faithful are asked to
read the complete Preparatory Document, or its summary, on the archdiocesan website and then answer any
or all of the questions that follow by visiting
www.archphila.org.

Office of the Archbishop
Archdiocese of Philadelphia
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
After the devastating flood that Noah and his
family experienced, God established a covenant
with them, promising never again to let such
harm come to them. He promised to watch over
them and take care of them through his
Providence. The sign of this covenant was the rainbow that appeared in the sky above them. God is
now again asking you to be a sign of this covenant and providence to his priests who have faithfully served you and your families in the past.
Our priests have cared for you spiritually, and
many times physically and emotionally, through
their ministries in parishes, schools, hospitals and
many other areas of your lives. Many of them
have gone to their reward with God, but there are
still many more who need your help. They are in
retirement or are unable to minister actively
because of physical ailments. Villa St. Joseph in
Darby, PA and Regina Coeli in Warminster, PA
provide happy homes for all our retired priests.
Other nursing facilities throughout the
Archdiocese provide for those with special needs.
At this time in their lives they depend on your
prayerful and financial support to meet their
needs.
Our annual 2015 Collection for the Care of Aging and Infirm Priests of the Archdiocese will be
taken up on the weekend of February 21 and 22,
2015, throughout the Archdiocese of
Philadelphia. You have always been so faithful
and generous to them in the past and we are
deeply grateful to you. Through your love and
gratitude, God will continue to watch over them
and care for them for their remaining days. You
are in their daily Mass intentions and prayers,
and we ask you to remember them in yours.
Gratefully and with best wishes in Christ,
+Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput,
O.F.M. Cap.
Archbishop of Philadelphia

February 18, 2015, on all the Fridays of Lent and
Good Friday. Further, all persons eighteen years of
age and older, up to and including their fifty-ninth
birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves
to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on
Good Friday, while the other two meals on those
days are to be light. All the faithful are
encouraged, when possible, to participate at Mass
and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to
celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance,
to undertake spiritual reading, especially the
study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate
in parish Lenten devotions as well as Lenten
education programs. Adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament is especially recommended. All are
encouraged to participate in Operation Rice Bowl
which has aided countless hungry persons here in
the Archdiocese as well as throughout our nation
and our world.
Correction: The correct time for
Stations of the Cross on Wednesday
afternoons is 2PM, not 1:45 as
printed in your Lenten folders. We
will also be having Stations of the
Cross on Fridays of Lent at 7 PM.
