Page 3 February 22, 2015 PASTOR’S REFLECTION First Sunday of Lent February 22, 2015 Dear Friends, As we begin the season of Lent we are called to take a look at our lives and how it is that we respond to God’s call to be holy. Acts of penance and self denial mean absolutely nothing unless they are the vehicles to help us change to be more like Jesus. • As we look at what to do this Lent...look not only to what you will “give up,” rather look at what to do in order to bring about a “Christ-like” change. As you reflect on God’s Word, may He strengthen you with His peace. May the good Lord bless you and your dear family abundantly each day. Please pray for me. In Christ, Msgr. Pablo A. Navarro PPI PRESENTATION BY MSGR. NAVARRO “HEALING THE WOUNDS OF ANGER AND VIOLENCE” Tuesday March 3, 7:29 PM AE-102-103 We live with such stress each day that coping often becomes difficult. How do we allow the Spirit of God to heal us? How can we open ourselves to receive and remain in Christ’s peace… in the midst of all the craziness around us? MARK YOUR CALENDARS!! Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks for a reason for your hope. 1 Peter 3:15 Fasting Fasting is a great spiritual discipline, one that can bear much fruit. For Catholics, there are only two days each year where fasting is required. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are bound to observe the fast. On fast days, one full meatless meal may be taken, and two other smaller meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength according to one’s needs. Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics over 14 years of age on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent including Good Friday. Fasting is an ancient practice and very clearly taught in Scripture. In Matthew 6; 16-18, Jesus tells his disciples, “When you fast…” and tells them not to be showy about it. And in Luke 9:23, Jesus says, “If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” Fasting is simply a way of denying ourselves. It is meant to bring our hearts and minds closer to God. When we feel those pangs of hunger, we turn to God in prayer and ask for the strength to carry on. And we offer up our small sufferings to unite with the sufferings of Christ. JUSTICE CORNER Lenten Traditions Today’s readings show us the lengths to which God will go to save us. He established a Covenant with Noah, sent Jesus to pay for our sins, and protects us from being overcome by temptations. He has a tradition of coming to our aid! Lent is a time to reflect on the temptations we face and develop strategies for overcoming them. We are more likely to succeed if our actions have a social dimension. One temptation we all face is “busyness”. Too often our lives become so hectic that we have no time to think of others. Catholic Relief Services’ Rice Bowl program teaches prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. This Lent, consider adopting a new tradition. Visit www.crsricebowl.org to find meatless recipes from countries around the world. Then prepare these recipes as a family and take a virtual tour of life in that country. Place the money you save by eating a meatless dinner in the rice bowl. By the end of Lent you’ll be able to make a special donation to help people around the world.
