` KHANYISA SECONDARY SCHOOL 2015 PROCEDURES learning to care, do and achieve 1 October 2014 Dear Khanyisa Parent If you are a new parent who is sending a child to Khanyisa for the first time – welcome! We hope that your association with Khanyisa is long and fruitful for your child and your family. To parents who already have children at Khanyisa - thank you for your faith in the school and we look forward to our continued involvement with you. The past year has taught us a number of lessons. One of the lessons that we are constantly relearning has got to do with parent involvement in their children’s education. Khanyisa offers its learners a wide range of opportunities, other than those in the classroom. All our learners take part in the afternoon activity programme. Organised sport, cultural organisations, outreach activities and academic Olympiads all contribute to a varied menu of activities that learners can select from. Many of these activities involve inter-school competitions and activities. It has been sad to note, over the past years, how few parents support their children in the activities that they take part and compete in. Research that has been conducted all over the world as well as in South Africa clearly shows that children who have parents that show an active interest in their educational activities, inevitably do significantly better than children whose parents are not actively involved in their education. You have chosen to send your child to Khanyisa, and we undertake to offer your child a wide variety of opportunities and high quality tuition. We would in turn like to encourage you, our parent body, to become actively involved in the activities of Khanyisa. We can guarantee you that your child will be the one who benefits most. Who knows you may even witness skills and talents in your child that you did not even know existed. We look forward to a busy 2015 with large-scale parent involvement. May I wish you all a relaxing and safe festive season with your family and friends and every success in the year 2015. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me. Yours sincerely Mr C Thurston Director of Secondary Education 2 SECONDARY SCHOOL PROCEDURES 2015 1. ADMINISTRATION The Secondary School is administered from the Secondary School Administration Building. Please do not hesitate to contact the Director of Secondary Education or Teachers, if you have any queries or problems. The Bursar's office is located in the General Administration building of Khanyisa Education Centre. If you have any questions about your account, please contact Mr Musasa during working hours. Fees must be paid directly into the school account at the bank. 2. TUITION FEES AND OTHER CHARGES Tuition Fees Khanyisa is an independent school, which depends on school fees to operate. At the moment Khanyisa Education Centre receives a very small subsidy from government for Grade 1 to Grade 12 learners. This small subsidy makes up less than 4% of the annual Khanyisa budget. It is therefore vital that school fees are paid on time and in full for the Centre to operate effectively. 2015 BASIC TUITION FEE: Grade 7 – R2307.00; Grade 8 – R2400.00; Grade 9 – R2542.00 Grade 10 – R2655.00; Grade 11 – R2815.00; Grade 12 – R2871.00 monthly for 12 months. Payments for the year 2015 must start at the end of November 2014. If you wish to pay your whole term's fee in advance, you will receive a 5% discount. However, you must inform the school that you are taking this option, otherwise it will be assumed that you are paying monthly. Fees must be paid directly into the school's bank account. Our banking details are as follows: BANK: First National Bank - Giyani Branch (260649) ACCOUNT No: Khanyisa Fee Account - 54850085514 NO LEARNER WILL BE ADMITTED TO CLASS AT THE START OF THE YEAR 2015 UNLESS THE FIRST TWO FEE PAYMENTS HAVE BEEN PAID IN FULL. PLEASE BUDGET NOW. The office will be open from Monday 5 January 2014, for queries. Parents must, however, pay fees directly into the Centre’s bank account. Please keep your deposit slip in case of a query. Please make absolutely certain that your correct Khanyisa fee account number appears on the deposit slip when you make the deposit. Parents are advised that additional payments will be requested during the year to cover the cost of field trips, stationery, afternoon activities, transport to school events, the school magazine and text books. Stationery & Printing A charge of R704.00 per learner is added to the February fee account for stationery, printing, a school diary and the school magazine. Learners are supplied with basic stationery throughout the year. This includes a school homework diary, all exercise books, files, paper and photocopied notes. Pens, pencils, rulers, Maths instruments etc. are not supplied. Parents must please purchase these items for their children. The school makes no profit from the sale of stationery, in fact with the high cost of photocopying and printing the stationery charge does not cover the cost fully. In addition to stationery the school also supplies all families with an annual magazine showing all activities and highlights of the Centre for the past year. Once again this cost does not cover the full price of the production of the magazine. Khanyisa secures sponsorship to cover these costs to minimize the eventual cost to the parents. Textbooks All learners in the Secondary School are issued with the textbooks they will require for the year. These books remain the property of Khanyisa Education Centre. To cover the cost of these books and to again reduce the expense to the parents an annual levy of R278.00 per Secondary School learner, which amounts to about one quarter of the cost of the books, is charged per learner. The intention is that books will be replaced once every four to five years to ensure that the learners have books that are serviceable to use. This once off textbook levy will be added to the February fee account. 3 Transport to School Events Various school events take place during the course of the year. Some of these events take place in surrounding towns and the cost of transporting Khanyisa learners to such events must be covered by the learners’ parents. We would like to encourage our parent body to become involved in transporting their own children to such events. This would reduce transport costs and enable the parents to see their own children performing in such events. Trips Opportunities do arise for learners to go on overnight educational trips. Some trips last 4 - 5 days. Trips are regarded as an integral part of the wider curriculum. Trips are compulsory and learners are encouraged to make the most of the opportunities provided. The cost of the trips will be published well in advance and the arrangements for payment will be communicated to parents early next year. 3. THE SCHOOL DAY Timetable Children should be at school no later than 07h20. The first lesson starts at 07h30. The daily programme involving all learners continues until 15h10 on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. On Wednesdays the programme finishes at 15h00 and on Friday the school day ends at 13h30. Breaks of 20 minutes each take place from 10h30 to 10h50 and 13h05 to 13h30 daily. Lunch A school tuck shop service operates at the school. The tuck shop sells certain items of food, cold drinks and sweets. Please ensure that your child has a good breakfast before coming to school and that they are given a packed lunch for later in the day. It is very difficult for children to concentrate properly or to give of their best if they are hungry. Transport A variety of buses and taxi’s operate to Khanyisa from Giyani and Malamulele. It is the responsibility of the parents to ensure that adequate transport is provided for their children to get to school and that they are on time. Homework Although there are some organised homework sessions at school during the week, this is not enough time for learners to do all the work they are set. Please help your child to develop a routine for doing homework. It is very seldom that there is no homework set. If your child finishes homework early or has none at all, they can always revise work done earlier in the year to keep this fresh or they can read a library book. As a rough guide, Grd 7, 8 and 9 learners should spend about one and a half hours doing homework each day; Grd 10 and Grd 11 learners should spend two hours on homework and Grd 12 learners need between two and three hours. We often find that learners are over-tired through lack of sleep. The reason for this is usually that they have been allowed to watch late night television so they do not get enough sleep. This then affects their performance in the classroom. May we urge you to ensure that your child has a good night's sleep. Absence From School If a child is too ill to attend school on a particular day, they must bring a note signed by their parents on the day they return. Parents are requested to inform the school by means of a phone call if their child is absent from school due to illness on a given day. Absence for other reasons is not encouraged and is only granted with the express permission of the Director of Secondary Education. Parents should phone or write to the Director of Secondary Education in such cases. Learners who are absent from school without good reason are considered to have bunked and will be dealt with accordingly. 4. PARENT CONSULTATIONS While parents are encouraged to contact teachers at any time concerning the progress of their children, there are three organised functions a year when all teachers are available at the same time. These are referred to as Parent Consultations and take place at the end of the first, second and third terms. Dates will be announced later. Parents are encouraged to attend. 4 5. REPORTS At the end of the second and fourth terms, written reports are compiled on each learner. These reports contain comprehensive comments from the class mentors and Director of Secondary Education. New learners also receive a brief written report at the end of the first term. Grade 12 learners receive a September report after the Trial Exams have been completed. 6. UNIFORM 1.
