FROM THE OFFICE EDITORIAL In this age of computers, iPads and PlayStations as well as a big range of other electronic devices, I know many parents/grandparents get frustrated that their children just don’t go out and play anymore or do the things that we used to do when electronic devices where just a dream. I have just returned from a fantastic week in Akaroa, where I took four of my grandchildren. We try and go there every year, as I did when I was their age, as it has so many great things to do and is only a short drive from Christchurch if we need to get home. As the grandchildren have become older and we have let them do more things for themselves, we found that this last holiday was the best we have ever had. Addicted to computer games as most children are these days, on the first day they said they were bored. Is swimming, fishing and exploring the only thing they were going to do on holiday?. Well, by the second day we just couldn’t get them out of the water. We travelled around the various other bays such as Tikao, Le Bon’s and Okains where the settings were just magical and the kids just loved it. They swam out to the pontoon located just off the beach in Akaroa, which is almost a right of passage as you get older and at night we fished off the Akaroa Wharf. They did and enjoyed all the things that I had done all those years ago and never missed the computer or TV (well that’s my story anyway). It was heartening to see that kids can still have a great time without technology and that they still really enjoy the simple things and nothing beats spending time together. Having said that, it was still great first thing in the morning and late at night having a Play Station there to keep them occupied when it was too early or late to swim or fish. Yes it’s been one of those summers so far that we can sit back and enjoy. In fact I see there has been more rain affected days for cricket in Australia this summer than in New Zealand which must be some kind of record, as is the Black Caps winning ways also. I see that madness still prevails in the Middle East as people are terrorised more and more by these religious fanatics and that more hostages have been murdered in the name of Allah. It’s sickening to see the hostages kneeling in their orange overalls in front of a black shrouded murderer who sounds like he should be working on the London Underground rather than about to behead innocent men. It’s a sick world that we live in and sometimes it’s nice to live way down here in New Zealand away from some of the crazy things that are happening overseas. Mind you Sydney is just in the West Island and they had their share of madness recently, so I suppose it can happen anywhere. Anyway lets get into 2015, seeing that we have had a great summer and the kids are now back at school and the last of the sand has been washed out of the clothes. Try and let them on the computer a bit less and do something old school with them I bet that they will love I and if not just turn on the computer!!!! It will be a great night and I look forward to seeing all our youth out there. The rest of the term includes Cricket, Snooker and Hockey. Please feel free to contact me should you have any queries. BASED IN NELSON 5 – 18 YEARS OLDS Hi All I am going to keep this short and sweet. What more can I say than, what a fantastic summer we have had and long may it continue!!! Here in Nelson we are about to start back into our weekly club sessions with lots of fun events planned as can be seen on our term schedule below. As always we are looking for eager volunteers with some youngsters coming on board from Nelson Girls College. This is as a result of two students setting up a volunteer organisation within their campus which enables the girls to put up their hand to help so many worthwhile causes – it is a fantastic initiative and I think should be a part of every secondary school. 12 February 19 February 28 February 5 March 12 March 19 March 26 March 2 April Canoeing Wind Karting TBC Cycling Disc Golf Kelly Sports Swimming Fun Fear Factor Boat Ramp - Nelson Lower Queen Street TBC Railway Trail Fairfield Park Saxton Field ASB Aquatic Center Table Tennis Pavilion That’s all from me so early in the term any enquiries do not hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or 022 0429074 Smiles and wishing you lots of enjoyment Tracey EVENT RESULTS South Island Para Equestrian Dressage Championships The South Island Para Equestrian Dressage Championships returned for 2015 being held in conjunction with the South Island Festival of Dressage at the National Equestrian Centre, McLeans Island, Christchurch. In the past 2 years the event had not run due to very low numbers competing, however this year we had 6 combinations entered, 4 of which were new combinations. Frances Dick (Nelson) returned after a couple of year’s absence to win the 'Repiling Specialists' Open section on her lovely new ride Weltmeister AF. This combination shows all the qualities of potential future international representation and we will watch with interest as they progress. Runner up was Auckland's Rachel Stock who rode Don Carlo, a horse that will be joining her team after a solid first time out. Anthea Dixon bought out her Paralympic mount Huntingdale Incognito, who also showed solid performances after very limited competition build up in the past year to finish runner up to Frances in both grade 2 classes and will now head north to the Dressage & Para Dressage Nationals in March. For the first time we also included a Novice Section, sponsored by Methven Equine Centre, to cater for new and less experienced combinations. This was well received, and the title went to Jenny Affleck (The Catlins) and her new ride Tigger Who, who were in their 3rd competition together. Runner up was Paule Crawford (Timaru) and Silverton RH who showed some very settled performances. Sadly Anthea Dixon's new mount On Twilight had to be withdrawn after a minor paddock accident prior to the event. The competition was a big success, and we would like to thank those who helped in the running of the event, the South Island Festival of Dressage Committee for having us and all of our sponsors for supporting the event. Canterbury Swimming Championships Canterbury Champs for me was very much a tester meet as it was my first competition since spine surgery in October. The amount of time I spent out of the water definitely showed and I was way off all of my pbs. It was really good just to get back into the water and back into competitive swimming. George Adam who has an intellectual disability competed at Canterbury champs for the first time and achieved 4 pbs out of 5 races which is pretty awesome Jacquie Ruth Hadlee Sports Awards 2015 Congratulations to the finalists in the Anstice and Associates Sportsperson or Team with a Disability of the Year: Athletics Canterbury – Caitlin Dore Canoe Racing New Zealand – Scott Martlew Equestrian – Anthea Dixon Swim Canterbury – Sophie Pascoe CALENDAR OF EVENTS FEBRUARY 17 - 27 18 Feb 20 - 23 22 Feb 24 - 25 21 - 22 28 Feb 28 Feb - 3 March World Disabled Bowls Champs ParaFed Canterbury Athlete Scholarship Meeting TSNZ Nationals Have a Go Surfing NZ Cup 1 Shooting Canterbury Athletics Champs Goalball & Blind Cricket Have a Go Day NSW Open Swimming Championships Wellington MARCH 1-Mar 5 - 7 March 6 - 8 March 21 - 22 March 23 Mar 26 March 28 - 29 28 - 29 March Children’s Day NZ Equestrian Nationals NZ Track & Field Nationals NZ Cup 2 Shooting Lawn Bowls Have a Go Day ParaFed Canterbury AGM Wheelchair Rugby Low Point Nationals South Island Secondary School Athletics Champs Wigram, Christchurch Feilding Wellington Waikato Christchurch Christchurch Waikato Nelson APRIL 10 - 12 April 14 - 17 April 18 - 19 April 30 April - 8 May Halberg Junior Disability Games NZ Open Swimming Championships Lower North Island Boccia Champs Australian Boccia Championships Cambridge Auckland Wellington Sydney Ken Sowden Wheelchair Rugby Cup Auckland Christchurch Chirstchurch Christchurch Timaru Christchurch Sydney MAY 1 - 3 May ParaFed Canterbury would like to thank the support of our Sponsors Join us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ParaFedCanterbury If you have any news or items of interest to our members, Please email [email protected] Come along and check out this amazing free event.
