ARRB is pleased to offer this two day intensive training course, which is based on the Austroads
Guide to Traffic Management, Parts 6, 9 and 10. It incorporates the latest practice in the safe
and efficient design of traffic signal installations. It will suit junior practitioners and graduates,
however more experienced practitioners will find the course an extremely useful refresher.
The workshop presents detailed information and instruction on using the Austroads Guides
including the: collection of design data; geometric elements; signal system and components;
signal face layouts and display sequences; signal phasing; location of signal equipment; traffic
detection and signal controllers. Extensive use of exercises and case studies ensures that trainees
gain experience in preparing display sequences and determining alternate phasing arrangements.
Signal timing, coordination, controller settings and equipment location are also discussed in detail
and examined through group exercises.
Other topics covered include: pavement markings, signs, coordination of traffic signals,
installation checks and maintenance, and special applications including advance warning signals,
emergency vehicle facilities, public transport priority, bicycle facilities, pedestrian facilities,
roundabout metering signals, ramp-metering signals and special intersection treatments.
There is no other similar course available that covers this topic area in the same detail.

David Nash

Dr Rahmi Akcelik

David is a consulting
transport engineer
specialising in traffic
management. He has over
30 years of experience
with VicRoads and its
predecessors, specialising in
traffic engineering, traffic
management and road safety.
Rahmi is an Adjunct Professor in the
Department of Civil Engineering of Monash
University. He has been serving as a member
of the US Transportation Research Board
Committees on Highway Capacity and Quality
of Service, and Traffic Signals Systems since
1984. Dr Akcelik is a leading scientist and
software developer in the area of traffic
management with over 250 technical
publications in his area of expertise.
He was previously the Manager - Road & Traffic
Standards at VicRoads and has made a substantial
contribution to the development of standards and
guidelines for traffic management in Australia,
through his involvement in the Austroads Traffic
Management Review Panel and the Australian
Standards MS-012 committee. David has a
particular interest in developing traffic engineering
skills in the profession.
David lectures at Swinburne University and provides
consulting services to road managers across
the country and overseas. He is Secretary of the
Institute of Transportation Engineers, ANZ Section.
Awards received by Dr Akcelik include the
1999 Clunies Ross National Science and
Technology award for outstanding commitment
and contribution to the application of science
and technology in Australia. He is the author
of ARRB’s popular Research Report No.123
on Traffic Signals published in 1981, and
author of the SIDRA INTERSECTION software
for signalised and unsignalised intersections
and roundabouts. He has conducted over 50
training workshops in many countries around
the world.
