hat does “opportunity”
mean to you as an
artist? I look at new
opportunities as a chance to grow
and do better. If you wait for
opportunities to occur, you will
always be one of the crowd. You
cannot wait for your ship to come in
... you must swim out to it.
Often opportunities are disguised as
hard work and most people don’t
recognize them. (A. Landers)
As an artist in the Society of
Western Canadian Artists,
opportunities are presented to us
daily. We just have to be open to
them. We have great, interesting
and educational programs each
month to inspire us to try new
ideas to move forward with our art.
Our workshops are varied enough
to attract each of us to participate
in an opportunity to learn more and
have fun sharing with fellow artists.
When the student is ready the
teacher will appear!
Take a risk and put your art out
there. Accept the challenge and
opportunity to be seen. I say: “Feel
the fear and do it anyway.” You will
be so proud of yourself and the
confidence you develop will do
more for you and your art than you
can imagine.
We have so many chances to exhibit
our paintings. Start out by being one
of our Featured Artists and then take
advantage of the opportunity to be
juried into Exhibiting Status to give
you opportunities to show your art in
our various of exhibitions. What a
Golden Opportunity! We are so
fortunate to have the Standards and
Exhibition Committees set up to help
and guide us through the process.
If you give yourself a chance your
Self will give you chances.
(Yogi Bhajan)
I was presented with the
opportunity to be your President
last year. Yes, I did realize the hard
work behind the position, but I also

saw beyond that to realize how
much I could learn and grow as an
artist. Your gift of support has
meant so much to me. I appreciate
this chance and I am pleased to be
able to put myself out there in the
Art Community. I am proud to
promote and represent our Society
of Western Canadian Artists as one
of the best opportunities there is
today for an artist to expand and
grow. The support our Society
gives to each and every one of us
artists is incredible. Let us all
accept the challenge to grow and
take advantage of all these
wonderful opportunities.
When one door closes another door
opens; but we so often look so long
and so regretfully upon the closed
door, we do not see the one open
to us. (Alexander Graham Bell)
VOLUNTEERS
URGENT: Treasurer needed
February program review
Unfortunately, no one has stepped
forward to fill the Treasurer position
to date. A volunteer is desperately
needed. The President is unable to
do her tasks while this position
remains unfilled. Steps are being
taken to look for a bookkeeper
outside of the Society which may
incur a significant expense.
However, the Treasurer does have
other responsibilities, and a member
would be preferred. If you can help
or would like more information about
the position, please contact the
President or the Past President.
The February program was a
presentation of Golden Artist
Colours watercolour and acrylic
offerings by the lively Samantha
Williams-Chapelsky. Samples were
sent through the audience while she
described and demonstrated many
of the products, and answered a lot
of technical questions. Even wet
paint and mediums were passed
around the room, which generally
stayed on the palettes and tools,
much to my surprise!
Let’s paint with no regrets.
Greeting committee chair
To improve the golden moment of
opportunity and catch the good that
is within our reach is the great art of
life. (Samuel Johnson)
A chair for the greeting committee is
needed. The chair’s role is to ensure
name tags and member information
is set up properly at the beginning of
each meeting, and to provide
instruction for volunteer greeters.
This is an important role in our
monthly meetings. Contact the
President if you can help.
And as our Wayne Gretzky says
“You miss 100% of the shots you
don’t take.”

WORKSHOPS
This month’s cover artist
Cathy Bible
Cathy Bible is an abstract artist from
Edmonton. Her artistic beginnings
were in oil paintings and primarily
landscapes. She also experimented
with water colour painting. Her
introduction into abstract art has
now allowed her to more freely
express her creative passion.
using acrylics, plaster and mixed
media that allows her to express her
inner emotions. She loves the
freedom to create and the
excitement of discovery as she
manipulates the mediums. Her art
becomes a powerful visual image of
her inspirations.
Cathy’s paintings are never
preconceived. It is the process of
“I have always been an artist, I was
just too much of a perfectionist.
Now I feel like a child
allowed to play and
experiment while having
fun! We should all be
given that opportunity!”
The viewer experiences a
range of emotions and
reactions to Cathy’s
paintings. Each time you
study her work, different
layers of meaning seem
to magically appear.
Cathy’s use of materials
and techniques entices
you to engage with her
in the journey of
reflection and discovery.
Cathy is a member of the
Society of Western
Canadian Artists, Art
Society of Strathcona,
St. Albert Painters Guild
and a supporting
member of the Alberta
Society of Artist. She was
a participant in Whyte
Avenue, Riverbend, and
Strathearn Artwalks,
solicited by Agora
Gallery in New York City
for an exhibition of her
work as well as in a
variety of group and
individual shows.

Every Picture Tells a Story
January 31 to March 31, 2015
Allen Grey Continuing Care Centre
5005 28 Avenue, Edmonton
Every Picture Tells a Story had an
opening reception on February 6.
The Grey Guild volunteers asked
the artists to display additional
artwork during the reception; it
was an opportunity for artists to
tell the story behind their art. Five
of these extra paintings were sold
and over $100 worth of art cards
during the two hour reception.
Two of the 21 paintings in the
Centre Gallery found buyers within
the first few days of the opening.
The show runs until March 28, 2015
and we’ve been offered the
opportunity to switch out the art
after one month. “Every Picture”
artists will be contacted with more
information.

A look at Jury for Status
Jury for Status is an integral part of
SWCA and is embedded in the
Bylaws and Member Status
standards. These documents are
located in your member binder and
online. The Jury for Status process
itself incorporates several important
aspects in fulfilling the mandate of
the Society – “Artists helping artists.”
The Standards Committee seeks to
meet this mandate for each Jury for
Status event with the following:
1) Provide a reasonably timed and
well-managed jury process which
allows for the Society to become
aware of and acknowledge an artist’s
ability and progress.
2) Provide a balanced peer review
with at least three jurists using a
scoring process and comments.
3) Provide training and mentoring to
members who are new to the jury
process at the Associate status level
in how to assess and provide fair and
appropriate assessment of another
artist’s work.
4) Manage and provide opportunities
for qualified members to participate
in Exhibition juries and Jury for
Status events.
The Standards Committee is
updating the Member Status and
Exhibitions Rules documents to
reflect changes resulting from online
processes. Every member is
encouraged to be familiar with these
documents.

Field and Feathers:
Changing Perspective
A solo show featuring the paintings
of Marjorie Thomson, SWCA, EAC
Jan 23 to Mar 27, 2015
ATB Gallery, ATB Place
10025 Jasper Ave, Edmonton, AB
This show is a combination of old
and new. My perspective is changing
from the panoramic landscape to the
specifics of birds that live in the
landscapes. Wildlife art is a
challenging painting genre but that,
too, is what attracts me. It opens the
door for me to learn new skills and
push myself to improve, change,
develop and grow as an artist. In the
end, that is really what matters.
