MASS INTENTIONS this WEEK
JESUS IS TRANSFIGURED
The transfiguration of Jesus was an important event
in his life. To appreciate its significance one must study the
events that led to the transfiguration. It began with Jesus
asking his disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” (Mark 8:
29) Peter responded for his companions and confessed his
faith in Jesus as the Messiah. The Messiah had been promised to the Jewish people since the time of David. The Messiah will be a Son of David.
Unfortunately many expected the Messiah to be a
powerful political, military person, freeing the Jews from
the power of Rome. So in the next event our Lord makes it
clear that he will be a suffering Messiah, fulfilling the
prophecies of Isaiah about the Suffering Servant. (See especially Isaiah 53) Christ says, “The Son of Man must suffer
greatly.” (Mark 8: 31) Peter then in the next episode rebuked Jesus, who responded, “Get behind me, Satan. You
are thinking not as God does, but as human beings
do.” (Mark 8: 33)
In the next words of Jesus, he challenges his followers, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” (Mark 8:34) This is
the great challenge to all Christians. We must be ready to
follow our suffering Messiah. Basically this involves love
of God and love of neighbor, as Jesus often points out. Love
of neighbor means everyone, for each human being is a
child of God. Love of neighbor also demands that one pursue justice as well as charity. A Christian must do no harm
to others, should not be guilty of sins such as discrimination, racism, any injustice!
Christ understood the great challenge to his disciples – they must accept that he is a suffering Messiah. They
too must be willing to suffer when necessary. Our Lord then
is transfigured, giving his disciples, his followers down
through the ages, a glimpse of the happiness to follow the
suffering: “His clothes became dazzling white, such as no
fuller on earth could bleach them.” (Mark 9: 3)
Elijah and Moses appeared with Christ, representing the prophets and Law of the Old Testament. They
would now yield to the life and ministry of Jesus. But most
importantly a cloud appeared, representing the presence of
God himself: “From the cloud came a voice, “This is my
beloved Son. Listen to him.’” (Mark 9: 7) These words of
Yahweh represent the fulfillment of an Old Testament
prophecy: “A prophet like me will the Lord, your God, raise
up for you from among your own kindred; that is the one to
whom you shall listen.” (Deuteronomy 18: 15) The transfiguration prepares for the glory of Easter Sunday!

OUE BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL
ADOPT-A-STUDENT at FATHER ANDREW WHITE
SCHOOL: Each year there are families who want their
children to have a Catholic education, but need financial
assistance in order to do so. At Father Andrew White
School, we offer tuition aid through the Combs Trust and
our parishes like St. Aloysius, but each year the need grows.
In the past many parishioners have participated in the Adopt
-a-Student Program and our families have been very grateful.
Once again we are asking individuals and families in
the parish to consider participating, knowing that no amount
is too small and would be greatly appreciated. Donors and
recipients are anonymous. Please contact the school office
at 301-475-9795 for more information. Donations may be
given through the parish or directly to the school. Thank
you.
LENTEN FOOD DRIVE: As we start to celebrate the
season of Lent, may we continue to answer the Gospel call
to serve those in need. Please help make a difference for
local families by taking a bag in the vestibule and filing the
bag with food. To ensure Helping Hands (local food pantry) receives what is really needed, please fill the bag from
the category paired with the first letter of your last
name. Please return the bag on Community Sunday
March 15th.

Physician-Assisted Suicide: KNOW THE FACTS
Maryland Catholic Conference
Legislation has been introduced in the Maryland General
Assembly (HB 1021/SB 676) that would allow doctors to
legally prescribe a lethal dose of medicine at the request of
a patient who has been deemed mentally competent and
who has received a terminal diagnosis. The legislation, referred to by its proponents as “death with dignity” is unnecessary, flawed, and lacks safeguards:
•
It’s impossible to accurately predict a terminal diagnosis.
•
The inability to accurately predict life expectancy is
among the most compelling reasons to oppose physician-assisted suicide.
•
Medical prognoses are based on statistical averages,
which are often incorrect in determining what will happen to an individual patient.
•
The bill does not require doctors to screen patients for
depression before providing lethal medication.
•
The legislation opens the door for those who are suffering from depression – or even those who are overwhelmed for a short period of time – to choose a lethal
course of action.
•
Mental health professionals argue strongly that the
overwhelming number of suicides could have been
avoided with the right therapeutic intervention.
The Maryland Catholic Conference is a member of a broadBased coalition, Maryland Against Physician Assisted Suicide. Also, see: www.StopAssisred SuicideMD.org
