RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA)...
The RCIA is the process of welcoming new members to the
Catholic Church. It is intended for adults who have never been
baptized, or for adults who have been baptized Christian and now
wish to practice the faith in the Catholic tradition. It is an ongoing
process of formation, catechesis and liturgical rites. Anyone interested is asked to call the rectory for an appointment to discuss the
process.

Any youth or their parent seeking the Sacrament of Confirmation
and not registered in the school is asked to contact the Director of
Religious Education.
FIRST FRIDAYS: Masses at 9:00 am (September through June) and
7:00 pm. Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament from
10:30 am till 6:45 pm followed by Benediction.
Confessions from 6:00 - 6:30 pm.
SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE…In order to facilitate marriage preparation, couples seeking to be married in the Church are
to make arrangements with the pastor six months to one year in
advance of their intended wedding date. At least one of the engaged must be a registered and practicing member of the parish.

the spiritual comfort, strength and healing of the ill. If there is a

THE HUMAN NATURE OF JESUS
A teaching of primary importance concerning Jesus
is that he is both God and Man, that he has both a divine
and a human nature. Today’s Gospel (Mark 1: 12 -15) attests to the humanity of Christ as he is tempted by Satan.
Throughout our Lord’s public life the Gospels record elements that are divine and elements that are human. At the
height of his ministry he dies on the cross, a sign of his human nature, but also rises from the dead, a sign of his divine
nature.
Mark makes the significant point that the Spirit
guides the life of Jesus: “The Spirit drove Jesus out into the
desert. “ (vs. 12) In this Gospel there is no mention of the
specific temptations, as we find in Matthew and Luke. The
Old Testament often sees the desert as the place where evil
spirits dwell. The very fact that Christ is tempted by Satan
makes clear that our Lord has a true human nature. It is also
a preview of the ultimate encounter between Jesus and Satan on Good Friday, where our Lord is clearly triumphant.
By his death he wins salvation for all who approach him
with love and sorrow.
There are other temptations of Jesus, even from his
own followers. After Christ had taught his disciples of the
necessity of his suffering and death, Peter rebukes him,
tempting him to give up the plan of suffering set by God.
Then Christ says to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan. You are
not thinking as God does, but as human beings do.” (Mark
8: 13) Even when Jesus was hanging on the cross, some of
the bystanders said, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let the Messiah, the King of Israel, come down from
the cross that we may see and believe.” (15: 31 – 32) Jesus
resists all these temptations by his human free choice. Thus,
he “was handed over for our transgressions and was raised
up for our justification.” (Romans 4: 25)
John the Baptist began his ministry “proclaiming a
baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.” (Mark 1:
4) Jesus begins his proclamation of the gospel, with similar
words, “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God
is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” (1: 15)
“Repent” is asking people to change their minds, change
their hearts and put God at the center of their lives.

LITTLE BLACK BOOKS: As a companion for prayer
during the season of Lent the parish is once again offering
The Little Black Book. These pocket size books help us
spend six minutes each day meditation on the Passion from
the Gospel of Luke. The Little Black Book is available in
the vestibule. We are asking for a $1 donation to offset the
cost.

FIRST SUNDAY OF LENT
EVANGELIZATION & PARISH LIFE
FASTING & ABSTINENCE FOR LENT: Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting and abstinence
from meat for those age 18—59. Seafood is permitted. In
addition, Fridays during Lent are days of abstinence for
those age 14 and up. When fasting, a person is permitted to
eat one full meal. (If possible, the fast on Good Friday is
continued until the Easter Vigil as the "paschal fast" to
honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more
readily his Resurrection.)
OUR PARISH MISSION at St. Aloysius Church will start
off the season of Lent on Mon./Tues., Feb. 23/24, 7-8:30
PM. Well-known blogger and speaker Msgr. Charles Pope
of the Archdiocese of Washington will offer insights on the
challenging theme of “Faith and the Family Today: Responding to the New Atheism”. All are welcome.
VOCATIONS CROSS Sign-up
The Vocations Cross is presented to a family at one of the
three weekend Masses after Communion and it is asked
that it be returned to the rectory by the following Saturday
morning. Jim Hoffman, the parish’s Vocations Liaison, is
in the process of calling all homes that signed up to have
the Vocations Cross in their home to schedule your week.

ADOPT-A-STUDENT at FATHER ANDREW WHITE
SCHOOL: Each year there are families who want their
children to have a Catholic education, but need financial
assistance in order to do so. At Father Andrew White
School, we offer tuition aid through the Combs Trust and
our parishes like St. Aloysius, but each year the need grows.
In the past many parishioners have participated in the Adopt
-a-Student Program and our families have been very grateful.
Once again we are asking individuals and families in
the parish to consider participating, knowing that no amount
is too small and would be greatly appreciated. Donors and
recipients are anonymous. Please contact the school office

given through the parish or directly to the school. Thank

ST VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
ATTENTION ALL PARISHIONERS: The members of
the St. Vincent DePaul Society invite you to join our ministry. We are a small group of parishioners who assist those
St. Mary’s County residents in need. By joining, not only
will you be helping others, you’ll find yourself growing in

2015 ANNUAL JUBILARIAN MASS: The annual Jubilarian Celebration of marriage honoring couples 25, 30, 35,

pm at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate
