February 22, 2015 St. John Vianney Parish Page Three Parish Lenten Retreat From the Pastor Finding the Peace of Mary in a Martha World March 9, 10 & 11 at 7 p.m. St. John Vianney Church Parish Lenten Liturgies Beginning Ash Wednesday, and continuing through the Lenten season, in an effort to provide a more penitential spirit at our weekend Masses, we will attempt to create a greater atmosphere of prayerful silence at the conclusion of the Communion Rite and will conclude Mass in silence omitting the recessional hymn and postlude. The exception will be the weekend of Laetare Sunday (4th Sunday of Lent). This is a more joyful liturgy anticipating Easter Sunday, so there will be a more festive tone to this liturgy. Hillenbrand took his vows as a Benedictine monk on August 15, 1960 and ordained a priest on May 27, 1965. He was a monk at Blue Cloud Abbey from 1960, until Blue Cloud Abbey closed in 2012. During that time he was a Novice Master, Pastor on an Indian Mission, a Chaplain at Mt. Marty College, a Prior in Coban, Guatemala and served as Abbot from 1992–2009. Presently Fr. Page Four St. John Vianney Parish First Sunday of Lent St. John’s Ushers’ Ministry Annual St. Pat’s Party Thursday, March 12th Begins at 7 p.m.—Msgr. Trainor Hall The dual disciplines of fasting and abstinence have a long history in the Catholic Church. Going back to the early church, the purpose behind the custom of self denial is not punishment; it is to simplify our lifestyles so that we create a certain emptiness. In this way, freed from all distractions, we are able to hear and respond to God’s continued call to conversion and holiness. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 to 59 years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is allowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed. Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday are days of abstinence. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self denial that are suitable to their condition. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter. There is a quote that says, “Sacrifice is giving up something good for something better.” Although the author is unknown it was obviously a wise person. It brings to mind Lent and the tradition of “giving something up.” When we give up something “good” we are truly sacrificing. What do we get that is “better?” A first thought might be graces and blessings. But we also get to experience the feeling of wanting and not being able to receive. Like the homeless, the incarcerated, those less fortunate; we are experiencing their need, but in a very small way. However, unlike the less fortunate, we go without by choice. We have the ability to obtain what we choose to give up. As you continue your Lenten journey, please keep in mind those who do without because of their circumstances and pray for all who are in need. Open to Catholic women 17 and older. We meet at the Vianney Center (SW corner of Blind Pass & 82nd Avenue) Psalms: The School of Prayer The Psalms reveal Israel’s response to God’s covenant offer and serve as a model for our response to Him. Indeed, one could say the Psalms tell the “inside” story, which comes from the deeply personal perspective of one who is seeking God. Our communication with God is enhanced by a deeper understanding of the book of Psalms and of the individual psalms that reside in each of our hearts. Featured CD of the Week: My Beloved Son—Meditations for Lent —Fr. Robert Barron Fr. Robert Barron offers five sermons on the spiritual discipline we must cultivate in the Lenten season, a discipline centered in Christ. These meditations cover topics such as finding our identity in God, prayer as the key to mission, our thirst for God, how to end our alienation from God, and how to joyfully embrace the way to happiness. We kindly ask for a $3 donation for each CD and to continue this ministry. Checks may be payable to St. John Vianney. CD’s are available in the main entrance of the church. First Sunday of Lent Discover a rich school of prayer for all life’s circumstances. Experience the transforming power of the responsorial Psalms in the Mass. Learn how to visualize the psalms in order to empower their meditation. Study the many ways the Psalms foretell the life and mission of Jesus. See how the Psalms can empower your prayer to become an honest and personal dialogue with God. Lenten Thoughts At a Mass in another parish, the priest spoke about Mission Statements and how business and parishes have their own mission statements. This brief statement describes priorities and goals. Your place of employment or businesses may have its own statement. So, how about you? What is your mission statement? Lent would be a perfect time to reflect on what your own personal mission is in life. Take time in the coming weeks to ask the Holy Spirit to help you contemplate and prepare your own personal mission statement. If having one is so important for a business, why shouldn’t we each have our own Mission Statement?
