Reflections - Second Sunday of Lent
“If God is for us, who can be against us?” Perhaps, the better question would be: Are we for God? It is understandable that those who
see themselves as Christians, assume that God is on their side and
therefore they must be in the right. The Pharisees also thought this
way but they were roundly criticized by Jesus. We are not all knowing and just—that is God. We are trying to learn how to be more like
God, our Father. We need to develop a humble spirit and an open
heart so that we may learn how to be on God’s side rather than insisting that God support our ideas and plans.
To you will I offer sacrifice of thanksgiving,
And I will call upon the name of the Lord.
Psalm 116:17

First Saturday of the Month at St. Michael’s of Whittemore
Father Ramaeker has confessions from 9:00 to 9:50 a.m. followed by the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass
at 10:00 a.m. with the Rosary and meditation time to follow. We encourage you to take advantage
of this opportunity for prayer, reconciliation and Mass through the intercession of Mary.
In a private revelation, this is what the Blessed Mother Mary has said about First Saturdays: “I
promise to assist at the hour of death with all the graces necessary for salvation for all those who,
on the first Saturday of five consecutive months, go to Confession and receive Holy Communion,
recite five decades of the Rosary and keep me company for a quarter of an hour while meditating
on the mysteries of the rosary, with the intention of making reparation to me.”
The promise of dying in God’s favor for having consecutively made “five” first Saturdays is a bonus for her children as individuals. First Saturdays are, nonetheless, to be primarily made for the
good of others, for the Pope and for the universal Catholic Church….Each First Saturday concerns
the spiritual welfare of the entire Church and the world. In a spirit of evangelization we should
strive, then, to make First Saturdays habitually throughout the year for the good of the whole
Church in reparation to Mary’s Immaculate Heart. What is made to Mary’s Heart is directed also to
her Son and accrues to the Universal Church of which she is Mother. (from the booklet “First Saturdays - The Triumph of the Immaculate Heart”) The book explains more about how we bear each
others’ sins - when one of us sins, essentially all of us do. So, you can know that whatever efforts
you can put forth for First Saturdays can have a big effect on helping the Church to become more
holy.
You may also follow the First Saturday devotion by going to the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice
of the Mass on a Saturday evening, but then, for you, it counts as your First Saturday obligation
and then you would go to the celebration of Mass again on Sunday of that same weekend to fulfill
your Sunday obligation.
I know this seems like a lot! However, I just want you to know that this opportunity is available
and is most needed for the struggles that we all face and for the even greater struggle that the Holy
Catholic Church as a whole faces. Perhaps you could begin by at least considering going to Confession since this is a different time slot than what is offered anywhere nearby. I would also encourage
you to study the First Saturday as well as First Friday devotions. These are longstanding traditions
in the Church that most of the faithful have not yet responded to. That does not mean that we
should feel that it is okay to follow the majority. We have seen how that works! Please consider this
important opportunity and take time to educate yourselves and your families about it. Thank you
and may God bless you for your efforts!
Amen.
