different from the Mass prayers currently used in the Roman
Catholic parishes. If you are unsure about the texts we use, please
feel free to follow “The Order of the Mass” as it appears in
readily available Saint Joseph Sunday Missals.

Cheyenna Ames passed away on February 17, 2015 at the
age of 17. She has been battling cystic fibrosis for the past
several years of her life and became friends with Fr. Marek
during her frequent hospitalizations. Her grandmother,
Julie Relford, (parishioner) wishes to thank everyone for all
of their prayers for Cheyenna over the last several years.
May Cheyenna rest in peace.

Dear Parishioners and Friends,
In the northern hemisphere the liturgical season of Lent
overlaps with the muddy and messy season between
winter and spring when mud covers everything. Our dirt
roads turn to mud, our shoes are coated, and our pant
cuffs show tell-tale signs. The mud gets everywhere. The
ground freezes in the winter and it is still not thawed when
the piles of snow start to melt in early spring. The water
has no way to go back down into the ground, so it stays
on the surface, mixing with the dirt and making a mess of
everything. That is fitting for Lent, which most years
conveniently overlaps the mud.
Lent is a season in the Christian liturgical calendar
beginning 46 days before Easter Sunday (called Ash Wednesday). In the early church, it started as an expansion of the
fasting period required for catechumens (those being prepared for baptism) before they were baptized - usually on
Easter. The 46 days are taken from Mark’s Gospel (1:13) where Jesus fasted and was tempted for 40 days after his
baptism. The six extra days account for Sundays on which Christians are not to fast because Sunday is the Lord’s day.
The Lord’s day is considered a day of celebration as it was the day of Christ’s resurrection.
In Lent we face the parts of our spiritual life that are the messiest, thickest, and the most inconvenient. We often find
that even if we can hide the mess from others, we can not hide it from ourselves. Like mud, it gets everywhere. It is
the mud season of our souls. The time when we look deeply at what is inside of us, and start to find the places that we
are trying to keep frozen and impenetrable to God's grace. We all have them. They are filled with fear, anger,
prejudice, resentments. It is easier when we keep them hidden and frozen because we know that once they see the
light and start to melt we will not be able to control the fallout. I think that is why we are often so reluctant to really
dive head first into Lent. Deep down we know that letting God into the deepest parts of our soul can make things
messy.
It is not surprising that Christians are so wary of the mess. We learn it from the very institutions dedicated to nurturing
our faith. In the church we often prefer the neat, bright, and convenient to the reality that life is messy, and hard, and
imperfect. We err on the side of keeping the surface clean, rather than digging deeper. It is why many churches do not
talk about the hard stuff. It is why instead of having honest, life-changing, deep discussions, we often dwell on what is
easy to agree upon, or what is so inoffensive to anyone that it is uninspiring. Most churchgoing people do not want to
talk about addiction, or depression, or economic justice, or inclusion of LGBT people, racial injustice, or any other
topic that might cause division, even though there are many for whom talking about any one of those things would be
a lifeline. Instead they create a church culture that is the spiritual equivalent of keeping up appearances. Many people
have come to believe that church is a place where we want you show up in your Sunday best, rather than with mud on
your shoes. I think that is one reason churches are a lot more packed on Easter morning than on Good Friday, or any
other day of Lent. We have taught church goers that we know how to find God on the best of days. But we rarely talk
about how to find God on worst of them. Which is why maybe we need the mud. Maybe we need the mess. Maybe we
need the season where on the surface everything looks like it is going to hell, but deep down we are opening ourselves
up to something new.
Lent can be good for the church. It can be the time when hearts thaw the way the earth does, old barriers to God's
love melt away, what's unknown is allowed in, and new life emerges in us all. I believe that we, at St. Stanislaus, are
becoming a place that does not shy away from acknowledging the messiness of the spiritual life. We strive to be the
church that journeys with parishioners as they go through their own spiritual mud seasons. And these parishioners
become the ones who turn that place into something vital. Something life-giving. Something that has a lot to do with
Resurrection.

Drodzy Parafianie i Przyjaciele!
Na północnej półkuli okres Wielkiego Postu przypada mniej
więcej w tym samym czasie co czas brudny czas roztopów między
zimą a wiosną. Drogi i chodniki pokrywają się błotem, co szybko
odbija się na kondycji naszych butów i nogawek. Gdzie się nie
spojrzysz, widać błoto. Zamrożona zimą ziemia nie zdążyła się
rozmrozić, a woda z topniejącego na naszych oczach śniegu
zamiast wsiąkać w ziemię miesza się na powierzchni z brudem i
piaskiem. Takim sposobem Wielki Post i błoto idą ręka w rękę.
Liturgiczny okres Wielkiego Postu rozpoczyna się 46 dni przed
Niedzielą Wielkiej Nocy w Środę zwaną Popielcową. W Kościele
pierwszych wieków był to czas postu wymaganego od
katechumenów, czyli osób dorosłych przgotowujących się do przyjęcia chrztu w wigilię święta Zmartwuchwstania
Pańskiego. Liczba 46 dni wywodzi się z Ewangelii Św. Marka (1:13) gdzie Jezus spędził 40 dni na pustyni modląc się i
poszcząc. Dodatekowe sześć dni to sześć niedziel tego okresu, gdyż każda niedziela jako pamiątka Zmartwychwstania
Chrystusa znosi post.
W tym czasie Wielkiego Postu jesteśmy wezwani by spojrzeć uczciwie na najbardziej kłopotliwe części naszego życia.
Mimo że udaje nam czasami się ukrywać te części życia przed wzrokiem innych ludzi, nie jesteśmy w stanie ukryć ich
przed sobą samym. Wielki Post to okres uczciwego spojrzenia na błoto w naszym duchowym życiu. Jest to czas
głębokiego spojrzenia w nasze wnętrze i odnajdowania zamarzniętej nieraz gleby, przez którą nie przedostaja się Boża
miłość i łaska. Wszyscy mamy takie zamarznięte rejony życia. Jak lodem ścina je lęk, gniew, uprzedzenia, brak
wybaczenia. Czasami wydaje się nam, że lepiej trzymać te regiony zamarznięte i ukryte przed naszym wzrokiem, bo
wiemy że przy odwilży nie będziemy w stanie kontrolować procesy topnienia. To chyba dlatego z taką niechęcią
odnosimy się do wielkopostnych zachęt do spojrzenia we własne wnętrze. Głeboko w naszej duszy zdajemy sobie
sprawę z tego, że wpuszczenie Bożego światła i ciepła Bożej miłości może doprowadzić do powstanie dużej ilości
błota i bałaganu.
Tak naprawdę nie powinno nas dziwić, że jako chrześcijanie mamy awersję do brudu i bałaganu. Instytucje i osoby
odpowiedzialne za naszą edukację przywyczaiły nas do funkcjonowania w uporządkowanej, czystej, posegregowanej
rzeczywistości. Zamiast ryzykownego kopania w głębię, wolimy bezpieczne pozostawanie na uporządkowanej
płyciźnie. To dlatego tak wiele kościołów unika dialogu na trudne tematy. Zamiast prowadzenia szczerego,
życiodajnego dialogu skupiamy się zazwyczaj na tym, na co łatwo jest nam wszystkim się zgodzić, co nie wywołuje
zbędnych kontrowersji. Więkoszość tzw. „bogobojnych” ludzi wierzących nie ma najmniejszej ochoty rozmawiać na
trudne tematy jak uzależnienia, depresja, sprawiedliwość ekonomiczna i społeczna, podejście do osób o innych
orientacjach seksualnych, napięcia na tle rasowym, czy też inne kwestie grożące pojawieniem się odmiennych opinii.
Nie zauważamy często, że otwarta rozmowa na trudne tematy jest nieraz dla wielu ludzi ostatnią deską ratunku,
momentem dającym nadzieję w beznadziejnym czasie. Niestety, zamiast zaangażowania w ryzykowny dialog,
wspólnoty wiary wybierają zazwyczaj kulturę udawania, że takie trudne kwestie ich nie dotyczą, tworząc w ten sposób
pozory ładu i porządku. Wielu ludzi uważa dziś, że kościół to miejsce, gdzie trzeba się pojawić raz w tygoniu w
odświętnym ubraniu, bez śladu błota na butach czy nogawkach. To pewnie dlatego kościoły wypchane są po brzegi w
wielkanocny poranek, a świecą pustkami w Wielki Piątek, czy też w czasie Drogi Krzyżowej. Nasi katecheci i rodzice
nauczyli nas znajdować Boga powinno w piękne dni. Rzadko jednak rozmawiamy o znajdywaniu Boga w trudne,
skomplikowane dni. I może właśnie dlatego potrzebne jest w naszym życiu błoto i nieporządek. Być może potrzebny
jest nam ten okres topniejąego śniegu i błota, by otworzyć głęboko skryte obszary naszego życia.
Wielki Post może być bardzo owocnym czasem. Może być czasem topniejących serc, pozbywanie sie barier
zagradzających drogę Bożej miłości. Może być czasem otwarcia się na to, co jest nieznane i być może odrobinę
ryzykowne. Ufam, że nasza parafia to wspólnota nie lękająca się dialogo o trudnych i czasem skomplikowanych
sytuacjach życia. Staramy się być kościołem, który pielgrzymuje razem z ludźmi, nawet gdy ich życiowe scieżki pełne są
błota. Ci ludzie zaś, nasi parafianie o ubrudzonych błotem nogawkach, sprawiają że to miejsce tętni życiem i jest
życiodajną wspólnotą. To zaś jest najlepszym wprowadzeniem w życie wiary w Zmartwychwstanie!

is hosting their Annual BBQ along with a Raffle
on Sunday, March 8th from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00
p.m. Bring your family and friends to join us for
delicious food and refreshments by participating
in this fundraising event. Show your support for
these wonderful ladies who support our Parish!

we will host our First Annual
Mouse Race! Reserve your tables early and bring your
family and friends for a fun filled evening. The doors will
open at 6:30 and the first race will be at 7:30pm.
Everyone 16 or older is invited to participate. Individual
tickets are $13 or reserve a table for 10 for only $100 and
get a chance to name your mouse. Admission
includes setups, snacks and losing ticket prize drawings
after each race. A cash bar will be available. Call or see

March 15: 4th Annual Bonnet Making Party
Debby Gray and Jeannette Harris will be holding the 4th
Annual Bonnet Making Party in the small room of the
PHC from 10:15 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. In addition to
helping everyone make their special Easter Bonnet, they
will be selling Red & White Hats/Fascinators with all
proceeds from the sale of these items going to support
the “Monthly Making of Sandwiches” for Karen House,
a local women’s shelter.
March 15: “Pride” Committee Meeting
All Parishioners and friends interested in having a strong
Catholic presence at the “Pride Festival” this year are
invited to attend an organizational meeting on
Sunday, March 15th. We will gather in the
sacristy immediately following the 9:00 a.m.

Several “hiking enthusiasts” in our Parish invite
everybody on another walking adventure! Being

Valley Conservation Nature Center (11715 Cragwold

15 marca: 4 Doroczne Strojenie Kapeluszy
Debby Gray oraz Jeannette Harris będą gospodyniami
już 4 dorocznego party ze strojeniem wielkanocnych
kapeluszy w małej sali PHC od 10:15 rano do 1:00 po
południu. Poza pomocą w przygotowaniu świątecznych
kreacji kapeluszowych panie gospodynie będą
sprzedawały również gotowe kapelusze. Cały dochód z
ich przedaży przeznaczony będzie na zakup materiałów
na kanapki dla schroniska dla bezdomnych kobiet.
15 marca: Spotkanie przed Świętem Równości
Wszystkich parafian i przyjaciół zainteresowanych
widoczną obecnością katolików na Święcie Równości
zapraszamy na spotkanie komitetu
przygotowowaczego w niedzielę 15 marca.

March 20: Communal Penance Service
20 marca: Wielkopostne Nabożeństwo Pokutne
We encourage all Parishioners
to prepare themselves spiritually
for Easter by celebrating the
Sacrament of Penance. Every
Saturday, throughout the year,
there is an opportunity for
confession from 3:00 p.m. until
3:45 p.m.
Additionally, on Friday, March 20th there will be several
priests listening to confessions from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00
p.m. At 7:00 p.m. a Communal Penance Service will be
celebrated along with the Stations of the Cross. At the
end of that service, General Absolution will be offered
to all present, as an alternative to individual confession.

29 marca: Droga Krzyżowa dla dzieci
On March 29th, immediately following 9:00 a.m. Mass,
we invite all our young Parishioners and
friends for their own “Way of the Cross.”
This ancient Lenten devotion helps us to
reflect on Jesus' Passion and apply His
courage and sacrifice to our lives. It guides
children to ask for God's strength and
forgiveness, to praise and thank Jesus for
giving His life for us, and ultimately, to
find great hope.

Krzyżową dla dzieci w niedzielę 29 marca, o godzinie
10 rano rano. To piękne nabożeństwo wielkopostne
pomaga nam w rozmyślaniu nad męką i śmiercią Pana
Jezusa z miłości do każdego z nas. Zachęca nas
również do naśladowania tej miłości przez drobne
ofiary i pomoc bliźnim. Dzieci będą wspólnie prosiły
Pana Boga o łaskę przebaczenia oraz dziękowały Mu
za dar życia wiecznego wypływający ze śmierci i
zmartwychwstania Jezusa.
March 29: Palm Sunday - Easter Egg Hunt
29 marca: Polowanie na wielkanocne jajka
On Sunday, March 29th a traditional Easter Egg Hunt
will take place on the church campus at
12:00 p.m. Since many of our Parishioners
travel on the Easter weekend, we are
hosting this fun-filled event on Palm
Sunday. There will be lots and lots of eggs
and baskets to win! Children of ages 1
through 12 are invited to participate and
they do not need to belong to our Parish.
Please bring your own basket. The Egg
Hunt is sponsored by our friends from the Polish
National Alliance Cadets Lodge #1134.

March 31: Building the Tomb of Jesus
Cultivating many ancient Polish traditions, among other
things we erect in our church a side altar for the Holy
Week, also known as a “Tomb of Jesus.” It is used for
the exhibition of the Blessed Sacrament on Good Friday
and Holy Saturday. As it is a complex and timeconsuming process, we invite all able volunteers to join
us at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, March 31st - your help will
be very much appreciated!

The summit of the Liturgical
Year is the Easter Triduum from the evening of Holy
Thursday to the evening of
Easter Sunday. The single
celebration of the Triduum
marks the end of the Lenten
season, and leads to the Mass
of the Resurrection of the Lord at the Easter Vigil. The
liturgical services that take place during the Triduum are:
Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday (7:00pm),
Good Friday’s Liturgy of the Lord's Passion (7:00 p.m.),
and Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord (8:00 p.m on
Holy Saturday and 9:00 a.m. on Easter Sunday).

April 4: Blessing of Easter Baskets
4 kwietnia: Święconka
On Holy Saturday, April 4th, the Blessing of
Easter Food will be offered in our church at four
different times: 11:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m.
and 7:15 p.m. This tradition called Święconka is
one of the most enduring and beloved Polish
traditions - please help us to cultivate it!

June 4: 25th Annual Forest Park Hat Luncheon
W Wielką Sobotę, 4 kwietnia, cztery razy odbędzie
się nabożeństwo błogosławieństwa Wielkanocnych
pokarmów, tzw. Święconka: o godzinie 11:00 rano,
2:00 i 4:00 po południu oraz o 7:15 wieczorem.
Zachęcamy wszystkich do podtrzymania tej
pięknej polskiej tradycji, a może nawet zaproszenia
swoich przyjaciół i sąsiadów.
4 czerwca: 25 Lancz Kapeluszników Nasza
For the first time ever, St. Stanislaus is going to
participate in the Annual Forest Park Hat Luncheon.
We are going to have one or two “themed” tables for the
luncheon depending on how many people from our
Parish wish to participate. Men and Women are
invited to participate wearing hats that honor our
Polish Heritage in colors of red and white. The
cost for the luncheon is $100.00 per person with
approximately $60.00 being tax deductible. Please
contact Debby Gray or Jeannette Harris should
you be interested in joining in the fun! More

POLISH HISTORY: 1794 KOŚCIUSZKO UPRISING
On March 24, 1794 in the Kraków (Cracow) town
square, Tadeusz Kościuszko, - a veteran of the American
Revolutionary War - announced the general uprising and
assumed the powers of the Commander in Chief of all of
the Polish military forces. He also vowed on that day
“not to use these powers to oppress any person, but to
defend the integrity of the borders of Poland, regain the
independence of the nation, and to strengthen universal
liberties.”
The decline of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth
had been ongoing for more than a century when
Tadeusz Kościuszko lead his nation in a war of
independence against the Russians that occupied
Poland. The remnants of the great Commonwealth were
under the control of the Russian Empress Catherine the
Great in 1791 when the Polish leaders declared a
constitution on May 3rd.
The
declaration vexed the Russians and
Catherine wanted to put down the
movement.
First she had to
extricate herself from the war she
was fighting with the Ottoman
Empire.
Once this was done, Tsarina
Catherine moved her focus to
Poland, a country she viewed as little
more than a conquered
province. 1792 saw the Russian
troops move in and although the
Poles fought valiantly they were
ultimately betrayed by their King and
some of the leading nobles. Supplies
that were to go to the Poles were
taken to the Russian forces fighting
them instead. Ultimately the Polish
King signed a surrender and
Kościuszko and other leaders of the Constitutional
movement fled the country. Since they were betrayed,
the Poles did not feel that they had been soundly beaten
by their enemies and decided to give it another go in
1794. Kosciuszko managed to secretly get back into the
country and on March 24, 1794 announced the Uprising
on Krakow’s market square. He was proclaimed the
Commander of the Polish forces in the rebellion that
was to be waged against the occupying powers.
The commander insisted that the war be fought for all of
the Poles, not just the nobles. His experience in the
American War of Independence informed him of the
usefulness of militias and he formed the peasants into
military units. When they did not have enough muskets,
the peasants armed themselves with modified scythes.
Hardly a professional army, the Russian Tsarina,
Catherine the Great, quickly ordered an attack
on Kraków hoping to squash the Uprising in one blow.
On April 4th the two sides collided near the village of
Racławice, with Kościuszko’s forces actually having the
man advantage if you include all the peasants with sharp
sticks. After a bloody battle they won the day, but were
too weak to pursue the Russian troops, who remained in
the area. Though of no lasting strategic significance,
news of the Polish victory spread quickly, rousing great
support for Kościuszko’s Uprising. Today the battle is
still a source of national pride and also considered to be
the beginning of the Polish peasantry’s ascension from
second-class serfs to equally entitled citizens.
Inspired by Kościuszko’s victory, insurrections broke
out across Poland, particularly in Vilnius and in Warsaw,
where a 6,000 strong Russian garrison
was forced to evacuate the city. On
May 7th, 1794 Kościuszko issued the
‘Proclamation of Połaniec’ – a less
snappy-sounding fore-bearer of
Lincoln’s 'Emancipation Proclamation'
in which he partially abolished serfdom
in Poland and granted civil liberties to
the peasantry. Though the law never
fully came to fruition and was rejected
by much of the nobility, it was a
landmark announcement and did much
to draw peasants into the conflict.
Kościuszko’s ideals had mass appeal to
all the oppressed; in what has become
a historical footnote, Józef Berkelicz
called Kościuszko a ‘messenger of
God’ and founded a Jewish cavalry
unit to fight at his side – the first allJewish military unit since biblical times.
Despite the steady and swift recruitment of forces, the
Polish defeats began to accumulate once Prussia entered
the war in an alliance with Russia . Eventually the forces
ranged against Poles proved too great and in one battle
Kościuszko himself was captured. The rebellion
collapsed and Austria, Russian and Prussia partitioned
what was left of Poland among themselves. Kościuszko
languished for two years in a Russian prison before being
pardoned and released by Czar Paul I. He spent the
balance of his life agitating for Polish freedom and for
republican principles generally. He died in Switzerland in
1817 from typhoid fever. The name of Kościuszko is still
remembered as a national hero, not only by the Poles
and Lithuanians, but also by the people of the United
States, a country his efforts were successful in liberating.

SAINT OF THE MONTH
ŚWIĘTA MIESIĄCA
Blessed Angela (Aniela) Salawa was born into a large
family of eleven children on September 9, 1881 in
Siepraw near Krakow in Poland. Her father was a
blacksmith and her mother was devoted to home and
her many children, to whom she taught piety, modesty
and hard work. Angela was the youngest of nine
brothers, and two sisters. Her childhood was tough for
the most part. Angela’s family was often
malnourished, causing them to be sick a lot. As early
as age 15, she was in service to a family in Siepraw,
grazing cows, cutting grass, entertaining the children
and eradicating the roots of grass tufts in the frost
period. In October 1897 she
moved in with her older sister
Therese who lived in Krakow.
Angela went to school for some
years to learn how to read and
write. However, she struggled with
spelling and punctuation. She
began to read more and more
about Christ and his wonderful
works. This influenced her greatly,
when she joined the domestic
women workers Association of
Saint Zita in her late teenage years.
Błogosławiona Aniela Salawa urodziła się we wsi
Siepraw niedaleko Krakowa, była najmłodszym,
jedenastym dzieckiem swoich rodziców. Jej ojciec był
kowalem a matka poświęcała się pracy w domu i opiece
nad dziećmi. Jej dzieciństwo było bardzo skromne i z
powodu częstych głodów Aniela była chorowitym
dzieckiem. W wieku 15 lat została służącą bogatej
rodziny Siepraw i zajmowała się wypasaniem krów i
opieką nad dziećmi. W 1987 roku zamieszkała w
Krakowie razem ze swoją siostrą Teresą. Aniela
skończyła zaledwie kilka klas szkoły podstawowej i
nauczyła się pisać oraz czytać jednak ortografia oraz
interpunkcja zawsze były jej słabą
stroną. W Krakowie zaczęła więcej
czytać, zwłaszcza lektury o życiu i
nauczaniu Pana Jezusa. Pod
wpływem tych lektur tuż przed 20
urodzinami zapisała się do
Towarzystwa Św. Zyty, które było
pobożną organizacją dla służących.
Bl. Angela Salawa was very
generous and loving. She started
off gathering together and
instructing
young
women
domestic workers. During World
War I she aided prisoners of war,
without discriminating against
people of different ethnicity or
religion. She continued learning
more about the teachings of God
and took notes on everything she
read. On March 15, 1912, she joined the Secular
Franciscan order. Angela showed how much she cared
about other people and their needs. She is a prime
example to us that you can overcome any barrier or
obstacle with grace. Even when Angela was sick and
weak, she still helped the sick and the poor. Angela
always showed great maturity and was never afraid to
stand up for her faith. She died on March 12, 1922
from multiple sclerosis. Pope John Paul II proclaimed
her Blessed Angela Salawa on August 13, 1991.
Her feast day is celebrated on March 12th.

i miłosierną. W Krakowie zaczęła
gromadzić wokół siebie młode
dziewczęta, które pracowały jako
słyżące w zamożnych domach,
organizując dla nich katechezy i
różne kursy. W trakcie I Wojny
Światowej opiekowała się jeńcami
wojennymi
oraz
rannymi
żołnierzami, bez względu na ich
pochodzenie etniczne czy też
religię. Kontynuowała również
swoją edukację czytając m.in.
książki Św. Jana od Krzyża i
Teresy z Avilla. 15 marca 1912 r.
wstąpiła do Trzeciego Zakonu Św.
Franciszka
dla
świeckich.
Opiekując się młodymi dziewczętami oraz żołnierzami
udowodniła ona, że proste pochodzenie, ubóstwo i
brak formalnego wykształcenia nie są przeszkodami do
świętości. Nawet gy sama zachorowała na stwardnienie
rozsiane nie przestała opiekować sie potrzebującymi.
Zawsze wykazywała się duchową dojrzałością i nie
obawiała się nigdy bronić swoich religijnych
przekonań. Zmarła 12 marca 1922 roku. Papież Jan
Paweł II ogłosił Anielę Salawę błogosławioną 13
sierpnia 1991 roku. Jej wspomnienie obchodzi się 12
marca.
