30h Sunday in Ordinary Time - XXX Niedziela Zwykła
"The whole law and the prophets depend on these two
commandments." The law of love. That's what Jesus came
to establish. In a religious milieu that was often marked by
legalism and scrupulosity, Jesus brought a kind of freedom. He reminded us that the laws of religion are made to
serve the
ultimate goal of
love: love for God
and love for
neighbor.
Think about
the Ten Commandments. This
classical summary of God's
rules for us can
be divided into two types of laws. First come the laws about
loving God: have no strange gods; don't take the Lord's name in
vain; honor the Sabbath. Then come the laws about loving our
neighbor: honor your parents; don't kill; don't commit adultery;
don't steal; be honest; and don't covet your neighbor's spouse
or property. When we follow the law of love that Jesus preaches
today, all of this is taken care of.
If we loved God with our whole heart, mind, and soul, for
example, there would be no room left for false gods. There
would be no bitterness or apathy leading us to disrespect God's
name or to fail to worship him as he has asked. Similarly, if we
loved our neighbors as ourselves by following the Golden Rule,
then we would naturally respect them instead of lying, killing,
coveting, or the like.
Ultimately, all the dos and don'ts of the law are just specific
guidelines describing what love looks like. This is very helpful
for those times when love doesn't come so easily to us. When
we struggle with having our heart in the right place, the Ten
Commandments give us direction. But as Jesus instructs us
today, the goal is to grow in the kind of love that naturally leads
us to want to do what's best.

Miłość do Boga jest miłością jedyną w swoim
rodzaju, i nie da się jej podzielić z nikim innym. A
jednak to od miłości do Boga zależy każda inna miłość.
Brak miłości do bliźnich jest oznaką „wybrakowanej”
miłości do Boga. Kochać bliźniego można wtedy, gdy się chce
więcej dobra bardziej dla kogoś niż dla siebie. Sprawdzianem
miłości bliźniego jest zupełny brak zazdrości, a nawet radość z
czyjegoś szczęścia i sukcesu. Miłość objawia się przez
zdolność do oddawania tego, co posiadamy. Chodzi o
oddawanie dobra, ale też o nieoddawanie krzywdy. Jeśli Jezus
mówi, by kochać bliźniego jak siebie samego, to znaczy, że
każdy bliźni jest częścią tego samego ciała, a więc raniąc
kogoś, ranilibyśmy siebie samych. Oddawać dobro – to
pragnienie, aby ktoś był tak ceniony, jak ja sam chciałbym być
ceniony, aby ktoś był bardziej kochany niż ja, aby ktoś zyskiwał
większe znaczenie niż ja, aby inni byli bardziej chwaleni niż ja,
aby kogoś bardziej ceniono we wszystkim niż mnie. „Miłość
braterska ma w nas sprawiać, że będziemy tak kochali tych,
którzy nie są dla nas sympatyczni, jak tych, którzy są dla nas
sympatyczni” (M. D. Philippe).
Szatan skupia naszą uwagę na czyichś wadach i defektach,
Duch Święty zaś uwydatnia czyjeś zalety i dary. Możemy żyć,
nie będąc kochanymi przez bliźnich, ale nie możemy, gdy ich
nie kochamy. Miłość potrafi być równie porażająca jak śmierć, a
nawet bardziej! Święta Katarzyna Sieneńska podczas jednej z
ekstaz przeżyła śmierć mistyczną. Gdy odzyskała ziemską
świadomość, przez trzy dni płakała z tęsknoty za tym, czego
doświadczyła od Jezusa i co zobaczyła w Jego miłości do Jej
duszy! Miłość bliźniego nie może się ograniczać do jednej
osoby, choć miłość Boga zawsze ma wyłączność, bo Bóg jest
tylko jeden! Można kochać tylko jednego Boga, zaś miłość tylko
do jednego człowieka bywa grzechem bałwochwalstwa. „Każdy,
kto kocha tylko jedną osobę i nie kocha bliźniego swego,
zdradza tym samym, że jego uczucie do tej osoby jest zwykłym
przywiązaniem mającym charakter podporządkowania lub
dominacji. Na pewno zaś nie jest miłością” .

Szymon zawsze wymieniany jest razem z
apostołami Judą Tadeuszem i Jakubem
Młodszym. Według późnych źródeł Szymon
pracował na terenie dzisiejszej Brytanii oraz w
Babilonii i Persji. Zginął męczeńską śmiercią,
prawdopodobnie razem ze św. Judą
Tadeuszem Apostołem. Jest patronem diecezji
siedleckiej oraz farbiarzy, garncarzy, grabarzy i spawaczy.
Juda był bratem Jakuba Młodszego. Nazywany jest także
"bratem Pańskim". Juda jest autorem jednego z listów Nowego
Testamentu. Sam w nim nazywa siebie bratem Jakuba. Jest
patronem diecezji siedleckiej i Magdeburga.
Św. Juda Tadeusz uważany jest też za patrona spraw
beznadziejnych - jest wzywany w szczególnych potrzebach. Z tego
powodu w wielu kościołach w Polsce odbywają się raz w tygodniu
specjalne nabożeństwa ku jego czci, połączone z odczytaniem
próśb i podziękowań. Jest także patronem szpitalii personelu
medycznego.
Ss. Simon and Jude
apostles - October 28
The scriptures say very little about either Simon or Jude. In the
Gospel of Luke, Simon is called a zealot. A zealot is a person of
strong beliefs and actions. In those days there was a radical group
among the Jews called Zealots. These radicals hated the Romans
for taking control of Israel. They wanted to remove the invaders by
force. However, in Simon’s case the word zealot may have meant
that he took the Jewish law very seriously. According to legends,
Simon the Zealot spread the gospel in Egypt.
In the Gospels of Matthew and Mark, Jude is called Thaddeus.
We call him Jude to distinguish him from Judas Iscariot, who betrayed Jesus. He is called the patron saint of hopeless cases.
It is believed that Jude and Simon each traveled to Persia,
where they were martyred. Their bodies were carried to Rome for
burial in St. Peter’s.
Today’s feast comes just before All Saints’ Day. There are old
customs for today that are about getting ready for “Hallowtide.” It
was once a custom today to go from door to door begging for the
ingredients for “soul cakes” which were eaten in early November
as a way to share a meal with the dead. People would sing, “For
the love of Simon and Jude, give us fixings for our food!”
God of all, on this day
we recall those who have gone before us,
leaving this world and joining you forever.
Help us to remember
that we are never alone.
For even when we feel lost in our walk
with you, we have a cloud
of believers surrounding us,
cheering us on.
May your saints guide us with their words,
inspire us with their example,
and bring us to holiness with their prayers.
Most of all, give us the desire to be saints ourselves,
to know, love and serve you in this life,
and enjoy you forever in the next,
fulfilling the purpose for which you created us.
