The Witness The Monthly Newsletter of Southern Baptist Church March 2015 Volume 19 Number 3 YOUTH VALENTINE’S DAY BANQUET North America Annie Armstrong Offering The Easter offering runs the whole month of March. First Baptist Church goal is: $3,000 PAGE 2 THE WITNESS VOLUME 19 NUMBER 3 From Pastor Glenn… The Church and what is supposed to be has long been a discussion among believers. We have grown up in a Christian age that allows us to define church by the service on Sunday. As we move into a post-Christian age in America we must rethink our ability to reach the world with the gospel. This past week we have spent many hours praying and counseling young people and adults in our community because of another tragedy that took a 15 year old boy. We ask ourselves the question, “Why didn’t he find hope in the church?” there are many good churches in our community. I believe the real reason is that we have continued with the attitude of people should “come and hear” instead of the church “going and telling.” But what do we tell? Do we tell them that they are bad and need to straighten up? Or do we tell them come and join the church and watch people fight and bicker over things that are of no eternal importance? While we decide the world around us is searching desperately for answers to the question: “Is there any hope?” I say yes there is hope only in the gospel of Christ! Not in another program or activity. But, how do we convey that to the world without hope? We must become involved and engaged with those who are seeking hope. In our schools and community there are so many that need to know they are loved, not condemned. People need to see the body of Christ loving and caring for each other and those who are desperately seeking to fill the void in their life. The gospel is the good news that the loving heavenly Father has sent His only Son to redeem us from our hopelessness. But, those outside the church will never care what we know until they know that we care. Caring not only for them, but for each other also. May God bless us as we strive to be His hands and feet to the lost world around us. Pastor Glenn WELCOME GIFTS Cody & Melissa and their children Malachi & Riley will be arriving Sunday, March 8th. We will be collecting paper goods and household supplies (toilet paper, paper towels, cleaning supplies), and gift cards to Westcliffe Market, Family Dollar, and restaurant cards. They are calling this a Farewell Tour as many of the WOF favorites will be retiring. COME on Thursday, March 19th at 6:00 pm for a movie night. Bring a friend and come have fun!! Heart to Heart Women’s Ministry In the book, Glimmers of Grace, Luci Swindoll wrote the following: “True friendships are characterized by grace, truth, forgiveness, unselfishness, boundaries, care and love in gigantic and mutual proportion. Although they require hard work and consistency from each party, we enjoy the best of the best in life because when friends come alongside, more light is added to our path. Two are better than one! We lay down our lives for our friends, they lay down their lives for us, and in the end we all find true life. “ As wonderful and as treasured as our friends are to us, the best friend we can have who will never ever leave us, or let us down is the Lord. Do you love the Lord in gigantic and mutual proportion? Do you work as hard and as consistently for Him as He works for you? Are you using His light for your path? We can change any negative answers to those questions simply by developing our communication with Him through prayer and through studying His Word. Heart to Heart offers you and your friends an opportunity to grow in your communication with Him through: Mugs and Muffins: Two prayer groups that gather on Thursday mornings to raise praises to the Lord for His loving care, and to pray for each other, for our church, for our community, state and nation. Check your bulletin for the location and time, then join one of the groups – prayer will increase your intimacy with the Lord. Bible Study: Women’s daytime group meets on Tuesday mornings at 9:15 am in the Fellowship Hall – a study of how we should live in end times. A Co-Ed group meets on Wednesday evenings and they are studying the cultural issues of today from a Biblical point of view. An evening group meets at 6:30 pm on Thursday evening and they are studying the book One Thousand Gifts. These are some great opportunities to develop a deeper understanding of the gracious and loving character of our Lord. Friendships grow and deepen when we spend time with each other. Check out the opportunities to develop a deeper relationship with God and get the best of the best for your life. Don’t forget about the opportunity to be the hands of the Lord by serving the residents at Vali on Craft Day alongside Terry Lee. Second Wednesday of the month at 11:00 am.
