Lectionary Readings for Sunday 8 March 2015
3rd Sunday in Lent
Psalm 19 The revelation of God through Creation, and through the
Commandments.
Exodus 20:1-17 The Lord God seals his covenant with the Israelites, in the third
month of their flight from Egypt into the wilderness. Through Moses he delivers to
them the ‘Ten Commandments’, laws governing their relationship with God and with
each other.
I Corinthians 1:18-25 Paul has urged the Corinthians not to form factions by following
different leaders. Traditional Jews and Greeks demanded signs or intellectual
wisdom, but our main focus must be on the crucified and risen Christ. The power and
wisdom of God set aside for all human cleverness and strength.
John 2:13-22 Jesus enters the Temple at Jerusalem during the Passover, an annual
ritual observed by Jews to ‘relive’ their deliverance from Egypt. He is outraged at the
temple-based profiteering practices, exploiting the poor in the name of religion, and
drives them from the Temple. His challenging words “destroy this temple, and in
three days I will raise it up”, are not understood by the Jewish leaders.
