St. Francis of Assisi Parish March 8, 2015 • Third Sunday of Lent ...................................................................................... Making Connections N o ma er how many mes I hear the story of the woman at the well, I am deeply moved, because Jesus comes to this woman where she is, in all her brokenness, going about her daily chores, and he invites her into rela onship—and because she dares to say “yes.” That encounter reminds me that Jesus offers the same “living water” to me, to all of us. Jesus offers us rela onship. And we, too, can say “yes.” We all want to be closer to God—that’s why we gather here at St. Francis for Mass. We seek rela onship with our God, whether it’s through Eucharist, or making connec ons with the people of God who serve, surround, and welcome us at Mass each weekend, or whether it’s walking consciously with our God as we go about our daily lives, or taking me for prayer or medita on—or…. Mee ng people where they are on their faith journey, where they are in their rela onship with God, and helping to bring them closer to God—that’s what we strive to do at St. Francis. It’s what informs our ministries, including those I help to coordinate. When I put together the weekly bulle n; or work on a post for our Facebook page; or design a flyer for a ministry or event; or work with Peggy or Fr. Ken on their blogs, or with our webmaster, Ray Ibe, on material for our website, or with members of our parish staff and Pastoral and Finance Councils to plan for our Covenant of Sharing Commitment Weekend, I’m doing my bit to help connect people with all that we have to offer here at St. Francis—people who are coming to church already, as well as people who are as far away as the internet can reach. When I work as part of a team to plan and host our Welcome Brunches, our Parish Picnic, our Women’s Day Retreat, our Lenten Retreat, or our Volunteer Apprecia on Dinner—I have the joy of working with some great volunteers and fellow staff members; but even more, I get to witness community grow, as people connect, share their stories, share a meal.... I am always touched and inspired when newcomers at our Welcome Brunches share their stories of how they found St. Francis—o en a er a long and deliberate search for a parish home, or a er a long me away from the Church, or a er a terrible loss, but some mes stumbling upon us and feeling at Weekend Masses Saturday Vigil 5:15 pm Sunday 7:30 am, 9:30 am, Noon Weekday Masses (in St. Clare Chapel) 12:10 pm home at once. However they find us, they share that they felt welcomed, and that it ma ers to them that all are welcomed here. You and I reaching out in welcome, which is such a simple thing to do, helps bring people closer to God. Yes, you are part of our ministry here at St. Francis. Thank you for helping to “pay it forward.” Blessed Lent, Fran Anderson, Administra ve Associate “What are your Lenten plans?” T his ques on—”What are your Lenten plans?” confronted me at my first Adult Confirma on class many years ago. Huh? I sat quietly, along with everybody else, because nobody had a plan beyond giving up chocolate. But the idea seed was planted, and each year I try to come up with something to give meaning to the season. This year, I found myself in the library browsing for something to read. I found The Death of Ivan Ilyich by Leo Tolstoy. I love Leo. In the introduc on was a quote by Maeterlinck that I think is profound and appropriate for the Lenten season: “We deliver death into the dim hands of insƟnct and we grant it only one hour of our intelligence. It is surprising that the idea of death, which should be the most perfect and the most luminous, remains the flimsiest of our ideas.... To fathom its abysses we wait unƟl the most enfeebled, the most disordered moments of our life.” Oliver Stone, the great neuroscien st and writer, has recently learned that, at age 80, he is terminally ill with cancer, and he wrote about how he will spend his remaining me. Why can’t we, too, think about the me le to us—but before the doctor calls with bad news? How would we re-make our life? Who would we spend me with, and who would we call to renew a neglected friendship? For me, the Lenten plan this year is to walk along with my friend Jesus during his most difficult me. Maybe I’ll learn a thing or two about how to live. —Jacquie Embs, Bookkeeper Reconciliation Saturdays 4:00 - 5:00 pm or by appointment Church Hours M-Th 9:00 am - 3:00 pm Fri 9:00 am - 1:30 pm Opportunities and Information Draw Closer to Me Be Part of a Life-Saving Partnership I n the Liturgy Team’s discussion and planning for Lent this year we talked about all the thousands of decisions we make every day, and how just by changing some of those decisions we can draw closer to God during Lent—instead of “adding” or “giving up” something else or making a “New Year’s type resolu on.” We could just become more aware of the thousands of decisions we make each day—what me to get up? What to have for lunch? Where to shop? Who to call on the phone? Who to spend me with? And then, during Lent, change some or at least one of those decisions… in order to draw closer to God. Ahh! That’s the crux of Lent (no pun intended!): to draw closer to God and grow in that rela onship. March 21 and 22 After All the Masses S t. Francis has established a “SOURCE Partners Program” with BloodSource of Sacramento. Every me you make a source plasma dona on, BloodSource will match it with a financial dona on back to our Parish. Not only will you be saving and changing lives with your dona on, you will also be contribu ng to the vital support of St. Francis, as these donated funds from BloodSource will be used to benefit and support our Outreach Ministries. As part of your reflec on during this Lenten season, consider how dona ng this “gi of life” could be a personal way of suppor ng our St. Francis mission of being Eucharist to each other, and reaching beyond ourselves to care for those who are ill or suffering. The ques on for the Liturgy Team then became how could we express this visually, in our church? We talked about using shi ing colors, to reflect the transi ons and changes we experience throughout Lent. The large banner that you see hanging in the church is a result of that discussion. I designed this Lenten banner by changing the pale e of colors within a photo to the Lenten shades of violet and purple, and then Photoshopping it into pixels so it looks like a mosaic— thousands of li le one-inch fabric squares represen ng the decisions we make every day—like the mosaic of our lives. On March 21 and 22, visit the table at the bo om of the steps of the church and talk with a representa ve from BloodSource, as well as with our Co-Chair of Ministries of Care, Kathy Policky, who will answer your ques ons and give you more informa on about our “SOURCE Partner Program.” Please stop by and learn more about how your gi can make a difference in someone’s life and, at the same me, contribute to the support of our St. Francis community. On Ash Wednesday we heard God say to us, “Return to me with your whole heart!” Our God is longing for us, yearning for us, desiring us. What is keeping you from drawing closer to Jesus? To God? If the Earth were divided equally among all of us, each person would receive 4.5 acres. Everything you need to survive would have to come from these 4.5 acres. It takes 22.3 acres to maintain the average American lifestyle. Do we really need all the stuff stored in our closets, cabinets and garages? Stations of the Cross Fridays in Lent 3:00pm and 6:00pm in the Church W e invite you to join our parish community in praying the Sta ons of the Cross. What Can You Do? Commit to weekly spiritual prac ces of de-clu ering in order to cul vate the goal of living simply. Each week the bulle n will provide a prac cal ac on to guide you in various areas of your life. These ac ons can lead you throughout your Lenten journey to the grace of Easter which restores peace and reconcilia on to the world and all its inhabitants. Prayer for and Assurance of Grace G od of Living Water, you call us to come and drink. So why do we sit here and complain that there is not enough water? Spiritual Practices for the Journey Week 1. Food You call us to strike the rocks of our world and let your Living Water flow. Go though your cabinets to find food that you have not used and will probably not use. Check the expira on date and donate those items that have not expired to a local food bank. But we do not trust enough that the spring is there. We want to find the water on our own, using our own wisdom. You call us to share the Water of Life with the world around us. Week 2. Toys: Kids/Adults Sort through your children’s toys and donate outgrown items to charity. Look through your own books, CDs movies, unused spor ng equipment and donate. But we believe that the water is limited, not abundant and so we are tempted to save it for ourselves. For all the mes we turn away from your Water, for all the mes we sully the Water by misusing it, for all the mes we let others go thirsty instead of offering a drink, Week 3. Clothing Go through your closets and eliminate clothing you haven’t worn in a year and donate to charity. Forgive us we pray. ... me of silent prayer... The Water of Life flows with abundance to fill us with hope, to cleanse us of our guilt, to float us to a new life. Washed in the Living Water, we are forgiven and set free to live abundant life.
