Nana Opoku House of Faith International [email protected] 18-19 March Words of Peace Page 2 From Pastor Sarah As I write this, the branches are covered with ice and my yard looks like a skating rink. March has begun and the world is beautiful but treacherous. This has felt like a long winter for many of us and the prospect of yet another snow day has me feeling a little stir crazy. Yet we all know how March goes. By the end of the month, trees will be budding and pops of crocus colors will dot the ground. We’ll be able to get outside again and enjoy the fresh air and the shift to spring. It’s Lent and if you haven’t figured it out already, at church we’re focusing on forgiveness. I’ve been reading widely on the topic and have found that a personal spiritual focus on forgiveness has served me well already. Hopefully the people I love would say the same. One book I read is one I’ve returned to many times in my life: Henri Nowen’s “The Return of the Prodigal Son.” He wrote it after seeing a Rembrandt painting that struck something in his soul. Nowen says this about the Prodigal Son story: “The parable presents us with no happy ending. Instead it leaves us face to face with one of life’s hardest spiritual choices: to trust or not to trust God’s all-forgiving love.” This is the challenge of Lent. Turning away from habits and behaviors that do no spiritual good, repenting for the past and asking for a new future all become easier – possible – if you trust God’s allforgiving love. This is something that your faith community can help with. I can preach about how trustworthy God’s love is. Friends can testify to their own experiences of forgiveness. But ultimately, you are the only one who can decide to trust God’s all-forgiving love for yourself and live as if it is true. It’s a bit like sitting on March 1 watching the ice pile up. Even as I ask “will this ever end?” I trust that it will. Come Easter, we’ll all be rejoicing. Be at Peace, Pastor Sarah March Words of Peace Page 3 A WORD FROM OUR COUNCIL PRESIDENT Cathy Kroohs Is anyone else ready for spring? I certainly am. However it is still winter, and we are observing Lent as we wait and prepare for Easter. We have Lenten soup suppers and Lenten vespers on Wednesday evenings. Four small groups have begun meeting around the theme of forgiveness, and Pr. Sarah's sermons will focus on forgiveness as well. I hope that, even if you are unable to attend the suppers or participate in a small group, you will hear and experience the forgiveness that is one sign of the incredible love of God. At the same time, Peace and the surrounding community have areas where we could use some help. Anna and Don Hartmayer lead our Ministry of Property, and while they are doing an amazing job they could do even more with some help. Are you able and willing to change burnt out light bulbs? Can you do minor plumbing repairs? Would you be willing to meet the service person coming to do some repair? Not everything requires special skills or equipment, but additional hands would make Don and Anna's work much lighter. Catch them on a Sunday morning or e-mail them at [email protected] . Spring means that the outdoor property work will be picking up, too. If you are willing to mow, pull weeds, trim shrubs or do something else outdoors, just contact Sue Clark and let her know. You can talk to her on Sunday morning or e-mail her at [email protected] . Peace is located in one of the wealthiest areas of the US, but many people in our community are unable to maintain their own homes. Rebuilding Together makes life better for low-income homeowners every year. If you are interested, please contact Rebuilding Together Arlington/Fairfax/Falls Church at [email protected] or Rebuilding Together Alexandria at [email protected] . Peace has sometimes sent teams to work with Rebuilding Together; if you are interested in recruiting or leading a team from Peace, just let us know. ACCA (the Annandale Christian Community for Action) assists our neighbors in several ways. Can you donate a Saturday morning and some muscles by picking up donated furniture or delivering it to families in need? Just contact Ron Maree at [email protected] or Don Di Spirito at [email protected] . Do you enjoy driving and have some free time on a week day? ACCA provides rides to and from medical appointments for people who have no transportation. To volunteer as a driver, contact Ray Hanlein at [email protected] or Madeline Crytzer at [email protected]. The plywood manger scene that we use for Christmas is in need of some repair so that no one ends up with splinters. Is there anyone who would like to take on this project? AND ... while all this is going on, the nominating committee will be inviting people to serve Peace on the council, in various ministries, and in other ways; I'm sure they would be happy to accept volunteers. Please consider whether this is a way that you feel called to respond to God's love and grace. Having just suggested all of these possibilities, I will end by thanking you for everything that you already do - at Peace, in your homes and at work, and in your community. March Words of Peace Page 4 Strata is a family of layered casserole dishes in American cuisine. Don't have time for breakfast Easter Sunday? Join us for the 2nd Annual Peace Easter Sunday Strata Breakfast. 9:00 a.m. in Fellowship Hall How does it work? You bring a Strata or fruit or pastry and your appetite and we all enjoy fellowship and fun and breakfast. You can bring the strata the night before and put it in the refrigerator and we will heat it up Sunday morning or you can just bring it with you on Sunday and we will reheat it for breakfast. The most common modern variant is a brunch dish, similar to a quiche or frittata, made from a mixture which mainly consists of bread, eggs and cheese. It may also include meat or vegetables. The usual preparation requires the bread to be layered with the filling in order to produce layers (strata). Other recipes merely require that the ingredients are mixed together, What is strata? So glad you asked: See the recipes at the be- like a savory bread pudding. A low link. beaten egg mixture is then poured over the ingredients. http://allrecipes.com/recipes/breakfast-and-brunch/eggrecipes/breakfast-strata/ Call Anna Hartmayer at 703-599-0482 or 571-280-6820 with any questions. The dish requires a rest of anywhere between one hour and overnight before it is baked. It is served warm. Strata Recipe Ingredients: - 12 thick slices white bread, cut into 1 in. cubes - 1/4 cup crumbled cooked bacon - 2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese - 12 eggs -2 1/2 cups half-and-half - 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard -1 1/2 cups chopped fresh mushrooms (optional) You can put sausage or ham in instead of bacon or for a meatless variety you can add veggies instead. Directions: 1. Toss cubed bread with bacon, cheese, and mushrooms, and pour into a 9x13 inch baking dish. Whisk together eggs, half-and-half, and mustard until smooth, then pour evenly over cubed bread. Cover dish with plastic wrap, and refrigerate overnight. 2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). 3. Remove plastic wrap from the baking dish, and bake strata in preheated oven until the top is golden brown, and the eggs are set, about 1 hour. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Words of Peace March Page 5 Altar Service Volunteers Notice If you are one of the wonderful volunteers who cleans and re-sets the altar after services, please understand how grateful we are to you for your service. But apparently some of the volunteers do not realize that they are expected to take the altar linens home, launder and iron them, and then return them the next week. If for any reason you can't do this (for example, if you don't have a washer or an iron or whatever reason) please just let Tammy Heppner ([email protected]) know so that something can be worked out. Thank you. Vacation Bible School planning is underway! This summer’s theme will be “A Wrinkle in Time: Dare to be Different”. VBS will be the last week in July--July 27 to July 31, hosted by St. Alban’s. There are plenty of opportunities to be involved, from teaching to crafts, from snack preparation to playing and teaching music. In addition, this will be Kate Lauderdale’s last year as director, so if that interests you, please let Kate know and you can work together this year. Kate has said if anyone from Peace Lutheran wants to head up VBS 2016, there is the opportunity to move the program to Peace, as years ago location for VBS used to alternate. Also, Kate is looking for someone to head up the after care program for 10-15 kids. It would be from noon to 4pm. Kids would bring their own lunch, but the program would supply snack. The volunteer can structure it as they would like, but the recommended format is lunch, a movie, crafts and outside games. Please contact Kate Lauderdale at [email protected] or Miranda Teel at [email protected] with any questions. March Words of Peace Page 7 A new members class will start April 12th between worship services (9:15 am to 10:15 am). Sunday afternoon, February 2nd, a group of Peace Lutheran church members, along with a few friends and neighbors, gathered at AMF Annandale for three hours of fun and fellowship, bowling 9Pin No-Tap – a special bowling format where 9 or 10 pins knocked down on the first ball count as a strike. Ray Marquardt did a wonderful job as event coordinator, setting up teams, assigning lanes, and determining the winners. Tracy Schultz, who couldn’t bowl because of her knee, served as spectator and overall cheerleader. Top honors this time around went to Yeison Schultz who had the highest 3-game series among the youth, Donna Thiessen who was high among the adult women, and Don Hartmayer who was high among the adult men. Before and during competition, Ray, who bowls weekly at AMF Annandale on Tuesday nights in a league that's been in existence for 50 years, made his league membership card available to anyone who wanted to get some "nourishment" at a reduced price. Everyone had a good time, and many said they would like to do it again, maybe in the summer. Ray says, “There were a number of smiley faces.” March Words of Peace Page 9 Afternoon of Bowling pictures, continued... Through the ELCA good gifts program you can buy chickens, pigs, goats, sheep, or even a cow starting at $10 and up depending on the animal. When you purchase an animal on the ELCA web site https://community.elca.org/GoodGiftsAnimals you will be sent a donor card with a picture of your animal as a thank you. We will take those cards and mount them on a display made by our Sunday School children and show them with your name in the narthex for Easter. If you want us to assist you with ordering, or place the order for you we will be available in the fellowship hall after church each Sunday in Lent starting on March 1 to take orders. You can use a credit card, check or cash to make your purchase. You could make this giving a part of your Lenten journey and get the family involved in raising money to buy an animal to assist another family in need. This will be a fun way to get children and adults involved in helping others while we journey through Lent and get ready to decorate our Church for Easter.
