Sacrament of Baptism for Infants: Baptisms are scheduled
after meeting with a priest. Parents or guardians and sponsors
are required to attend a baptism class prior to the baptism.
Baptisms are at 11:00 a.m. in English on the 3rd Saturday of
the month and in Spanish on the 2nd Saturday.
Sacrament of Matrimony: Weddings are scheduled by
meeting with a priest at least six months prior to the wedding.
Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick: Call the Parish Office. A
minister is also available for pastoral visits and to bring Holy
Communion to our parish sick and homebound.
Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA): Adults seeking to
complete initiation or inquiring about becoming a Catholic may
call the Parish Office for more information.

From the Pastor’s Desk...
On this Third Sunday of Lent, we enter into a
reflection on what God’s commands mean to us.
Are they a list of does and don’ts? Or are they
something that we take to heart and allow to consume us with
zeal for the work that God has set before us? Let us pray today
for the wisdom to know how God truly wants us to live.
Today, Year B’s Lenten invitation to covenant-love features
the Ten Commandments, whose twofold call to love of God and
neighbor takes flesh in the Person of Jesus. In Jesus’ example
of unconditional love, this invitation becomes an enduring model
for the baptismal commitment of Jesus’ disciples.
Our culture assesses worth and assigns status on the
basis of where and how one lives, what someone owns and
wears, how much a person has and spends. Choosing instead
to lay down one’s life for one’s friends, while forgiving one’s
executioners, must surely seem foolishness and weakness. Yet,
as Saint Paul reminds us, Christ crucified chose precisely this
foolishness. Christian faith proclaims Jesus to be the power of
God and the wisdom of God.
By baptism, or baptismal renewal, at the forthcoming
Easter Vigil, we will profess our faith that the foolishness of God
is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is
stronger that human strength. Further, we will commit ourselves
to act on the covenant revealed in Sinai’s Ten Commandments
and made flesh in Jesus’ self-sacrificing love. Therefore, we
should welcome Lent’s spring-cleaning, Jesus’ cleansing of the
temple of our lives, that we may become living temples from
which God’s praise ascends and in which God’s weary children
can find refreshment. Knowing just how much cleansing must
take place for that to happen, how comforting today’s Gospel
reminder that Jesus, Who invites us to discipleship, does not
need anyone to testify about human nature, that Jesus
understood it well and loves us unconditionally.

Scholarship from Catholic Daughters
The Court St. Pius X #1866 of the Catholic Daughters of
the Americas is pleased to announce their annual $500
scholarship competition for students in 8th grade in public or
private schools. This year’s essays, titled “Just Be a Blessing”,
should discuss the virtues and qualities needed during high
school to be a blessing to others. Application forms must be
submitted with essays. To receive an application or request
more information, contact the CDA Scholarship Committee at
[email protected] or 230-4726.
Applications and essays must be postmarked by April 15,
2015 and sent to CDA Scholarship Committee, P.O. Box
243953, Anchorage, Alaska 99524-3953. The winning essay
will be submitted to the National Catholic Daughters of the
Americas for another possible $500 award. Incomplete and/or
late applications will not be considered.

11:15 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Prior to the evening Stations, soup

Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast
The Knights of Columbus will be serving a pancake
breakfast next Sunday, March 15 after the 9:30
a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Masses. Along with the
pancakes they will also be serving scrambled eggs,
bacon, sausage, hash brown potatoes, orange juice, and
coffee. The price is $6.00 per person or $30.00 for 5 or more
immediate family members. So come on down to the Parish
Hall for a delicious meal and fellowship with your friends.
The Annunciation of the Lord - Solemn High Mass
Celebrate the Annunciation of the Lord with a Dominican Rite
Solemn High Mass at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 25.
Living Stations of the Cross
Living Stations of the Cross from our Spanish community will
take place on Friday, March 27 at 7:00 p.m., following the
weekly soup supper. There will be translations in English.
Centennial Celebration in March
March 19 is the Solemnity of St. Joseph, the man God
called to be the head of the Holy Family, and the protector of
the Catholic Church. So we have chosen to pray a Novena to
St. Joseph in the month of March. The novena will be March
11-19, during all of the Masses.
“Feeding the Hungry” is this month’s theme. It fits well
with the tradition of the preparation of food altars in honor of
St. Joseph. During the month of March, in addition to hosting a
food altar for the Solemnity of St. Joseph, we are coordinating
volunteers to serve dinner at the Brother Francis shelter each
night (except Fridays). More information is available at the
Parish Office. Please consider partaking in this service as part
of your Lenten journey. Notice that for the month of March the
Holy Family statue will be receiving your food donations for
the food pantry. St. Joseph’s Table will be set up on the
weekend of March 21-22 for the food for St. Francis House.

Special Collection This Week: Parish Life
Today’s collection for Parish Life helps offset costs of parish
events, such as our Thanksgiving dinner, Sunday coffee and
donuts, and ministry and volunteer receptions and dinners.
Please consider supporting these events.
Food Donations for the St. Francis House
The St. Francis House provides approximately 115 families
with emergency food supplies each day. The greatest needs
at this time are: canned corn, carrots, mixed vegetables,
peaches, pears, mixed fruit, and pineapple, along with white
and brown rice, dry pinto beans, and oatmeal. Non-perishable
food donations may be placed in the baskets by the statue of
the Holy Family or brought to the Parish Office.
Respect for Life
Brittany Maynard's decision to end her life by selfinflicted means reminds us of the tragic reality of
suicide and the injustice of laws encouraging physicianassisted suicide. Such laws facilitate the making of
unreasonable decisions among those feeling weak and
vulnerable as they face a serious disease or old age. Such laws
encourage us to abandon the vulnerable to a hastened death,
rather than building up the needed human solidarity and mutual
support critical to journeying through such important personal
moments of crisis. Such laws undermine the noble profession of
medicine, redirecting health care workers away from their core
mission of healing and toward the works of death and killing.
What Brittany chose to do was motivated by fear. She
feared suffering. She feared pain. She feared losing control. In a
culture that labels assisted suicide as a compassionate choice,
she was made to feel that by attacking her own life, she was
gaining control over her life, but this was entirely false.
When society fosters such fears so that we believe our
best option is to kill ourselves, this is not true compassion. It is a
false compassion that does not accompany the sufferer, but
relegates him or her to a life without hope. It is, in fact, a form of
abandonment by the medical community. It is not a “death with
dignity” but the frightening indignity of verbal engineering
pretending that violence is not really violence. Her death
represents a tragedy that tears at our shared humanity, and a
failure on the part of all of us in allowing unjust laws like the one
in Oregon through which such violent and hurtful actions are
granted legal status and the veneer of social acceptability.

Morning of Reflection for Women

La Bella Brigata Dinner
St. Catherine of Siena CUF Chapter invites you to “An Evening
with Sheen” (a live reenactment of a classic Archbishop Fulton
Sheen television show, performed by Mario Bird). Join us for

Pilgrimage to Rome and Assisi
Fr. Leo, pastor of St. Benedict Parish, and Bob McMorrow,
Lumen Christi’s Church History teacher, will be leading a
