Jesus Christ
Here & now
For Gippsland
It is now March, and the season of Lent is upon us.
Lent is traditionally the forty days before Easter. The
beginning of Lent was marked by Ash Wednesday,
which we celebrated this year on 18 February and lasts
till the Saturday before Easter Sunday.
Lent is the period in the church year when we follow Jesus ‘into the wilderness’.
It is the time when we choose to face our own demons – to come face to face
with the things in our own lives that would tempt us to achieve God’s way in our
own power, when we choose again the way of Christ - the way of love and grace,
justice and truth.
Lent is time when we turn a light on the beatitudes of Jesus:
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat
down his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them,
saying:
‘
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be
satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is
the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds
of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your
reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were
before you.’ Matthew 5: 1-11
The liturgical colour during Lent is purple – the colour of penitence, prayer and
repentance, the time of prayer, of openness to God. It is the time of choosing
again to walk the pilgrim way.
I encourage you to live into this season of Lent, to take time for personal
reflection, to come to the Lenten study series.
And as Palm Sunday, Holy Week and the Easter period approach I invite you to be
part of the Easter journey. Join in the services of Holy Week and Easter as
together we live the story of God’s grace and allow the story of God’s grace to live
in and through us.
Go well and may God bless you
