Pope Francis
In a memorable address to those who work in the
Vatican . . . [shortly before Christmas] Pope Francis
identified 15 spiritual diseases for people to be aware of :
...
~The Disease of Excessive Activity
It is the disease of those who, like Martha in the Gospel,
‘lose themselves in their work, inevitably neglecting “what
is better”; “sitting at Jesus’s feet”.’ The Pope recalls that
Jesus ‘called His disciples to “rest a little”, because
neglecting necessary rest brings anxiety and stress’.
~The Diseases of Mental and Spiritual ‘Petrification’
It is the disease of those who ‘lose their internal peace,
their vivacity and audacity, to hide under papers, and
become ‘procedural machines’ instead of ‘men of God’,
unable to ‘weep with those who weep and rejoice with
those who rejoice!’. . .
. . . More in next week’s bulletin.

As we continue along our Lenten
journey our students are focusing on prayer
(“lifting up”), fasting (“giving up”) and
almsgiving (“helping up”). We strive to live
our Lenten promises. Pope Francis recently
reminded us, "Lent is a strong point. It's a
turning point that can favor within all of us a change, a conversion. We
all need to improve, to change, to change for the better.”
Last week’s gospel virtue at school was Loyalty. Many of us
have pledged a Lenten sacrifice and this beautiful virtue calls us to be
faithful to that promise. A simple definition of loyalty states: “Standing
by God, family and friends, no matter what happens.” We see loyalty
standing strong in the lives of the saints, many of whom were martyred
for their loyalty to their faith. During Lent, we pray that we will always
be proud to call ourselves followers of Christ and will have the courage
to spread the Good News of God’s love, wherever we go.
Our teachers will attend LA Religious Conference this coming
weekend where they will renew their spirit, nurture faith growth and be
empowered to continue molding students into actively engaged
Catholic Christians.
Last week, our second
graders celebrated the birthday of
Theodore Geisel, Dr. Seuss.
They enjoyed reading many of
their favorite Dr. Seuss books,
especially The Cat in the Hat.
At St. Gregory the Great Catholic School, we are proud to offer an
education that is distinctive among educational institutions in our
community. Our students learn in a culture of faith, academics, and
service inspired by a focus on learning and living our Catholic faith;
supporting students to meet high academic standards; and reaching
out in a spirit of service to those in need. We pray for God’s blessing on
our ministry of Catholic education.

Please consider spending one hour with Jesus
in the Blessed Sacrament.
Jesus said to St. Margaret Mary:
“Make reparation for the ingratitude of
men. Spend an hour in prayer to appease
divine justice, to implore mercy for sinners, to
honor Me, to console Me for My bitter suffering
when abandoned by My Apostles when they
did not watch one hour with Me.”
