HAVE SOME QUESTIONS? WE THOUGHT YOU MIGHT. Why this location? The Dubuque community continues to grow and we want to continue to grow with it. After much review, it was recognized that the community growth has expanded on the western side of the city and felt this was good location to meet many of the community’s needs. Did the Y purchase the former fitness facility? No, we did not purchase the former business. We did purchase the equipment inside the building and will took over the lease of the former site. How does this further the mission of the Y in the Dubuque community? At the Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA, our cause is strengthening community. By providing a second location to our members, we believe we are doing just that. We want to make our services convenient and accommodating to our growing community. I have a membership at the Y, what does this mean? As a current Y member, you will now get the benefit of two locations. Check-in system at our West location will be the same scan card you use at the main facility. Classes will remain the same at the Y and you will now get the added classes at the West location. The West location does not have a pool. Are kids allowed at the West location? Yes, kids are allowed. Children must follow the same set of rules to use the gym equipment at the main location. All youth age 10-18 must have a youth orientation to enter the wellness center. Youth Orientations are held the 1st and 14th of month. 5:00 PM on weekdays. 12:00 PM on weekends. Youth under the age of 10 are not allowed in the Wellness Center Children under the age of 8, will need to go to the Child Watch area. Can I register for youth programming at the West location? Yes. We will be operating the same system we do at our main facility. You may call either location to do so. What will the hours be? The hours are the same as the Main location on Booth Street. Hours are listed on page 2. What's next for the Y in Dubuque? We are always looking for new ways to grow and expand; from classes, programs, services and more. Please stay tuned for more! That’s why child care and early learning programs at the Y focus on holistically nurturing child development by providing a safe and healthy place to learn foundational skills, develop healthy, trusting relationships and build self-reliance through the Y values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Children are like sponges – they watch and absorb knowledge, skills and values from everything and everyone around them. At the Y, we believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for quality of life and future success. That’s why our child care, afterschool and Child Watch programs are staffed with people who understand the cognitive, physical and social development of kids, the need children have to feel connected and supported in trying new things, and the caring and reinforcement parents and families need to help each other. At the Y, babies develop trust and security, preschoolers experience early literacy and learn about their world, and school-age kids make friends, learn new skills and do homework. Most importantly, children learn how to be their best selves. That makes for confident kids today, and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow. The Sky Tours Experience is perfect for: Family gatherings, mothers and daughters, fathers and sons, sisters and brothers, grandpas and grandmas! Birthday bashes, parties and celebrations, corporate events, Corporate team building & special events. Leadership at the Dubuque Community YMCA/YMCA began discussing the possibility of expanding the land use of Union Park with a zipline tour in early 2010. The setting alone – a 100-acre lush, green valley – seemed to inspire the perfect union of nature and adventure. Add its rich history into the mix and it elevates the experience to a whole new level. The Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA contracted with Experienced-Based Learning, Inc. (EBL)* to design and build the initial 7-zipline course. EBL resourcefully used Union Park’s natural valleys, ravines, hillsides, and bluffs to create an eco-friendly progression of ziplines through the forested hills and valleys. In May 2011, with construction of the Sky Tours Zipline completed, guides were trained and certified and the 7-zipline course was opened to the public for business. In January 2013, two more ziplines were added, bringing the total to nine. The new lines, lying essentially within the footprint of the existing course, cross over the main valley and return, running above and perpendicular to the existing lines of “The Duel” which runs through the valley, creating the Midwest’s first double layered ziplines. The construction added an additional 1,600’ of distance to the course and raised the maximum height experienced to 70’. Sky Tours is a wholly owned project of the Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA. All profits resulting from its operation will be used to advance the mission of the Y in the Dubuque community. For more information or to register go to www.skytourszipline.com or call 563.484.4248. UNION PARK HISTORY Union Park, the site for the Sky Tours Zipline, has had a rich and interesting history over its 12 decades of existence: Over the years, it has evolved from farmland to Stewart Park to Union Park to Y Camp to the addition of a Zipline Eco-Adventure. In many ways, the development of Union Park more than a century ago, seems to have served as a precursor to the depth of interest in culture and the arts that Dubuque reveals today. Thanks to donated land in 1890 from William G Stewart, the park opened on April 26, 1891. Additional land was purchased by 1908. The park became a popular destination with the entertainment held at the Mammoth Theater and the children’s playground. Devastation hit on July 9, 1919. Weather predictions called for possible thunderstorms on that Wednesday afternoon, but usual summer activities were continued as planned. The first drops of rain in the afternoon quickly turned into a downpour. Picnickers, still feeling secure, ran for nearby shelter, unaware that the cloudburst had created a wall of water that soon tore into the park. The Mammoth Theater, which stretched across the valley, inadvertently served as a dam, blocking the water’s dispersion and making the flood worse. Concrete sidewalks were ripped up by the fury of the torrent. The massive wall of water demolished the merry-go-round and backed up behind the theater to a height estimated to be twenty feet before pushing on downhill. According to the National Weather Bureau, 3.87 inches of rain fell that afternoon, most in less than a two-hour period. Five people died that day at Union Park, and an estimated $15,000 in damage was done. Some of the park was repaired and reopened. However with the new “Eagle Point Park” gaining popularity, by 1934, it was decided that Union Park would close. Much of the park was dismantled. On September 5, 1946 the YMCA and the Boy Scouts purchased the land; cabins were constructed on the hillsides, along with a mess hall, swimming pool, stables, and bathrooms. Soon after the completion of the project, the Scouts chose to erect their own campgrounds, leaving the YMCA with the 100-acre Union Park property. In early 2010 the Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA began discussing the possibility of expanding the land use of Union Park with a zipline tour. In May 2011, construction of the Sky Tours Zipline was completed; guides were trained and certified; and the zipline was opened to the public for business. 563.556.3371 WINTER 2014 | DUBUQUE COMMUNITY YMCA/YWCA 563.582.5541 DUBUQUE COMMUNITY YMCA/YWCA WEST 15 HEALTHY LIVING WORKPLACE WELLNESS PARTNERSHIP In an effort to better serve the community, the Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA proudly introduces our newest Healthy Living offer “Workplace Wellness” to encourage and enhance the health and well-being of Dubuque residents. “Workplace Wellness” enhances your employees’ dedication and morale by demonstrating your commitment to their health and happiness. “Workplace Wellness” operates on a joint partnership between you and the Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA. How about a fun, invigorating workout in the pool? Swimming skills not necessary. (Off-site: Quality Inn, E. Dubuque) AQUA ZUMBA Known as the Zumba "pool party," Aqua Zumba gives new meaning to the idea of an invigorating workout. Splashing, stretching, twisting, even shouting, laughing, hooting and hollering are often heard during an Aqua Zumba class. Integrating the Zumba formula and philosophy with traditional aqua fitness disciplines, Aqua Zumba blends it all together into a safe, challenging, water-based workout that’s cardio-conditioning, body-toning, and most of all, exhilarating beyond belief. (Off-site: Quality Inn, E. Dubuque) DEEP WATER AEROBICS This class, in the deep end of the large pool, can provide aerobic benefits without putting stress on joints. Class participants should feel comfortable in deep water. Aqua Jogger belts will be provided on a first come first serve basis. PEDAL FOR A PURPOSE Take advantage of the many benefits of the aquatics environment by participating in the Pedal for a Purpose Class. Cycling in the water reduces pressure on joints and on the lower back. The hydrostatic pressure and constant water massage increases blood flow and enhances circulation. Great for those with knee/hip replacements. SLOW & EASY AQUACISE Held in our waist deep warm water pool, this class includes a series of exercises for the entire body. It is designed to use the support and resistance of water. Swimming skills not necessary. Water temp around 90° and 3’- 3 ½’ deep. WARM WATER AEROBICS For the Health Seeker looking for an alternative to the cooler pool while needing a little more intense exercise than stretching. Warm Water Aerobics is the perfect “middle of the road” exercise program for our water aerobic classes. Water temp around 90° and 3’- 3 ½’ deep. Want more coaching? Schedule private sessions with the swim coach. 1 Private session included each month. A new session is offered every 4 months. Ages 18+. DAILY LOG The Daily Log is a great way to keep track of how many miles are swam/walked during a 6 month period. Any member who swims/walks in the big pool can use the daily log. The exception to this is that a member must swim/walk 500 yds. (20 lengths) for the lifeguard to be able to record it. Continuing to respond to the needs of women in the community, in 1978 the YWCA reached out to the needs of women and children in crisis by establishing the domestic violence program. At first, the domestic violence program served victims through a series of “safe houses.” In 1988 a house for the purpose of sheltering women and children was granted to the YMCA/YWCA by the City of Dubuque. The building is now the location for the shelter. MISSION The mission of the Dubuque Community YMCA/YWCA Victim Services Shelter is to empower and advocate for all victims of domestic violence, especially those seeking shelter services. We seek to create an educated community that supports and participates in securing a person's right to a life, free from violence. In July of 2013 the Iowa Attorney General restructured domestic violence services throughout the state. At that time, everything provided through the YMCA/YWCA ceased, receiving federal crime victim funding. The YMCA/YWCA Board of Directors recognized the danger and hardship for victims of Dubuque County who would have to seek safety at a shelter more than a 2-hour drive away and made the commitment to keep the shelter in operation.
